Integration with 1.5 by Goldmaverick, October 6, 2008

This is one of the best components out there and it does work with joomla 1.5.
You essentially have to contact the creators to get this properly working, @ least that was my experience. They have a services site that offers installation from everything from cb installation to other joomla sophisticated components.
But it works.
The version here is really lacking in much. Owner's reply: Support for 1.5 is still only available in the development branch, which is why I have not put the 1.5 tag on here. We are currently putting together the last fixes for the next stable release.
Its not necessary to contact us to get it working, but it might be a bit tricky.
And yes, we currently prepare for support of other (Joomla related) software.

File Permissions Problems by jakeman7, September 20, 2008

I have noticed that some people (incl. me) have a problem with the committing of the hacks, after installing the AEC component. there are several NOT-answered posts where people are asking how to get the file permissions right, in order to commit the hacks. So, if you download this component and have a Hostgator account (they are just great!!) you will have to get SSH enabled. Then you must set file permissions to joomla.php and that's where globalnerd.org should have an answer to it or at least a little tutorial, where they explain, how you can do this:
###################################################
joomla.php/mambo.php File Permissions
- The AEC has detected that your joomla.php is not owned by the webserver.
- Access your webserver via ssh and go to the directory \"/includes\". There, type in this command: \"chown wwwrun joomla.php\" (or \"chown wwwrun mambo.php\" in case you are using mambo).
###################################################
I guess many people (incl. me) just don't know where and how to type in either:
\"chown wwwrun mambo.php\"
or
chown wwwrun mambo.php
I just wanted to let you know about this, because there are a lot of videos telling you that you can install this (and a few more) components without hassle...
but the AEC component will just not work for you, without committing the AEC hacks.
Thanks,
jake Owner's reply: Thanks for the review. I'm not quite sure why you post the information AND say that its readily available within the component itself. I would suggest that people who know how to use ssh also understand that there are few quotes involved ;)
The upcoming stable release will work without hacks in 1.0 and 1.5.
And as for the unanswered threads in the globalnerd forums - the search function does help! This question has been answered many times over
But again - it seems like we have not made this information clear enough and I will work on it.

Hi, this is my first ever review for an extension, but there's a reason! I was really impressed with this extension, and its support. I was looking for an extension that allowed members to pay for their memberships, and this is the best one out there, because it does that, and so much more! When I had a question, the support got an email back to me in less than 24 hours, and it was understandable (For me, haha, I'm a noob). Love AEC, so thank you creators, its amazing!

I've long been an admirer of this component, but it seems to be losing it's appeal.
Having updated my core Joomla to 1.0.15, I realised I would have to check the compatibility with the various components installed. AEC being one of them.
Unfortunately, there is no "stable" release for the most update core Joomla, though the AEC team do have a RC release available for use.
To add to the misery, there seems to be an issue with Paypal IPN, and very little in the way of resolving this, perhaps that will arrive with the stable release? I have to say this is a shame, as Paypal is probably one of the most payment processors in use.
I have to add as well, that having read up on a thread on their forum, there are suggestions that AEC may not be compatible with some hosting providers, and I hardly think Joomla users are going to change hosting providers just for the sake of using AEC.
The AEC team would do well to fix the problems instead of further complexing the component. Owner's reply: I'm sorry that you have got that impression.
The stable release is very close and I'm currently working on resolving the last bugs. It seems that the PayPal IPN is one of them, at least for your configuration. There are quite a lot of users who have the latest releases in good use, especially with PayPal. So it seems more like we have to resolve an issue on your part.
That the AEC does not work with certain hosting providers is simply wrong. We just keep a list of providers with whom its easy to work and others where its a problem - in which case Joomla! itself sometimes is a problem. The only REAL issue that comes up with hosting providers is the file hacking, which is only required for Joomla 1.0 - for 1.5 we have plugins to do that.
And believe me, I spend a lot more time making the AEC work on different setups. The only real addition to complexity these days comes from paid work that I need to finance the development in the first place.

I have to thank Jake as he made it all work! I first installed on windows IIS and then moved to a Linux server. Jake helped with both sites and I couldn't have done it without him, the support is exceptional as they are aware of the other components that can impact on AEC.
I started with joomla on 4th April 2008 and used, joomla 1.5.2, acajoom pro, community builder, joomlaXplorer, Xmap, Fireboard and XCloner, so when it came to the subscriptions extension I had a good look around because I wanted it to work with everything else I had. AEC fitted the bill!
Now, thanks to Jake and the team at Globalnerd, I've completed my suite of applications. If you need payment integration, you must use AEC and with the full support package, as I now know how many hours can be spent working things out for yourself.
Great Result.

This component really stands out from the crowd. It's easy to install, it's easy to configure and best of all it actually looks the business straight out of the box. I had a couple of questions and I received immediate responses back from Jake who was really helpful.
This really is a pleasure to use. It's works fabulously and looks great. I will definitely be using this again for other sites.

I am an end-user, not a programmer, and paid for the installation level of membership. It is a bargain! Having someone else who is an expert at AEC deal with minor glitches is priceless and enables me to focus on my own work and what I do best.
The user interface is straightforward and *very* easy to use. It makes intuitive sense.
I highly recommend this extension (and the installation membership) for end-users who aren't programmers and don't want to waste valuable time trying to make an extension work.

This is by far the best and the most flexible and most developed extension out there for accepting subscriptions. You should get it and get a paid account because otherwise gems like this disappear or stop being developed.

Powerful product, great support by blewis, April 14, 2008

Because we are running a membership-based web site, AEC is sort of the defining component for our installation...we depend on it heavily. It can handle simple sites, but also quite complex situations (like ours) because of the flexibility and extendability which has been incorporated into it. We have had a number of special needs and the developer has been able to do custom add-ons for us (for extra $$ of course). AEC really covers all of the needs for a subscription site.

This is a great component for a restricted access site. It makes it easy to set up different levels of access including free and paid subcriptions.
The technical support is AWESOME! It installed great for me on joomla 1.5 in legacy. I had several issues that I could not handle by myself (joomla noobie) because my joomla was installed in a subdirectory. I paid for the AEC install and setup service that the AEC team offers and Bingo I was up and running. If you choose this component...it shouldn't be just because it's great...it should be because the technical support backs you up and the paid support is worthy of subcriptions or donations :)

This one of the best joomla component I've ever used, very brilliant idea and it's work and run lake a champ.
I also combine it (the MI function) with DOCMan to set the download amounts my customers can get according to the payment plan they choosed, and it worked like magic.
I also made a simple additional script on it so I can make several mi_docman to work on every docman catagories. (you can see it work on my vinnan.com website - still under construction)
Bravo
