You or the writer of your site's content can't guess what a visitor would like to know more about. So, why not make it possible for your visitor to search Everything Everywhere...? Without any coding? With an extensible list of search engines? For each and every word or phrase on the screen? Sounds nice, huh? That is exactly what mod_ludo_highlight_search does. Just highlight a word or a phrase anywhere on your screen, click the search engine you want, and bingo! This module will ConSiderAbly extend the usefulness of your site.

Version 1.1 (Feb. 18) has the following improvements:
- an overzealous system of default values was restrained. This was a design bug in version 1.0, as reviewer Kaizen correctly pointed out.
- should it be required, the second part of a search engine url can be inserted.
- groups of search engines can be enabled / disabled.
- "A HREF" target values can be marked.

Feb. 22: A plugin/mambot version of this module has been made available: look for "Ludo_highlightsearchbot".

Pretty nice... would be even better as a bot. by panamaspace, February 20, 2007

I wonder if it would be too resource-intensive, but I would definitely like it to be in content, and not taking up a module position, specially when you have a a lot of possible searched.

Owner's reply:
Hi Panamaspace,

Thanks for your suggestion. I published a bot version of this module. Just look for Ludo_highlightsearchbot. Its functionality is roughly the same as this module, but it can now be added to the content. Hope you like it.

Neat and great idea, but missing two important features by kaizen, February 17, 2007

This is an excellent little module that simply works and works well. You install and publish the module, which has a long (might be too long for many users) list of possible search sources. You can highlight any piece of text that's not in a wrapper or iframe and click on any of the listed sources and you're taken to a results page for that highlighted word or phrase.

(The mystery to me is why the author didn't use it on his own site listed here since it would work well there.)

For this to work for me, I'd like to see two important features added:

- the ability to determine whether the default behavior for the links would be to use the same page or to open in another window (right now it takes you away from the site and that's not what I want users to do of course!)

- the ability to turn the visibility of the groups of links on or off; right now there are more groups than I would ever use. For example, if I want to save a little veritcal space and I don't want to provide searches for the "Catalogs" group, I really don't have a choice. Even if I delete all of the links and titles and then save, the module simply replaces them with the defaults again.

Unfortunately without those two features, I won't be likely to use this module, even on sites where I think it might be a great asset. But I will keep my eyes on this one, since it shows promise - and the basic idea of it is one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" things the minute you see it.

Nice job, and hope you add those features!

Hi Kaizen,

Thanks for your reply. As you may already have noticed, I have included your remarks in version 1.1: the default behaviour has been changed, the possibility to turn groups on or off is there, and you can indicate what type of "target=" link you want. Any other remarks are always welcome!
