[Now also for Joomla 1.5!] sh404SEF rewrites Joomla URL to a more user-friendly format (SEF URL or URL rewriting): mysite.com/index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=69&id=34... becomes mysite.com/en/sh404SEF-and-url-rewriting/list-of-available-plugins.html). It is also a security component and manages title and meta tags : automatic tags, or manual for every page. It works with or without .htaccess file. Fully Joomfish compatible. Caching system for high speed and very small DB queries overhead. Support many components natively but uses also sef_ext from OpenSEF/SEF Advanced. VirtueMart, Fireboard, Community Builder, mosetsTree, HotProperty, Sobi2, Docman, myBlog, iJoomla Magazine,News Portal, Remository and more supported natively. SSL switch, automatic 301 redirection from non-sef to sef and from Joomla SEF to sh404SEF, insert Google news style numerical ID,.. Many backend parameters to control URL construction behavior.

Just what I wanted! by greencar, August 23, 2007

When I printed out the documentation and it ran to twelve pages, I was thinking this would be a bear to install. Happily, the install went fast. There is a way to not even bother with the .htaccess file, but I am using one.
I appreciate the clear documentation. And, you don't need all those pages, but if you are a techie, (which I am no longer) you will appreciate all the changes made over time.
All I needed was to uncomment items and comment others in the .htaccess file. How to comment and uncomment is explained in the original .htaccess file. Thanks to Joomla! This was all that was needed in my configuration. Even though it's still a beta release, it works just fine.
Thank you.

The installation was smooth as glass. I needed to edit the .htaccess to uncomment the section which was described in the install notes. Without even touching the default settings all of the urls in the site changed over to beautiful title copy. The html extension is a nice touch.

So easy, and it works! by Mediaman, August 21, 2007

Here is how easy it is:
1. Download sh404sef
2. Install as Component
3. Read Instructions
4. Open File Manager > htaccess
5. Uncomment 4 lines
6. Comment four other lines
7. Finished!
Note: A comment is the # sign
The entire process of installing sh404sef and having it function beautifully, took less than 5 minutes.
I am not a Joomla expert. In fact, my knowledge is just three steps above newbie. I use Hostgator shared servers, and did not have to configure anything.
To borrow a line from the commercial - "This is so easy, a caveman can do it".
The outputted urls are nice. There are no glitches or site slowdowns.
I highly recommend sh404SEF

I've been through all the SEO implementations. sh404SEF is bar far the easiest of them all. There were issues with ArtioSEF, (bizarre 404 pages redirects that forced me to install yet another package to fix the issue), OpenSEF, (whilst fantastic it's starting to get too bloaty and beyond a simple SEO), and others, (the commercial ones aren't as good).
sh404SEF - It has a very similar feel to ArtioSEF, but just installed and had it all up and running in a couple of minutes. It just worked. I will definitely support the developer with a contribution.

I've had my eye on sh404SEF for sometime now having published amy previous 5 sites with OpenSEF. I'd been considering the switch but resisted until until the Beta Q... From the getgo its been a very smooth and painless switch and one that i'm very pleased to have made. The new sites run consistently well with only a few extensions giving some minor problems (under beta S) but i've skipped them.
If you have a site (like i do) with extensions that simply won't run with the native joomla SEF enabled and since there's no way to selectively switch off SEF for extensions in joomla 1.1.x then sh404 can be a perfect fit for you also...

Very goood component except for the management of components not supported.
For example:
component/option,com_google_maps/Itemid,375/
component/option,com_playgames/Itemid,385/
Next relases will allow me to modify this URL???
Sorry for myfantastic english ;) Owner's reply: Hello Gianmarco,
You can customize manually any URL you want, including those for non natively supported components (and also set Title and Meta tags). Please post on support forum at http://extensions.siliana.net to get some assistance

Excellent Component The Best SEF URL Component Available by gav240z, August 11, 2007

As someone who works in search engine marketing and understand alot about SEO and SEM this is a god send. I was previously using OpenSEF and while the author of that program deserves credit for his hard work. This component absolutely blows OpenSEF out of the water.
First of all proper 404 errors are a huge improvement. If you are running an Adsense campaign proper 404's are essential to not sending users to the wrong page and wasting your money. It is also important that google receives a 404 so it knows not to index pages and cause duplication issues.
The ability to input h1 tags and replace titles and meta data is just a bonus. I bought JoomlaAtWork SEFAdvance for this and yet this is FREE! The h1 tags will save me alot of time and the ability to not use .htaccess is fantastic although I will use it to make url's that bit cleaner.
I haven't tried importing my old OpenSEF url's yet it might be a good idea but so far so good. I love it, once I have set up my site on it's new server i'll be moving this from my test server to live.
Thanks for such a great plugin and when I get a few dollars together expect a donation. Projects like this need to continue and infact should become part of Joomla in my opinion.
I havnen't used ijoomla on a live site yet but I do hope to. Support from this product is great. I only hope with current GPL issues that Joomla and iJoomla continue.

OpenSef for me was the best available option. I found it really easy to use but it lacks when it comes to working with CMB or some other components.
Then I decided to work with this one, the plugin for CMB makes it a real winner, as well as the constant updates and support. Really love the component.
One CONS though, the backend interface...it's a bit ugly and confusing. They should borrow the layout from OpenSEF. Other than that, excellent!!! I think that'd make it PERFECT
Thanks to the programmers! Excellent Job

I tried OpenSEF & Artio JoomSEF prior to this one. This one actually works. Try this one first and save yourself some hassle. Although the UI looks strikingly similar to Artio, it doesn't come with the adware. That's right - the free version of Artio buries advertisements for itself in your meta tags. If you're not into that, there is a hacked version by some Kangaroo company on here you can try. I had the same problem with those - it didn't consistently fix URLS. On the same page I'd have /article/birdfeed.html and for the readmore link it would re-write it to /article/birdfeed_2.html What's up with that? Try this module to avoid issues.

This is the cream of the crop for SEF components. After battling with outdated, obsolete and unsupported components (OpenSEF), those that sneakily add ads (Artio) and others that just don't work, this component is a revelation.
Does everything required, and just works! Especially valuable if you are running VirtueMart which other components couldn't cope with. Rewrites to sensible URLs with no magic numbers, content ids etc.
Excellent work!
