Jombackup, for performing daily mysql backups and emailing them to the address of your choice.
The default settings should be enough to get you up and running, but there are plenty of configuration options available to you, including modifying the text of the email sent to you, changing the default email address and the actual type of mysql data backed up. Literally you should be able to fire and forget.
This mambot is designed to allow those people who do not have access to, or are unwilling to use, Cron, to enable daily backups of their Joomla mysql data. It runs every time Joomla is run. Most of the time, all it will do is check for the existance of a checkfile with today's date. If the file exists it will not do anything else, however if the file doesn't exist (IE the local server's time has passed the midnight hour and this is the first time today the site has been visited) then the plugin will perform a backup of the system's mysql data and email it to either the system default email address, or another that you may have specified in the config.
Very important: Pay attention to the Notes regarding the Testing option. I kid you not when I say that you could bring a server down if you abuse this.
Installation: Administrator->Installers->Mambots. Upload and install the plugin, make sure you visit Mambots->site mambots and click on the link to JomBackup system plugin to edit & publish it.
How long does it take to perform a backup?
The answer as always, is "How long is a piece of string?"
I can only tell you how long it takes to perform a backup on jomres.net. The backup file, uncompressed is appx 33mb, compressed it's about 2mb. It takes jomres.net roughly 20 seconds to perform the backup and email it away.
Please note that this script needs write access to the media directory by default. If you are using safe-mode then you may find that you receive empty emails or that backups are simply not happening.

Great simple bot by usacascl, April 18, 2007

Excellent simple bot. I used this bot on my live site to perform daily MySQL backup that send to my email address. Now I don't have to backup my database manually again which was a great pain :). Thanks for sharing this. Keep up the good work.

Nice aproach to automate the daily backup.
But every day, the first user of the site has to wait depending of the size of your db(!) and gets an empty page after this! Or am I going wrong? Why not posting "server busy, try again" to get this work around?
Every single visitor is a welcome visitor, even a searchbot.
regards Emanuel

Very good backup plugin, but there is a problem with Greek characters by yiannis_gr, February 3, 2007
|
This plugin is very good and easy to install and use, but I have a problem with the Greek characters stored in database tables.
My website is multilingual, with English and Greek content.
When I take a backup with phpmyadmin everything is ok.
When I receive the backup in my email from jombackup, all the Greek characters appear as “?????? ????? ?????”. All my tables have these settings: ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_unicode_ci;
Do you know how to solve this issue?

I use this tool for all (3) my Joomla sites, and it works very smooth! :) Dont' have to look at it after install and activation. Just check your mail and there is your mySQL backup :)
I use it in combination with "Handy backup 5". With this tool you can backup all your files from your FTP to your harddisk.
Note; if you don't receive the SQL backups in your mailbox, check your spamfolder! It happened me once.
Jombackup: great tool, I love it!

Great solution - it will be on EVERY install I do! by richm, November 22, 2006

This should be a core feature of Joomla. With this program, I can do manual FTP full-site backups occassionally, after major changes, and SQL backups daily. I even installed this on a site where I purchased another backup solution, so now I can do full 500MB backups weekly, but do the SQL file daily.

Tried several other tool before, nothing of them are so easy like this one. Took me about 1 minute to install and configuration is quiet easy. Backup was made and sent by e-mail in a few seconds (very fast) and is about 600k compressed.
Great Job! Thanks to the coder!

Great but small question by Chinaman, September 17, 2006

Must say, quite impressed, as not only does it work well, but logic tells me it will be doing the backup in the wee hours of the morning as the check of dates will mean the first visit for the day will trigger the bot.
Now my question - can it be made to be selective, for those times where you have more than one site using the db (using different db prefixes). The reason for asking is that I have an instance where there are 2 sites sharing the same db, along with extra data in the db, and both sites` backups contain the whole of the db`s data, including the extra data for non-joomla scripts. Not a big deal, but just a thought.
A huge thank you for this great tool, which I feel should be highlighted in the Security forums at J! Forums.

So EASY and quick to install -- works great! by donmarvin, August 1, 2006

At first I didn't want to try this because of the warning about bringing down the server. But then I saw that it was only when using the test mode.
It took all of two minutes to install and set up. I'm very happy to have found it, and grateful to the developer. Thank you!

This was exactly what I was looking for to ensure my site was backed up safely. Installation was very simple and I found I could even get the backup sent to 2 different e-mail address for extra safety. (Ok I got 2 copies at each address when i tried it but that may well have been me doing something wrong.)
All in all this is a brilliant backup utility, mainly because it doesn't rely on someone like me to remember to run it every day!!!
