First released in 2005 and with over 30,000 downloads, this is acomponent to integrate MediaWiki so your Mambo or Joomla site can offer the comprehensive wiki functionality of MediaWiki. Users can edit and create Wiki pages while admins can manage MediaWiki and create menus to present selected pages. There is also a separate bot that allows links to the wiki from regular content pages and a separate recent changes module that is able to present a combined list of wiki and cms content changes. We love MediaWiki and wanted to be able to prepare and present information using this powerful wiki tool but have it appear in the context of our web site. So we created a component wrapper around MediaWiki (currently version 1.5.8) and thought it might be useful to other Mamabo/Joomla! users. Although it it called MamboWiki (because it was created before Joomla was born) it supports Joomla and has as many Joomla as Mambo users. Supporting modules include: Mambot/plugin so content can include links to Wiki articles Search mambot/plugin includes Wiki content in search results Latest changes module shows both joomla and Wiki changes Goto page module allows a user to navigate directly to a Wiki page by name Online demos and download from the site. The site uses the Wiki component to display content and illustrates how the supporting modules can be used. By the way, why not leave comments on our web site. We're more likely to see them and respond. The MamboWiki pages are in the wiki so you can add your thoughts directly using the wiki and we get to see them right away.

OK but there are better by cliftonarms, July 23, 2008
This is OK if you don't mind iFrames but remember this -> if your live from search engine referrals to your content an iFrame content component is a backwards step. This is because the iframe is referred to as its own page and looses all joomla based menus when directed from a search engine, so people arrive at an anonymous page. My advice .... use pmwiki which is a stand alone wiki and took us 1 hr to install and fully configure it on www.betgizmo.com in its own directory one level above the joomla root.

How to install - step by step by dkartuzinski, June 18, 2008
Ok. I haven't used the Joomlawiki but everyone says once it's installed it's great and so far it seems that way. Before I forget I wanted to explain how to get it installed on your system if you are using a shared hosting solution.
The problem is that the file is too big for the default php.ini allowance. So it times out. There are instructions but they were too vague and several others had the same problem as me - so here you go.
1. Download the component onto your hard drive.
2. Unzip the file completely.
3. Using filezilla or other FTP solution upload all the files from the unzipping - one folder away from your htdocs/[folder]. For example, name it tempinstall/ or whatever you want.
4. Go to your Help --> System info tab in your Joomla backend
5. Click n Configuration file.
6. Copy (to paste) the entire $log_path except for the "logs" file at the end
7. Now go to install components under Extensions --> install/uninstall
8. Paste the path in the "Install from Directory" field
9. At the end add your tempinstall folder or whatever name you put. NOTHING ELSE. You do not need to reference any other particular file.
10. Hit install and VIOLA! it's installed.
-
Now you need to go to Components --> Joomlawiki --> Setup to set it up.
- Good luck.

Disappointingly Dated by Sacr1fyce, April 10, 2008

I installed JoomlaWiki (the Joomla 1.5 version of MamboWiki). It installed quickly, easily, and without problems. Unfortunately it has been a bit of a struggle since then.

I wanted to customize MediaWiki a fair bit, so I started to read through some documentation on the official MediaWiki site. I became frustrated when the documentation wasn’t always matching up to what I was seeing in my installation. The fact that much of the customization is at code level also didn't help the situation.

Anyway, I came to discover that JoomlaWiki is using a version of MediaWiki that is over 2 years old (about 9 versions old). With this being a customized version of MediaWiki, I can understand it being a version or two behind. The fact that it is that 9 versions old is disappointing.

Never-the-less, I still give it a rating of "Good". I realize this is a free project and I appreciate the effort. I just hope that it gets an update in the near future.

Owner's reply:
We're working on a new version which includes 1.12.0 and have it out for test at the moment. As we observe on the web site, our challenge is that the MediaWiki team release every 3-4 weeks. Meeting your requirement of being "a version or two behind" means releasing a version 6-8 weeks. Given the time to create and test a JoomlaWiki version we'd be working on it constantly. However, we're going to give it a go though will be making a charge for this up-to-date version.

