[Now also for Joomla 1.5!] sh404SEF rewrites Joomla URL to a more user-friendly format (SEF URL or URL rewriting): mysite.com/index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=69&id=34... becomes mysite.com/en/sh404SEF-and-url-rewriting/list-of-available-plugins.html). It is also a security component and manages title and meta tags : automatic tags, or manual for every page. It works with or without .htaccess file. Fully Joomfish compatible. Caching system for high speed and very small DB queries overhead. Support many components natively but uses also sef_ext from OpenSEF/SEF Advanced. VirtueMart, Fireboard, Community Builder, mosetsTree, HotProperty, Sobi2, Docman, myBlog, iJoomla Magazine,News Portal, Remository and more supported natively. SSL switch, automatic 301 redirection from non-sef to sef and from Joomla SEF to sh404SEF, insert Google news style numerical ID,.. Many backend parameters to control URL construction behavior.

Cannot work with virtuemart products that are listed in multiple categories!
Just did my first 2 virtuemart websites and wanted a SEF extension. sh404 worked well for 1 site, but not for the second.
On the second site, products are often in multiple categories. sh404SEF pulls the new URL from the database, but links to the first loaded category.
Example:
Product: Nokia cell phone
Categories: Cell Phones, Electronics
If the Electronics page is visited first, the URL for the product, no matter where it is linked from, will load the product page showing the category of Electronics. But, because 'Cell Phones' is the first category listed in the database, the URL will be
/cell-phones/nokia-cell-phone
and will load the page
Electronics > Nokia Cell Phone
On my product detail pages, I have the category image display, and it's not good to view a category ( "Cell Phones" in this example), then click on a "Cell Phones" product and be taken to a page in a different category ("Electronics") in this example.
So.. It still works, but now I have to create duplicate, triplicate or more listings for every product that is listed in multiple categories. Owner's reply: Hi,
WHat you are doing is generating duplicate content, and sh404SEF tries to avoid it with its default settings. Have you tried simply activating insertion of category id in URL ? THat should make your URL unique, so you'll have the category you like (but two or more URL leading to the same content)

Couldn't be happier! by Casen, October 31, 2007

I decided to use this component because I was having trouble with joomlaworks' in content tabs and slides module. The slides would not work with SEO friendly links turned on. I installed this component, activated SEO friendly links, and enabled the component in the configuration panel, and wahlah!
This component does everything it promises. You can even configure how you want it to re-write your URL's if you are unhappy with the stock configuration. Most importantly it comes up with URL's that make sense, and are easily digested by search engines, not to mention easy to remember.

Started this with sweat in my hands. First created a backup of my site, installed sh404SEF. Got 404's all over the place, aaah.
Super helpfull documentation solved my problem (the .htaccess file). Best extention ever! Why is this not included in the standard Joomla build?

A handy extension by ByeVas, October 31, 2007

It is a very useful extension, however it is not bug-free, but the support is really fast, and the people working on the project are quite responsible which in my opinion is extremely important for such projects! Thank u!

I've tried them all, and THIS IS IT by joomlord, October 19, 2007

I started with OpenSEF and after being abandoned, jumped to JoomSEF until the spam tags appeared. Then I used the Kangainternet JoomSEF mod until I found sh404SEF, which does everything the others do, and a lot more, see the supported components list. sh404SEF is faster (with caching!) and easy to use just like JoomSEF. Then I dabbled with SerrBizSEF. I'm back to sh404SEF now, and I can tell you that I won't be messing with any other SEF extensions for a long time. This one is by far the best. Thanks to the developers for an amazing product!

Someone Call the DR!!!! by BlackNinja, October 19, 2007

I could have fainted when I came across sh404SEF. I was shocked, nay, amazed at just how simple this extension was to not only install, but use. URLS are clean and easy to read now. The admin panel is easy to use, even for the most new of newbies. IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS ON THE BOX, and with no fiddling or tearing out of hair!!!
I am so so happy, I need a DR to calm me down and give me a 'I can't believe it's not butter' pill. So far, I can't see anything which could/would stand in the way of anyone using this extension and getting what they bargained for or adding that 'Googles gonna love me' feel to their Urls.
Thank you developers. For not making a big hoo ha about developing an extension for Joomla. I just love Joomla town!

What can I say ?
I'm impressed. After having tried 404Sef then OpenSEF, here is sh404SEF...
Efficient & excellent URLs, no more duplicate content (which is -was- the negative point of Joomla, in term of SEO !), usage, stable (for non-english website, don't forget to remove all specific characters like apostrophs).
Well.. Bravo. Ready to test the next version (x).

SEO/SEF That really works! by EFARMSTRONG, October 9, 2007

After many frustrated attempts to have a real SEF site using most of all of the available plug-in including the openSEF one I found the holy grail and no more search and test. This excellent extension does what it claims and no more. If you are a Joomla site developer the setup will take only around 5 minutes to get it up and running. We have a situation on witch one of our clients site after converting it to Joomla their Google site ranking when from 1st page back to a 3rd page and of course our client was not to happy at all. But after the install and adding the Google xml map and Yahoo txt using a third party software for this task the site when back to 1st rank in the 1st page in less than 24hrs.
Guys keep the good work going! Congratulations for a fine extension!

Yes yes yes!
Finally after 1 year!! of trying to get it to work with IIS, this version does it right, I use several components: Fireboard, Virtuamart, Missus and some more and everything works right out of the box.
I am a very happy man now, thank you people of siliana.net.

Tried ArtioSEF but ran into some problems using the .htaccess file. This component works like a charm and takes only a few minutes to install and configure without having to use .htaccess!
Thumbs up to the development team! Well Done!

Excellent SEF Component by rdsherwood, October 1, 2007

sh404SEF works beautifully. I installed it, and it worked the first time, without any changes to the configuration. I was having trouble assiging a custom SEF URL, and Yannick volunteered to go into my Joomla backend to help resolve the problem (which was just user error). You don't find customer assistance like that very often. Yannick is actively working to improve the product, so I anticipate that it will only get better with time. Highly recommended!

You guys did a great job with this component, it works exactly as advertised. Finally, an SEF component that works out of the box, and without having to use/configure .htaccess!
AWESOME!
