SOBI 2 - Sigsiu Online Business Index 2 is a directory component for the WCMS Mambo and Joomla! to show entries of companies, clubs, persons, shops, products, aso.
The entries are divided into categories, which can contain subcategories. One entry can be entered in several categories. The companies/clubs/persons enter themselves in the index. Registered users can modify or delete their entries. Entries can be renewed by the user if they expire.

Using the integrated Category & Entry Manager in the back-end, all categories and entries can be managed comfortably. Entries and categories can be deleted, unpublished and moved.

A Fields Manager can be used to configure each field entirely. This concerns the ordering, obligatory fields, fees, field length (width of field and number of characters), field type (textfield, textarea, checkbox, checkbox group, select list, text code or calendar), search methods, in which view a field should be shown (Category View and/or Details View), and much more. An unlimited number of new custom fields can be added.

For each entry two images can be uploaded (besides the linked images in the description). The images will be resized to a predefined size. With the URL field "image" it is possible to add fields for linked images.

An alpha index is available to show only entries starting with a specified letter. Also only the most popular entries and categories, the recently updated entries, the new entries or entries by tags (mata keywords) can be shown.

To let the customer pay for the not for free options easily, a connection to PayPal is integrated.

In a menu module all categories can be shown in tree view or all main categories in a flat view. An extended search function gives the possibility to search within the existing values of one or more fields or within a specific category.

SOBI 2 works with "Register Globals" and "Register Globals Emulation" off.
SOBI 2 is the big brother of SOBI and suitable for those users, which need the wide possibilities of configuration and subcategories.

Hi -
I just downloaded this Component, took a good look at its functionality, and immediately sent a donation to the developers (you should too). I recently did a big time search for a fully-featured, ecommerce ready link directory and bought one for our site. If I had known this was available, I would have used it instead. It actually has more features than the commercial program I bought (plus... it's integrated with JOOMLA -- what more can I ask for?). Great job guys. I will continue to make more donations to you as I use your support, and as you upgrade the product.

This is very powerful software. A directory s only the beginning, you can easilly create new user pages, and with some minor changes you can use this component to many different things. Only one thing would make this better, the ability to add:
1. The tabs plugin to the detailed listing profile
2. The ks rssfeed reader to the detailed listing profile, (business would be able to update their listing by just changing their homepage!.
3. Another thread said this, but the youtube plugin, but you can do it with html, so....

Anyway, a highly powerful tool, this is the best listing component.

This is one off the most professional components available for Joomla for FREE!

Very good and very stable, i tried it and it fullfilled 95% of my needs BUT i'm not using it because it has the lack of missing field types. Some crucial type like dropdownlist or radiobuttons are not present.

If you need a program like this please wait till this will be implemented and after this SOBI will be killer app!

great functionality that I had been looking for long. Works fine right away. Has got the right level of customisation.

The only problem is that it generates standard OPENSEF urls based on category and entry names but unfortunately, if those include spaces or accents, the SEF url looks terrible.

What I still miss is a googlemap where I can see all my entries plotted all together. Hope tis can be implemented in the future.

Using this program has been a pleasure.

SOBI2 has a well thought out feel to it, something you normally only find in very mature programs. Installing and configuring SOBI2 was a simple task – allowing me focus my energy on the more important things – my structure. Just about everything is intuitive to use. As I progressed and begin to think – hey can I do this? Well there it was, as an option choice in the settings. I still have a way to go, with this project, mostly extra fields and such. But its nice to know, that all the customizing work I need to do for this project is being built on a very solid foundation.

Though, I’m actually running it on a production site – I have to appreciate the fact that they are on RC5 – taking care and attention before they let it out of Beta. They also have an “active” support forum … just in case you need to ask a question – which you probably won’t.

Yes this is a great component! But I am many others have found that the module could be the best if it had the ability to refine the search to a particular category.

Works well otherwise.

Since the current version (RC 2.7.4) the search function can be limited to a particular category.

I must say, I had a bit of an issue getting Sobi2 to work. I must have loaded and reloaded this Extension 20 times before deciding it will do what I needed it to do. As often as I read up on the extension on sigsiu.net I could not figure it out. On the site I read of all the great feature it had to offer and this great configuration panel, but I could not find it. Last night I finally decided I would I would read their forum to see what the issue was. 2 minutes later I figured out the compatibility issue with the built it WYSIWYG editor. I small change and I had everything these people offered. Within half an hour I had everything set up to go and fully functional. The issue was not the extension but the extension user :).

This extension is exactly what I needed and more for my business directory.

Great job guys and keep up the great work.

P.S. I must say this is one of the better features I have added to my site.

We are using both sobi_1 and sobi_2 on our site, although I would rather use two sobi_2s! We are using sobi_2 as a place for designers to upload, display, and get user comments on their work. The other we are using as a yellowpage function. Really do appreciate your work on this guys and gals! As soon as we begin to get some numerical figures in the black, we hope to push a few coins your way!!

I could only see advantages in using SOBI.

-Active Forum Support. :)
-Easiest way to manage online business directory.
-Has a number of templates to choose from for different purposes.
-Most important of all, SOBI is "Always Updated!".

All in all, SOBI should be Editors Pick!

The component, last 2.5 and the new one both appear to install just fine. Once I make a link to the component it breaks my site. Tried it on a couple of sites, one was just blank and the other was stripped of almost all the content.

I see a lot of happy people, this is very strange. My installation of Joomla is up to date with all security fixes in place. I install dozens of components weekly on dozens of web sites. This is the only one that has given me problems.

I can't belive how fast joomla and sobi2 got me up and running with a website. I just needed a very quick and dirty method to store all my business cards to share with my friends, they always like me to refer who I use. Anyhow a big thank you and no hesitations to donate.

My community portal site for the Capital of the Canadian Arctic, www.iqaluitonline.com, depends on a few components. I purchased and built a couple, as well as use a few Open Source, but am always on the look-out for a better option. For a business directory I’ve been using a good Open Source tool, and was considering going with Mosets Tree (I use Hot Property).

A few days ago, I was browsing the Joomla! extensions site, seen SOBI for the first time, and decided I would check it out. All I can say is wow! I may need to customize a couple things, but as a free Open source component, I have to admit this is about the most functional and well-built as I have ever seen. If you are looking to create a free or paid business listing section for your Joomla! Site, you have to check this out.

The most flexible component I have seen. A dizzying array of config options.

I didn't need the Community Builder's functionality, just wanted a quick and dirty staff/user directory.

I'm using SOBI2 on Joomla 1.0.11 as a directory by giving the title as Last Name, First Name. Cool thing is, some users would want to be listed in the Users group and also appear in other directories.. like California users, Admin Staff, etc. Easy with SOBI2!

Every time I thought I might have run into a configuration issue, I found some mod I could do straight from the admin pages to make the changes I needed. Amazing. I'll definitely donate $ to this component.

My only wish would be for an import script to import my db of users into the directory. I'm doing it by hand with Excel and will load via myphpadmin into the tables --- though it is a little tricky. Have to populate 3 different tables.

Wow. I’m very impressed with the amount of thought put in to this extension. The configuration is simple and easy to follow. The layout works great and flows well. For sure one of the best extensions I’ve seen to date.
