Letterman Newsletter Component
A simple newsletter component with subscriber management and HTML/image embedding capabilities. Good for providing a simple newsletter feature on your site, without multiple Lists. YaNC subscribers can be imported (XML/CSV).

NOTE: As at 14/06/2007 a security release of the module has been made available. All users are advised to use mod_lettermansubscribe 1.2.5.

Small Usefull Friendly by addiakogiannis, April 16, 2008
All I could ever want from a component in this category.

Nice component but with 1 small problem by Autares, April 2, 2008
Well, first of, it's a very nice component, easy to install and functions good, the only thing that doesnt work and gives me loads of spam, is the fact that the activation e-mail makes an error in the activate url, it adds the domain name of my website twice,

Easy to install but hard to customize it and get it to work by siddharthrao, March 26, 2008

Letterman is a nice component. However, there appears to be no support or enough documentation on their web site. I had to tweak a lot to get it work on my site: http://www.photo-print-reviews.com

Apart from the customization for the front-end appearance; I had to modify some PHP code as well as the language library file; in order to get it work the way I needed. But once all that is done - it works perfect!

It's a great component for anyone who wants to have a simple newsletter subscribe feature on his or her web site. I have to check and see how it works when sending out a newsletter email to a big group, like 500 people or so.

If anyone is having difficulties getting this component work, I'm willing to give a helping hand. Let me know.

Thanks,
-Sid

fix for "No User you could select!" by joshharle, March 22, 2008
As stated by another reviewer, there is no support for this extension. This seems like as good a place as any to give a fix to Joomla users who receive the error "No User you could select!" when trying to assign users.

The problem (for me at least) was that my Joomla! created the database tables as collation: latin1_swedish_ci. When letterman tries to join one of its tables to a core joomla one, it gives:

#1267 - Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (latin1_general_ci,IMPLICIT) for operation '='

The fix is to go into your database using phpMyAdmin, and change the _letterman_* tables to the same collation as your joomla ones.

Hope that saves you trouble!

Works great, but project does seem dead. by datawebusa, February 14, 2008

Does everything I need it to do: allows subscribers to enter their name and e-mail online. They receive a subscription confirmation e-mail w/a link they must click to activate. I can then create and save multiple newsletters (whose content can contain the subscriber's name), and I send those I want to send. I can also choose to publish the newsletter to my site so people can see past newsletters.

However, code hasn't been updated in a while. Not sure if that means the code is perfect or if the developer has quit this project.

If Only Everything Was This Easy by phil8600, December 30, 2007

This is a great component, easy to use and works straight out of the box!

I look forward to version 2 which hopefully will be able to handle multiple lists which will make it a superb marketing tool.

Keep Up The Good Work Guys!!

Does what it does very well - Lack of features by rbiemans, November 8, 2007
I was looking for a solution that would allow me to set up a list of recipients, then a few mailing lists based on those recipients. Once that is in place, I want to create a text only mailing with a link to a Joomla article, so I can verify if the mailing has a decent response rate.

I tried Acajoom and wasn't able to work through the wizard set-up and the logic behind that component. It wouldn't allow me to send a test mailing and edit the mailing prior to sending it.

Letterman on the other hand lets me do this in only a few straightforward steps. Download was easy enough, although it wasn't quite clear if the fix is a full version, or if one needs to first use the installer, and then the fix. Setting it up (configuration) is very straightforward and doesn't need any explanation. Building a recipient list is also very easy. Finally, creating a mailing is as easy as making an article.

Within a few minutes, your first mailing is sent out.

However: you don't have any influence in whether or not you wish your mailing to carry the unsubscribe footer. You can't define a text only mailing, you always have an HTML mailing with a text only alternative. It lacks the long list of features and very nice GUI of Acajoom, but it does exactly what it says it does.

Elegant Simplicity by ewillison, October 25, 2007
Simple, elegant, easy to use, easy to setup and easy to maintain. I folded in all my existing website users into my new letterman subscriber list effortlessly. You can also embed images too. I love the front-end admin access to email functions, and did I say it’s just really easy to use! Now I’m communicating with my masses and not struggling with the architecture as I was with my last emailer. Cheers and kudos to the folks who put this workhorse together!

Great component by joombob, October 22, 2007
Excellent. Easy to install and intuitive to use. No bugs, either, that I could find. Well done.

Good Component...BUT by rgbivens, September 24, 2007

Letterman in my experience is way more stable than AcaJoom (the free version) or any other free newsletter component. But it has one major drawback...the project appears to be dead.

Expect to get no support. The forums on the developers website are overrun with spammers so you can hardly look through them to find answers.

If you don't need all the bells and whistles and don't mind the project being dead then it's still a great component. I use it one two sites that I run, one sending out to 450+ and the other is in the works but it will be up to 2000 within a year.

Marvelous and easy to use by snadowitz, September 14, 2007
Absolutely marvelous and easy to use. Would be the bees-knees if it had multiple mailing lists supported. Worked right out of the box for me.

excelent!!! by eddus, August 5, 2007
thi does what it saids, if someone needs something simple this is the best !!!

nice.... by Jackuzzie, July 19, 2007
Nice component, works direct, simple and without any knowledge. A kid can do it!

For me it miss some features like removing of the copyright note on the bottom. I have still the credits for the component on my site, but where I want, in the footer and not in the middle of the page. You can easy delete it from the sourcecode.

Missing a progress monitor during sending, can be handy by big mailinglists.

Missing the templates, have now each time to start from scratch. You can easy store the basic of the newsletter in document and just copy it into when needed.

It has no multiply lists, for me is that personal the big plus point of Letterman. I just handle one mailinglist on my site, why should I create then different lists. It makes it only more confusing for the visitors. If Letterman want to implent multiply lists, please make it as a option.

I do miss a kind of stats, especially I like to know how many readers of the mailinglist read it and come then back on the site to read it!

As I said, a simple easy component that does it work as required. For me personal, I only changed a few lines in the sourcecode. I don't want to have the title as I use graphic titles on my site. When I choose not to display any newsletters, it even don't show ' no results found ' anymore. Did removed the copyright line and make my own at the footer line... and added some CSS lines to the layout.

Great one! by bzsolt, July 14, 2007
Simple newsletter module. Well... not simple at all (after having seen how many lines of code :))
Does what it promises, does it well.
Didn't have any issues while install. Could costumise it by searching their forum.
