NEW VERSION 1.3.1 - NOW WITH VIRTUEMART SUPPORT

RegistrationBlocker is a system mambot thaw allows you to prevent certain usernames from being registered.

For example, you might not want someone to register by the name "webmaster" or "admin" since it could give other users wrong ideas about their identity.

One way to accomplish this is to pre-register those usernames, thus effectively blocking them. But this is quite awkward, and not very elegant.

RegistrationBlocker makes it a lot more convenient to block one or more usernames. All you have to do is to enter the usernames in the mambot's backend, one on each line.

You can even use an asterisk as a wildcard for blocking a whole range of usernames. For example, if you enter admin* in the list, you will block usernames beginning with admin like admin, administrator, administration and so forth. With *admin* you will block all names containing admin, like siteadministrator etc.

Furthermore you can limit which email addresses that can be registered. For example, a company can set up a site where only its own employees can register by specifying *@mycompany.com.

If you rather want to block certain email addresses you can do this too. For example, you can deny registrations for email providers such as Hotmail or Yahoo by inserting these lines in the prevent field:

*@hotmail.com
*@yahoo.com

Finally you can deny access from certain IP's by using the appropriate text fields. Use a * for wildcards, like 212.* to specify IP's 212.x.x.x etc. Use the Allow only field if you want to limit access to certain IP's, or the Deny access field to block those IP's. You can choose to block all access (default) or only registrations.

The usernames and email addresses are case insensitive, so webmaster will catch WebMaster as well etc.

NOTE: RegistrationBlocker works with the standard login component, Community Builder and VirtueMart. If you use another registration component, it might not work.

nice work! by pfitzer, July 11, 2008
I use it with Joomla 1.0.15 and VM 1.1.1 and everything works fine.

Good work, keep on going with stuff like this!

Sorry to say: by sybil, January 19, 2008
It did not work at all on Joomla with Virtuemart 1.0.13. It installed in a second, and the configration was easy, BUT: No username was accepted! I had a bad word list, one on each line, ...

So, for one month, and I realized yesterday, nobody was able to register or login.

Something went wrong. I unpublished it. The Joomla worked again. Where is the support?

Not working with CB 1.1 and Joomla! 1.0.13 for me by powwowtime, December 5, 2007
I don't know what I am doing wrong, but this mambot is not blocking anything in tests or in real world use. I set it up according to the instructions given and could still purposely register usernames I placed on its ban list. I also placed email TLD's *.cn and *.ru on its ban list since that is where most spammers are registering their servers and emails these days, and still I get 2-3 spam registrations a week from those. I investigated possible conflict with various SEF programs I've tried -- by disabling and uninstalling them -- to no avail.

All of the positive reviews tell me this is a good system that works, but not for me. Perhaps there is something on my server that is not enabled. I just don't know.

Excellent Mambot by CubAfull, November 19, 2007
This should be incorporated in Joomla core.
Thank for your time and work Martin.

Excellent Mambot.

A really great mambot. by tomasin, November 7, 2007

I’m using RegistrationBlocker 1.3.1 on a Linux/MySQL4 server using Joomla 1.0.12 with CB 1.1 and Fireboard 1.0.3. It all Works as described and is simple to install and setup. My only issue presently is that it seems to interfere with using the CB 1.1 ajax username checker when turned on. The username checker’s “green” message works fine for when a username is available for registration, but the “red” message that indicates that the username is not available doesn’t. I have not been able to figure out what’s going on here but I hope that the next version works with this option, otherwise a must have mambot.

Works and tested on Virtuemart 1.0.12.
This should be incorporated as a standard tools on Joomla.

Thanks, Martin.

I'd Rate it Excellent If... by Schelly, April 26, 2007

...it worked with CB 1.0.2. I have the mambot configured according to instructions on a Joomla 1.0.12 site with CB 1.0.2 and JACLPlus 1.0.12. I tried to restrict *admin* as well as admin without the asterisks.

I can still register using admin as my username and/or as my realname. The approval process still takes place as always, no error message is returned. I installed RB after all else was up and configured, so nothing is installed on top of it.

I'd have written this in a support forum, but I can't seem to find one. It's too bad, too, because I feel this mambot is a must-have and was looking forward to using it.

On a positive note - the interface is excellent and the concept it superb. Hope that somebody updates it soon to work correctly on my setup.

Really really good!! by N!cklas, November 12, 2006
Tested it before release and it does exactly what it says - blocks usernames. A really good solution for everybody having a community where users can submit stuff or contact each other. A person registered as administrator could easily have a blast with quite a few other easily tricked users.

A standard plugin for future versions of Joomla?
