Simple Image Gallery (in content items)
*** Native Joomla! 1.5 version now available! ***

Adding image galleries inside your Joomla! articles (content items) is now super-easy and simple, using the "Simple Image Gallery" Plugin for Joomla! 1.0.x & 1.5.x.

Just add for example {gallery}myphotos{/gallery} inside any article and all images existing in the folder "myphotos" will be "automagically" presented as an image gallery.

The gallery created features stylish shadows on each thumbnail and "lightbox" popups to display the original images, when the user clicks on a thumbnail! The thumbnails are generated on the fly using PHP, which means that the original images are resized and resampled, too!

Anxious to see the "Simple Image Gallery" Plugin in action? Then visit our exclusive demo site at:
http://demo.joomlaworks.gr

What are the advantages of using it?
a) You don't need to have an additional gallery component to display a few images,
b) you don't need to tell your visitors "to see our photos from Paris click here" and
c) you focus more on content writing and less on administering the images!

The plugin is ideal for news portals wanting to display some product images, for example, inside their articles. The potential of this plugin is actually only limited by your imagination!

You can have as many galleries as you want inside each content item, but for performance purposes try to only add one at a time (unless you're having only 2-3 images per gallery). If you want to create a gallery from subfolders inside images/stories/, simple add them like this: {gallery}folder/subfolder/othersubfolder{/gallery}. In other words, write the path to your target folder without any slashes at the beginning or the end of your path. Future releases will feature more control over the galleries created as well as different representations!

The "Simple Image Gallery" Plugin from JoomlaWorks utilizes "Slimbox" (developed by Christophe Beyls), which is a "Mootools" implentation of the famous "Lightbox" script. "Slimbox" generates the nice popups that display the original images in a gallery.

Full documentation is included in the plugin's parameters page.

If you want to show your support on our work, please rate and comment on the plugin, here, at Joomla! Extensions.

The "Simple Image Gallery" Plugin is released under the GNU/GPL license.

Have fun creating galleries inside your Joomla! content items!

***Version 1.2.1 Changelog (May 27th, 2008)***
*************************************************
Native Joomla! 1.5 version released.

*************************************************
***Version 1.2.1 Changelog (January 6th, 2007)***
*************************************************
Minor code fix for the lightbox-like popup window's slideshow mode.

***********************************************
***Version 1.2 Changelog (January 5th, 2007)***
***********************************************
Today we are releasing the much anticipated version 1.2 of the "Simple Image Gallery" Plugin for Joomla! 1.0.x. This new version features a "troubleshooting" section in the documentation, covering all possible issues that users might encounter, which usually relate to bad server setups or bad templates. In 1.2 we have:
- Fixed multiple galleries on same content item issue. This includes the slide show.
- Added the ability to select whether to display a nice message plus the filename or just the filename in the image popup window.
- Added the ability to select whether to display a navigation tip or not in the image popup window.
- Done some minor code and usability fixes.

************************************************
***Version 1.1 Changelog (December 8th, 2006)***
************************************************
We have updated the "Simple Image Gallery" Plugin, now in version 1.1, to reflect user feedback and requests. The changes are many and we hope you like this one even more.
In version 1.1 we have done the following:
- Some minor code changes.
- Thumbnails now stretch to fill entire available content width.
- Thumbnails align as if they existed in a table. Don't worry, we've kept the divs, no tables here!
- Fixed broken shadow frame for images whose height is bigger than their width.
- Fixed PNG thumbnail preview.
- Added slideshow mode to the popups. Now the user can browse through the images without the need to close one image to open the next. The user navigates through images by clicking the "next" and "previous" buttons appearing on top of the image (on the right and left hand sides of the image respectively).
- Removed the image "filename" from the preview popup window. Instead we added the option for you to insert a nice message like: "You are browsing images from the article...". Type this message in the parameters.
Enjoy!

Easy to use, looks great by bertm, December 6, 2006

This is a total snap to install, and use, and looks great.

Questions/Issues...
I get an error on each page that reads "Notice: Undefined offset: 15 in .../plugin_jw_sig.php on line 59." How can I make that go away?

I have image sizes and aspect ratios that are not uniform. Sometimes the thumbnail does not fit in the shadow box for which it is intended (additional white space shows up between the right edge of thumbnail and the shadow box). I get better results when I resixe the original image to an even multiple of the target thumbnail width. Is there a better solution?

If a thumbnail is shorter (vertically) than the one next to it, S.I.G. drops in another thumbnail below it in the same row. Great idea, but a problem can/does show up because this is a progessive feature. At the end of a row (on the right), the stack can grow up to 3-5 thumbnails high with TONS of white space left under the first thumbnails on the left.

