In the website I've been creating (for the past year) I've needed a "Library" of member contributed content that helps a virtual worlds members to understand the things that can be done while in the virtual world. My first attempt was to use MamboWiki and, well.., that system is maddening. Also I was concerned about members abusing the wiki format.
After ditching the wiki idea I went digging through the myriad extensions within our Joomla community and eventually found AlphaContent. Sweet!! I setup all the different Joomla Sections and Categories that will be needed to properly create my Library. Of course I will need to have members request author status to be able to create content that will need approval, but that's exactly what I wanted.
Bottom line: AlphaContent is very intelligent, works smoothly, has the bells & whistles that are so important in a community website and even plays nice with Community builder. Installation was a snap and the backend setup is intelligent and powerful.
Now if I could just get the creators to make the definitive Joomla gallery component...

| Surprised there aren't more of these components by petersen, March 11, 2008 |

I was looking for an alpha-type listing of content items. I considered writing one but saw this and it does what's required. It has some useful layout options (2 column etc.) and does what is required. It needs a little bit of polishing on the administration area (dropdowns rather than listing section/category ids would be nice) and it's not currently Joomla 1.5 native and there's nothing planned at the moment. Some of the front end code could do with styling up properly rather than using inline styles but that's a small thing to fix.

| Good Component! Change date to show new items by RECS, February 24, 2008 |
|
I worked for several hours trying to get new articles to show up. The next day they showed up with no changes? After reading the review below I discovered that if you change the date on your computer or the creation date on the article to make the items a day old they show up. This was tested on local machine so I guess the same is true on an active server. Why???

| Excellent component, but poor support by obsessio, December 31, 2007 |
|
Yes it's free and it's very useful component.
I'm using old version of Alpha Content in my 3 sites.
It's a simple way to show all articles on your site.
Easy install and easy configuration.
But;
When I write something to support forum or e-mail to developer I never get answers.

This app is so feature-rich I use it as my home page to display news -- which is to say, a deployment the guy who wrote it, probably didn't have in mind.
And I've tried all the other news modules and so know what's out there.
The genius is how it displays content. It does everything the news content module does, then a lot more -- it lists your content several different ways.
I've been watching the big network news sites and most seem to be moving towards listing their articles by titles with thumbnails and "readmores" that expand into the full article when clicked. This packs more content on a front page while not slowing it down.
Alphacontent not only allows you to do this, but it gives you really cool features to do it well. For example, it has an "alternating image" feature that alternate article thumbnails from left to right. This certainly wasn't necessary, but what a wonderful feature.
Then there's the feature only a few other news modules do -- it shrinks your photo into a thumbnail presevering aspect ratio -- and that's not all! Since it only pulls the thumbnails from mosimage, you can place the mosimage at the bottom of your article, while inserting your main full page image at the beginning of the article which Alpha will ignore. Presto! a great thumbnail on the front page and a full size article in the full view.
As I see it, this is far more than a simple directory -- it's a powerhouse content management tool.
Here's hoping it's developed more along those lines.

| Great! however... by Kuber, September 5, 2007 |

Great Component.
However I have some issues. I am not sure if it is a component problem.
AlphaContent does not hide the introtext when displaying the full content.
Multithumb does not work properly with Alphacontent. It does work but much of the functionality is lost.
I still use it. I working ways around this issues. I wait for future releases hoping this will become even better.

| I Love This Component by bubbleplanner, August 22, 2007 |

I spent hours trying to display the articles the way we wanted them on our website. Finally, I checked out the Joomla forum and found a comment about AlphaContent. This was exactly what I wanted. In addition to displaying the articles in a pleasing way, the backend gives you great flexibility over the content to be displayed.
Hands down - one of the best components that I've tried.

| Pretty good extension ( bug noted in this review with fix ) by dhthwy, July 4, 2007 |

1 of 1 people find this review helpful:
Since I can't access alphacontents author's forum at this time I decided to go ahead and write a small review and note a problem I had with it so that others with the same problem might have a chance to fix it.
First off, this software seems to be a very good alternative to the commercial mosetstree extension with an impressive set of features and a wide range of configuration options. One thing that would be nice for some of these extensions is a readme or install file with instructions on how to use it. Since I am new to Joomla and components I couldn't readily figure out how to get the directory to show on my site after I installed it. I had to scour the forums and found there that you need to link a menu item to the component. As soon as I got that figured out it was a breeze.
I had only one major problem with it so far, and that was that alphacontent was not showing my items under the category/section's. I went to there forum and saw that someone else was having the same problem. The problem turned out to be that alphacontent relies on Joomla!'s version information provided in version.php. By taking out Joomla! in that file you will break alphacontent. To fix it you need to either use the original version.php file or edit alphacontent.php and alphacontent.html.php.
To fix it:
Find all the instances of these lines in each file:
if ( $_VERSION->PRODUCT == 'Joomla!' ){
$nullDate = $database->getNullDate();
$now = _CURRENT_SERVER_TIME;
}elseif( $_VERSION->PRODUCT == 'Mambo' ){
$nullDate = "0000-00-00 00:00:00";
$now = date( 'Y-m-d H:i:s', time()+$mosConfig_offset*60*60 );
}
and add this below it
$nullDate = $database->getNullDate();
$now = _CURRENT_SERVER_TIME;
Now you might ask. Why mess with version.php anyway?
Some site owners do not want their visitors knowing what software their website is running for many reasons, including security reasons.
and It seems that Joomla! does not have the option to remove the Joomla! notice at the footer of the site on the admin panel, and It is much easier to edit the version.php instead of going thru every php file that uses it and commenting it out.

This tool by Bernard Gilly is really exceptional. Something like this should be made a core functionality to Joomla. Stability and Versatility are great so I highly recommend to try this at home!

| Just what I was Looking for by NetGoonie, May 15, 2007 |
|
I have to say, this component is just what I was looking for when designing a site for a client. I am using this for something other than simply displaying content as a directory and it's something that is quite flexible actually. To be honest, I would like to see a commercial level version of this to be used as an actual site directory that could compete against others like mosets. I see here it has the modules icon in the extentions at joomla, but I didn't see any when I installed the component...did I miss something here? I will have to look again. The component does have a copyright line that shows up in the page and know many will want that removed. However, I think what VisualClinic should do is offer a couple options:
(1) Free version with copyright there
(2) Paid version without (not by optional donation either)
I'd still like to see a commercial level directory be made by VisualClinic with more features. I'd definitely purchase it.