Excellent Product, Excellent Support by mjoneill, April 10, 2008
First off, the ability JoomlaWiki provides to integrate MediaWiki into a Joomla site is fantastic. What really impressed me, however, was the support for JoomlaWiki. I had the misfortune of experiencing one of the rare cases where MediaWiki doesn't want to complete setup on certain configurations of Windoows/IIS. I contacted support for JoomlaWiki and within a day had an ongoing discussion with their support team regarding possible causes and solutions. The very next day we had everything up and running (it would have been faster, but I had other work to attend to). Their commitment to supporting JoomlaWiki appears to be top notch, especially considering that in providing such support, they often have to deal with supporting MediaWiki and multiple possible configurations of operating system, web server, PHP, and MySQL as well. Well done guys!

Owner's reply:
Michael, thanks for submitting the post. It *is* a challenge that there are so many OS/PHP/MySQL configuration configurations - especially on shared hosting platforms.

J! 1.5 legacy mode in a minute ! by elfanjo, March 16, 2008
On Bill's recommendation I installed JoomlaWiki (which is MamboWiki for J!1.5) and it was up and running in less than a minute.
I had no problem whatsoever with this component and it does exactly what it is meant to do. Support was fast and helpfull too.
I therefore give a well deserved 5/5 to JoomlaWiki, well done guys!

LDAP and layout Problem by rchen, March 14, 2008
When the user doesn't login, the layout would be mess, after you login, the layout has no problem, I found there are bugs there, I have fixed it now. When I use LDAP with mamboWiki, if the user from LDAP server, mediawiki can not be used, but if the user is created by joomla, mediawiki works perfectly. Could anybody tell me how to use LDAP with MamboWiki?

Owner's reply:
In principle there should be no problem. Contact me and we'll see what can be done. If there is a trick to learn I can publish it as a recipe.

Great but when a 1.5 version ? by tahay, March 9, 2008
This extension is very good and I successfully use it within Joomla 1.0.15. The level of integration within Joomla is impressive.
The only problem is that it does not work with Joomla 1.5, even with Legacy component activated.

Owner's reply:
Support for Joomla 1.5 is on its way. If you want a copy to work with now, email joomlawiki@lyquidity.com.

It still require legacy mode because we can then have one code base for Joomla 1.0/1.5 and Mambo. However, it does install and work.

Working great so far! by Sreya, January 14, 2008

I've loaded this into my family website to use for a genealogy section. So far, it's working great! I haven't had any technical problems and things are really simple.

Only requests I'd have for future development is elimination of the iFrames system and the ability to have it blend into the current Joomla template without creating a separate skin. But for functionality, it's great.

Owner's reply:
Unfortunately we can't live without the frame. Both Joomla! and MediaWiki are sophisticated page generators which both have skinning mechanisms and need to control the response object (for controlling headers, compression, etc.)

When MediaWiki content is not in a frame, CSS and scripts clash. Sure, experienced users can sort these things out, but the component is intended to drop in option for user who don't have the experience or time and will suffer the use of a frame for the significant convenience ot brings

In need of a rebuild by Sadr, August 13, 2007
Someone should either continue this extension, or create a new one with the same purpose, but for Joomla! 1.5. This is a very useful mod with a great deal of potential. But in its current state it's just not something I'm willing to bother with, not to mention it's only compatible with the 1. version.

Owner's reply:
You don't need to do this. The MediaWiki included is already hacked (always has been) so that you can specify a target and enter a link like:

[http://www.mediawiki.org/ MediaWiki_BLANK]

or

[http://www.mediawiki.org/ MediaWiki_TOP]

See the "What MediaWiki files have been changed?" section of our MamboWiki page

Good start to be improved by Wernight, May 8, 2007

The principle and some functions are very nice but the iframe really block me.

To remove them you have to create a custom theme in MediaWiki that would only be the content (without the ... etc). Then this content has to be incorporated directly in Joomla! (I don't know how to do this part yet as I'm new to Joomla!). Last but not least, the title and other info have to be catched by some script to use them in .

Owner's reply:
The use of an IFrame has been a bone of contention since day one. It's not clear to me that there is a solution because Mambo/Joomla and MediaWiki fight over control of response stream resulting in an ugly mess. Even if this can be sorted out, they then fight over the CSS being used. Good luck to anyone who wants to give it a go (you won't be the first).

Not bad, but here are some suggestions... by r5gordini, February 18, 2007

After initial install, everything seems fine. Haven't yet tested with different user permissions (editing vs viewing with public and registered users)...

I would agree with other comments about the iFrame stuff. It would be much nicer if it were better integrated in Joomla - many other components have managed this!

With the Wiki being in an iFrame, it's slightly inconvenient to link to pages in the rest of my Joomla site. All links appear in the iFrame, rather than in _top. So, I wrote this quick hack:

1) Edit joomla_root/components/com_mambowiki/includes/Linker.php
2) Find function getExternalLinkAttributes
3) Add this:

if (preg_match('/some_url_part_unique_to_my_site/i', $link)) $r .= " target=\"_top\""; else $r .= " target=\"_blank\"";

Before the line:

$r .= " title=\"{$link}\"";

4) Change some_url_part_unique_to_my_site to something which is unique to your site - let's say you ran yahoo.com, you could set it as: '/yahoo/i'

This will make all links to your site appear in _top, and links to all other external sites in _blank (new window/tab).

Big Privacy Issue! by Azeem, February 14, 2007

Although the configuration page has an option to only allow registered users to view and edit... this can easily be bypassed! This is because the developer is using iframes.. if someone goes to:

http://sitename.com/components/com_mambowiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Not only can they access the wiki, they can also edit it! I was about to use this on a private site! Please fix this huge security hole.

Fairly good work, but needs improvement. by Dave_W, December 25, 2006

The skin that's supplied with this is good, and the addin that bridges this to the Joomla login is great. For a basic or small sized wiki, this is a great solution, and my thanks goes out to the developers.

However, this has some flaws, one of which is major:

1) This uses I-frames. Most professional web developers would avoid using any kind of frames where possible. In this case, it prevents users from linking to specific pages that they've browsed to: you can't copy/paste the URL into a link to link from say, your forums.

2) You can't set the content I-frame size to be dynamic compared to the content. When i was implementing it, i incorporated this feature in: setting the page height in pixels is not a desirable way to manage your layout.

3) The 'watermarks' on the top and bottom of the page are very annoying, and a way to universally remove them from our sites would be appreciated.

Although i sound grumpy, don't let me stop you from downloading this. I set it up in a matter of minutes and combined it with our current database without a hitch. It looks clean and sits well in Joomla.

To be honest though, I'll probably re-skin our wiki and use the login-bridge provided by this software, because our regular visitors like to link to pages.

Overall, great software, unless you're very, very, particular about the small things (like me).

Owner's reply:
Yes, you can go to the main page but not if it's a page for registered uers. Try it and you will be presented with a login. If it's not reserved for registered users then presumably its not a security issue in the first place.

And you've secured the files in the component folder right?

good component, poor text editor by integration, November 27, 2006
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:
very easy to install, but a bit hard to understand how to use at the beginning (when we don't know what is a Wiki). I really enjoy the Wiki idea, but find the text editor very poor. I wish be able to install a WYSIWYG Editors. For now, I have to memorise code to create table, row, cell and so on. I cannot ask user without a big IT Background to do the same for sure. So, the contributors are limited. If you know how to install a better WYSIWYG Editors for this WIKI let me know!
Thanks

Very Slick by egosystems, September 22, 2006
