404 Auto-Redirect Handler for Artio JoomSEF
NO MORE 404! This small component is a 404 redirect handler for Artio JoomSEF. While Artio is an excellent SEF component, it is possible 404 / Page Not Found errors can arise for various reasons. This component automatically fixes and redirects those 404 / Page Not Found errors or gives a search results page. The user never sees the 404 page but is redirected to the correct content item. Other than a mambot call in the default 404 file (see below), no configuration is required. Anyone using Artio SEF can benefit by installing this component.

Features (in order of processing):

1) Automatically strips -2.html, -3.html, -5.php etc.. from erroneous URL and redirects to root URL.
2) Redirects erroneous section/category/2.html, .../345.php etc... URLs to default index
3) Determines and extracts title from URL then automatically searches and redirects to content item. Magic!
4) Automatic redirect to list of search results

The component keeps a running log of all 404 redirects and searches. The log is viewable and downloadable (as an excel spreadsheet) from the backend interface. It is a simple install component with one DB table (404 log). No core files are ever modified.

This extension correctly redirects 98% of the 404 errors on my site or gives a search results page for the remaining 2%.

This component requires the plugin RD AddPHP to allow PHP code to be added to Artio SEFs default 404 page. RD AddPHP is available from this extensions site or here ( http://www.run-digital.com/download/mambots.html )

After installing, be sure to add the following plugin call to your default 404 page : {rdaddphp file=administrator/components/com_404_redirect/404_redirect.php}

You can use another extension too but you need to add a call to include 404_redirect.php in your default 404 file.

New Version 1.2 with improved title extraction from URL
New Version 1.3: When redirecting, returns "301 - Moved Permanently" header with option to return a 404 header (google webmaster tools validation friendly)

If this component helps you out, please send feedback!

Must have comp! Thanks Dave

Works with Jumi mambot by Option6, March 9, 2008
I had issues installing the required RD Add PHP plugin on Joomla 1.0.15. I tried "Jumi" (http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1023/Itemid,35/), another mambot that supports PHP includes, and this worked just fine.

Thanks for a great add-on! This is something Artio should consider as a core component to JoomSEF.

Does What It Says! by hyphenated, September 18, 2007
It's so nice to get a component that does exactly what it says it does! If you have JoomSEF you need this!

Excellent add-on to JoomSEF by djjaan, August 15, 2007

Please do not depend on AddPHP mambot by rsd, May 11, 2007

This is an excellent idea.

However, the fact that it relies on the AddPHP mambot is a HUGE security risk if you dont trust all Authors of your joomla site.

Please, dont rely on AddPHP in the next version.

Dupplicate Pages by chris2005, April 27, 2007

Doesn't this create lots of dupplicate pages this way? I mean serverall URL's are going to the same page with this 404 handler. That's not really SEO.

Pls advice.

Owner's reply:
Because the component works via a plugin in the 404 page. The page is only redirected if it's a 404. The component won't redirect any valid pages.

This is a super life saver! by deanloh, March 28, 2007

We have recently changed the structure of URL (we're using ARTIO JoomSEF) and because of that, we started to lose many referrals from search engines, people ended up with our 404 page all of the time. And thanks to this nifty component, we are not able to keep them on our site, instead of being pissed off by the page-not-found error.

Cool Component by phpdev, February 26, 2007

Once I just ran into my error log and noticed lots of 404's 1000's of them. Started worrying tried manually to edit urls to redirect them to original one's but failed to do so.
Google was the solution found this component and it really helped me lot.
I'm using it on 4 sites. :)

No more 404's You bet! by lcdude, January 23, 2007

Works as advertised! Easy to install. Does what it says. For me solved a huge problem. If you have a large site 404's can be hard to find. I ran an online site tool to find broken links with a result of ZERO. Yet on the site we're getting 10 or more a day. This plugin solves the problem for sure. Also it aquaints the users with "search" which some people are reluctant to use.

I contacted the author to ask a question about something unrelated to the plugin. I did not get 1 email but two very pleasant and very detailed responses.

This plugin and the author 5STARS!

When you setup a Joomla compnent you just wat it to do the job. This one does it! I'm using it on my website, and I've got rid of 404 page. Everithing is re-directed to your search page. Nice one.

A much needed component by webgobe, January 18, 2007

No SEF component for Joomla is perfect, as all we know. This one improves the situation dramatically, and help me a lot to maintain high PR's on a couple of sites I manage - and there are ones with 7000+ items, PR^ ratings too among these.
Thumbs up!

Looks like a very useful thing by Dead Moroz, January 12, 2007

Solves many problems with JoomSEF generated URLs. Handling the 404 page and trying to search for the words typed in the URL is a great idea - wonder why did not anyone do such thing before?

Can't say much about stability - have been using only for a short time yet.

This is a really useful component that redirects users back to content of your website without them even noticing they were lost. Installing is really easy and goes without problems. You can also use other plugins for including the code into the 404 page.
