Joomla BibTeX
Joomla Bibtex Component 1.31 This bibliography component for Joomla lets you create and maintain a bibliographical database using the BibTex specification. A bibliography database can be generated from a BibTex file with just a few clicks, and a powerful set of display and editing tools will enable an academic community to maintain a collaborative set of bibliographies via user upload, editing and download. References not in the BibTex format can be added individually and integrated into the database through a simple form input. As the component uses Joomla core display code, the bibliographies display is seamlessly integrated into your site’s template style. Changelog 1.31 Fixed download all bibtex string to work for categories Fixed author ascending mysql problem

Great extension, a satisfied administrator! by emilykate78, February 11, 2008
Having learned content management 'on the job' I am not 100% super confident when installing new extensions. However, this one worked very quickly and easily and the results are very satisfying. The readme is clear and helpful and written in a really accessible way making it simple for any user to install the extension in the right way.
The end result is a very smart looking bibliography which saves the administrator heaps of time and effort, and ensures referencing is complete and well presented. I also love the weblink/pdf section at the end!
Great bit of work, many thanks

Excelent job ! by cdtkoenig, February 6, 2008
My laboratory manage bibliography using EndNote, so I can now export data from endnote using bibtext output style and import data in Joomla BibText :))
EndNote just need a little hack to add a bibtext key field after the first bracket, I use the endNote 'Label' field to populate that key that does not seem to be used in Joomla BibTex, it is probably in documents written using bibtext citations. Here is my hacked "generic template" for EndNote output style, you must add similar "Label" field in other templates (reports, thesis, etc. if necessary.

@misc{`Label`,
`Author = {`Author`},`
`Title = {`Title`},`
`Publisher = {`Publisher`},`
`Volume = {`Volume`},`
`Number = {`Number`},`
`Pages = {`Pages`},`
`Month = {`Date`},`
`Note = {`Notes`},`
`Abstract = {`Abstract`},`
`Keywords = {`Keywords`},`
`ISBN = {`ISBN/ISSN`},`
`URL = {`URL`},`
`Year = {`|Year|`} }`

Suddenly it worked by sybil, December 15, 2007
I like this extension and it integrates completely even with two sidebars. Many bibliographic categories are supported, and weblinks, too.

Integration with 'Popular' and 'Latest News'? by uamato, August 31, 2007
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:
Coupling BibTeX + BibTeX searchbot is fantastic! I am a researcher and I found then perfect to put my list of publications on the Web.
I was wondering whether there is a way to improve integration with other Joomla modules:
- to count the hits of each record and insert the corresponding rank inside the output of the 'Popular' module;
- to insert the new records in the output of the 'Latest News' modules;
- in general to make new records appearing in the Frontpage.
Thank you again for this excellent work

Good, but more features would be nice by Antimidas, August 5, 2007
I find myself constantly footnoting articles that I write and was looking for a database resource where I could list all of the books that I own and use as reference. This product fits the bill.

However, there are some features that could be tweaked to fit my needs. But then again, I am picky.

1. Style Guide - I generally use Turabian as my style guide for bibliographical information, but would be willing to switch to the Chicago Style Guide if that were the option used by the software. Apparently, the software uses neither. It would be nice to have something along those lines included.

2. Ability to modify field names. As I do not generally use papers as my sources, but rather encyclopedic volumes and individual reference books, I have a different scope of information that I would like to reference such as ISBN number and publisher city to properly format those references. I can re-task some of the fields that I do not have a need for to store this information, but it would be nice to easily rename the fields.

3. Ability to provide a thumbnail. I originally looked at this software and instead opted to use VirtueCart for my library because it provided me the ability to have a thumbnail of the material I was referencing. But VirtueCart does not provide the indexing capability and number of fields that a bibliographic component would. So I am in the process of switching back to Joomla BibTeX.

Overall, it is a great product and allows you to keep a readily accessible index. It is a good start and far better than anything I have the power to develop. I can't wait to see the product grow into my needs a bit more.

Great Component by jrfuda, June 15, 2007

This is a great component and provides a way to give folks credit for their content I reference and cite on my site. The only thing missing that would make this absolutely perfect is some sort of mambot that would let us add references directly to content (like the footnotes mentioned by other reviewers). This could be done via the backend, perhaps, with additional options added where content is edited... It would be cool to have a list of references after each content item, with a link to each's Joomla Bibtex entry

great tool with lots of potential by Purchas, April 12, 2007
I am buidling a website for a research project of which the (large) bibliography is a key feature. Joomla Bibtex is great for academics engaged with websites!

There seems to be a problem, however, with diacritic symbols (as in é ë ê è) when the reference is imported from a bibtex file. Or pehaps I couldn't figure it out yet?

Two recommendations: (1) It would be great if the reference details (after clicking the title) would show the entire reference (Place of publication and publisher included). Perhaps the developer could use the Chicago style or something else which is standardized.

(2) The column "journal" in the front-end displays the publisher. It would be great if users could add and delete the basic columns to be displayed in the front-end

In any case, thanks for the great tool!

Excellent component by mustafaelshani.info, April 9, 2007
Well done Mark for this great work this will be very useful for all academics out there. It has got a lot of potential. I would like to ask you is there anyway of trying to make this component work with outputs of applications such as EndNote or Reference Manager. So that all the information doesn't have to be rewritten when I'm publishing academic work

Well done m8

BibteX Rocks by lorenz, March 30, 2007
I'm running a site for an EU research project with lots of web illiterate users. Now they can all finally keep their publications lists up to date themselves. Will save my ass when reporting time comes...

Thanks you Mark for this excellent component and for your lightning fast "feature" fix.

Most welcome! by fernucht, February 13, 2007
I’m developing an academic page on Road Ecology, and one of the most important tasks is the bibliographic component. I think this is an excellent start, although I have some suggestions:

- Develop a link to paper’s abstract (which should be uploaded along with the bibliographic reference).

- Allow users to upload information (like in the original “Bibliography” component).

- Administrator should be able to edit all reference information (if it is already possible, sorry, I’m new in this web world).

I will strongly recommend this component and I hope you have time to introduce these and abhigujar’s suggestions. Thank you.

Owner's reply:
The new version 1.1b does allow you have a link for each document (it will also extract any link present in the bibtex string). I have implemented user upload in the next release which will be out soon. I will take on board your other suggestion for the next release too.

Great expectations. by tonio, February 13, 2007
It is a great idea!
I am looking forward for future development of this component.
Again excellent start.

Excellent Start!!! by abhigujar, February 8, 2007
Been looking for a quick solution to listing my references. The component is very easy to install and use, and simplistic (of course it's currently in alpha).

Things I'd like:

- Categories or seperation of lists so references can be assigned to specific areas.
- Ability to link to pdf, doc, etc. for quick access.
- Keyword or tag functionality.

Overall, this component just might be the the most valuable to a researcher (and Joomla!/Mambo user for over 3 years). All suggestions aside, the 'keep it simple stupid (KISS)' paradigm is one of wisdom.

Owner's reply:
Thanks for the suggestions. I already planned on including the first two ideas in a second release, and they have already been implemented. See the demo at my site. I hope to release the new version soon
