This module is in its early stages however I saw a number of people request something similar on the boards. It displays the most read articles in the section or category you are viewing. If you are on the index page it will behave normally. If you got to a section or category it will filter out the rest. It has several setting. 1) You set it to work on just sections or let it work with categories too. 2) You can choose normal Joomla! links or alpha content links.
