This project boosts two multisites components developed in parallel. Both components makes it possible to run multiple sites using the same Joomla 1.0.x installation.

The "Original Version" patches a few Joomla source files and aims to provide multisite capabilities within subdirectories of your existing site. Distinguishes content and entities between sites by assigning them different database prefixes, easily administrated through the backend.

The "Alternative Version" enhances OpenSEF's (recently renamed to NuSEF) multisite feature and utilizes a non-patch-approach similar to the one of Joommsites (a now abandoned multisite project). Provides easy configuration of subsites residing on different domains than the original site (as well as in subdirectories). Uses one database prefix for all subsites and distinguishes content by invisible low-level database filters, allowing content-per-content filtering in addition to subsite-per-subsite filtering.

Does not work! by Dafydd, December 16, 2006

The only recommendation of this component I can make is: stay away from it. I tried installing it and tried creating a sub-site. Once I did that, my entire Joomla site was broken, both the original and the supposed "sub site". I don't know how or why, but restoring a previous MySQL database backup did not make a difference. All this component is good for is destroying your site.

Owner's reply:
Make sure you read the installation notes on the project page carefully. If anything breaks, you should be able to choose "Unpatch" and your ordinary should be back to normal. Because of the way Joomla 1.0.x is built, we had to patch some core files to make the component work. That is: Not only SQL data is altered!

I may have downloaded 100 or more extentions but this is the first I commented on. Not that the other writers don't deserve praise because they really do but this extension solved a major problem I had.

What I wanted to do was have multiple sites that broke up departments for a mortgage company with multiple services. But I wanted the complete site to have the same forum and I'm using VB-6 and BBpixel bridge. This caused a major problem because I couldn't set permissions on the other sites.

This extension allows for 1 login across many sites and I can set permissions for various links and content. I've spent tha last 3 weeks breaking up the 12 sites I had made and broke them all down to one site. Now I have to make the 12 sites again to use this extension. And I'm HAPPY about it because it gives me what I need and wan't.

This opens up a whole new world for joomla developement and it's free!!!!!!

This is great! It does exactly as advertised. I was able to install a component on the main site, re-synchronize the database, and have it available on the subsites. Documentation is available at http://forge.joomla.org/sf/go/projects.joomlamultisites/wiki