Perhaps a solution would be to track the height of the tallest individual thumbnail in the row, and double up below short thumbnails only if there is room for it (without increasing the min row height required for the tallest individual thumbnail).

Great work. Wish I was a programmer so I could help out.

Great...Great...Great Plugin! by kalasoft, December 6, 2006
I don't believe the rating, 'Excellent' is high enough for this plugin. It installed into my version of Mambo (4.5.3h)with no problem, it came with more then enough instructions in the 'bot' to get me started and within moments after the install, I was adjusting the size and quality of the viewable thumbnails...OUTSTANDING! The use of this 'bot' is just about endless and I see many ways of incorporating it into my sports web site. Once again...THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
p.s. may I say 'Thank You' one more time...

Another quality plugin by mysterion, December 6, 2006
Your plugins and addons are really consistently usable and well put together and this is no different. I spent quite a while working with multithumb which while powerful frequently stopped working for strange server-side reasons. This gallery is smooth as butter and looks great but as with all really usable addons you soon begin to wish for a few features like ordering and Lightbox navigation as mentioned earlier.

I'd also like to remove the "jpg" reference in the title but unlike F.Filo can't negotiate the code! Very minor gripes then. Good work again. Many thanks

Undefined offset: 5 Error by sural98, December 6, 2006
The plug-in is very simple to use. Interface is very nice but I get the following error message on the pages where thumbnails appear:
Notice: Undefined offset: 5 in /mysite/mambots/content/plugin_jw_sig.php on line 59

Nice plugin, by F.Filo, December 6, 2006
Very nice plugin, easy to use with excellent layout results.
I suggest for next version:

- make "title" more friendly (not just the image file name)
(I've modified file plugin_jw_sig.php to do that)
- use selected images in content definition or specific folder (right now) like image files source

Bye

Owner's reply:
I can do the first one, but doing the second one too would completely loose the "Simple" in front of "Simple Image Gallery" name, wouldn't it?

Great Effect by locii, December 5, 2006

This is a very light on plugin and works well.

Just wondering how to get the images to wrap (just like in the demo) rather than have an image per line.

Cheers.

Owner's reply:
This is purely a template issue, actually!

The container in which your content displays should extend to its full available width. Try adding some more text to force "stretching" of your current container. Your images will now flow nicely, as in the demo site!

Very! good by eyezberg, December 5, 2006

This is so simple to use it's a real pleasure! Just set a folder, add the atg to content, and you're good to go.
I gave it a quick test: one thing to note is PNGs come out very bad looking from the process, better to avoid, jpg and gif are fine.
I'd suggest adding
1. the usual recommendation to publish the bot after install, and
2. the tags to use at the top of all the other text you see on edit screen!
well done, Greece 10 points ;)

We are honoured by your comments monsieur Eyezberg!

Another sweet gallery by rafa3x, December 5, 2006
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:
You guys at JoomlaWorks are creating quality stuff. This latest gallery comes seriously close to what I’m looking for. However, not everyone is a fan of the “lightbox.” For starters, it is cumbersome to click on and off again to see the next large image. Yes, I know this is a “simple” image gallery and it seems to be another well executed plug-in for the Joomla architecture. If there were a simple navigation within the “lightbox” to go to the next or previous large image, then it would be 9.0; if there was JavaScript alternative to viewing the large images in a resizable pop-up with simple next/ previous and slideshow/ stop slideshow control, then it would 9.5. A “perfect 10,” in my opinion, would be to add a function for registered users to create their own albums via the front end. Of course, this would no longer be a “simple image gallery” but I would pay money for it.

Owner's reply:
Thanks for your feedback rafa3x. We are already making 1.1 with all the changes you suggested and some more finetuning, too! Just a note though concerning your last request (10). You can already do that if you give access to your registered users to input content in your site. They simply upload images to a folder through the editor and then call the gallery throught our Simple Image Gallery tags! Right?

This simplicity was exactly what every gallery missed out.
Thanks, great mambot.

Tried it, worked first time. Just created the folder, put the pictures in. In my content i wrote {gallery}folder{/gallery} and it worked.

Thanks for the plugin.

I like the look of this by phil, December 5, 2006

I like the look of this...it looks very impressive and simple to manage.

I downloaded the plugin but could not find ant documentation on the site or in the zip file so am a little disappointed.

Owner's reply:
First of all, the documentation is included in the most reasonable place it could be! Inside the plugin's parameters page. Access this page by going to Mambots >> Site Mambots >> Simple Image Gallery Plugin. If you cannot access the "mambots area" and get a "restricted access..." message, it's not a plugin error, it's a Joomla bug. Solution for that can be found here:
