yvComment is the first native Joomla! 1.5 Commenting solution, and it's free.
It has two required 'parts' (extensions): component + plugin, - and a lot of optional extensions (yvComment Module is optional also), so the resulted solution may be very simple or not - as You wish.
yvComment supports Captcha (secret word) extensions, Smileys, BBCodes, Avatars/Gravatars, WYSIWYG editor and many content plugins and tools, designed to work with Articles of Joomla! (e.g. Email Cloaking, GeSHi). yvComment allows users to add comments to Articles (and Comments to Comments also). Comments may be stored in the same table, as other content (and treated as special type of Articles), or in their own table.

What's new in v.1.18.0:
1. Added very flexible and context-sensitive "yvcomment" module, that uses the same MVC code of yvComment, as plugin and component. This module is preconfigured as 'Latest comments', but may be something more...
2. Language packs are rebult: now yvComment has single language file to avoid duplication.
What's new in v.1.17.0:
1. Added "Auto close comments after specified number of days" option. Setting this option disables addition of new comments to the old articles, but it doesn't prevent registered users from correcting or updating their outdated information in old entries.
2. Added "Show 'Please register'" option (after many questions about how to do this...). If set to 'yes', yvComment shows message 'Please register or login to add your comments to this article' in article view, if addition of comments is allowed for this Article, but not allowed for this User.
3. Seven (!) new translations were added since previous release.

Very easy to get up and running by lcdweb, November 21, 2007

I just tried this after running into problems with some of the other commenting extensions for 1.5. Very easy to get up and running, and very simple to use. It doesn't overwhelm you with options, but that can be an advantage. The parameters aren't always intuitive, but once you figure them out, you realize the extension gives you more control than you first thought. Also, since it tracks comments in Joomla articles/categories/sections, you can use content modules to view latest comments, etc. Very nice feature.

Thank you, comments without legacy mode issues by bobbyg, November 20, 2007
|
I had legacy mode turned on so I could use some of the 1.0, 1.5 comment solutions that had been around for a while, like mxcomments and I had issues with some of the core Joomla functionality I wanted to use like feeds requiring the cache directory and mine always getting deleted by some automatic process, and the way that clickable article titles wouldn't work in legacy mode.
I tried your comments solution, native 1.5, and it is working fine. So you have solved several problems for my site without directly intending to do so, thank you.
I was a little nervous about going with a new component but reading the joomla development blog link you provided was very reassuring.
The only issue I have had so far is that the smiley's and bbc code plugins won't install, error says there isn't an xml file. Owner's reply: I have to update documentation of yvSmiley and yvBBCode plugins: to install that extensions, you have to extract nested zip file, e.g. 'yvBBCodePlugin1.01.004.zip' from packages with version-independent names (e.g. from 'yvBBCode.zip' file).

Not so good by baijianpeng, November 16, 2007

Someone applaud for this commenting component maybe because it is the first one, or the only one at present, commenting component for Joomla! 1.5. But it is not so good. The file and folders structures are similar in component and plugin, which make me very confused when trying to translate it.
The backend parameters are also weird, it ask me to add a Guest User account! I haven't seen such a requirement on any other commenting system.
Second, it is not easy for those who want to allow comments for All his sections. This component has no option for All Section, you must enter the section IDs manually.
I am not satisfied. Hope the author will improve it later. Owner's reply: This review shows, that yvComment is not so simple already, as it was 6 months ago :-)
It may be disappointed for somebody, but one have to read instructions on the Homepage to know how and why something is done...

Almost exactly what I am after for a news site for users to add comments.
* clean, simple and easy to use in the front section. the others i looked at were too much for what i needed
* admin section was slightly confusing at first
bugs
* captcha does not work even after installing captcha
* when entering in too many characters no error appears. only the same page with additional menu items
suggestions
* add an 'approve comment before display' option
* add bad words option to stop people posting swear words etc...

Hi
Thanks for the great piece of work. I installed it on my 1.5 site, and it works and displays very nicely right away. No need to tweak anything.
Only problem is that the captcha does not work. It works fine when I turn the fundtion off.
Thanks
Elizabeth

wrong choice in database buildup by swiftly, August 14, 2007

It looks ok, but I do not like the work around with using the content table and category/section fakes.
It would have been good if it just used it's own table.
Why? Cleaner database, easier to delete tables after removing the component. No hudge numbers of "articles" in your article manager, while they are actually not articles....
Disappointed....
(if the posts would have been in a separated table i would have used it) Owner's reply: Please, look another time: yvComment supports option to use its own table: its FIRST parameter is: "Use content table" :-)
Moreover, documentation on the Homepage clealy describes differences between "Using Content table" and not using it.
See you!

installation: ok
ease of use : ok
I found this extension really effective.
I tried other solutions for joomla 1.0 but they often doesn't work properly or have too many unseful functions to create template problems.
The strength of this plugin is its simplicity and functionality, what common users needs.
I looked at the site and a pagination function is wip. Would be perfect.
I hope this will become the "standard external" comment plugin for j!1.5, so I encourage you to continue developing.
Though it is a really 30 secs simple task to change .css, my only suggestion is to change that default blue-shock color cobination :) Owner's reply: What's about that 'blue-shock color combination': at last in February of 2008 it is not the only CSS 'theme', that yvComment has (and it is not default now) - two new CSS-e were added... but I left that 'blue-shock' (that you for the name!) CSS as an option, because some people appeared to like it :-)
