This package seems great and could be nice for a lot of users but I need the ability to get images in the component to open in a lightbox, not just in the module. Seems weird that this would be the case.
Overall it works well except for my fatal error.

I got scared when I saw some comments like 'I got crazy stuff'...Its totally amazing! Flickr4J has a seamless integration.
Yes there is one issue...
e.g. The 'bot_flickr4j_set' does not shows the relevant text of the photo :(. I am trying to use it to show profiles of people... So at present I can only show photos with photo title but there is no option to see the backside or relevant text of the photo.
Cheers,
Keep the good work going.
Waiting for the new component!

I got crazy trying to get this to work. Made all suggested adjustments, but still got the error message:
The Flickr API returned error code #1: Photoset not found
But finally I found out that the Flickr pics were set to private. Once I set them to Public everything worked like a charm.
Have tried Flickr Badge Plugin and Flickurpic too, but prefer Flickr4J. Best integration as far as I can see.

Hello,
in order to get this tool running, you must update your phpFlickr extension in the server.
Get the latest from: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=139987
Enjoy!

I can confirm that this extension needs to be updated to work with php5. After moving from a host with php4, all pages using the flickr4j mambot fail with
Fatal error: ... PEAR/Net/URL.php on line 40.
After unpublishing this mambot, pages work again. Other than that, a great extension which I enjoyed using.

I really like this extension a lot. Keep up the fine work! I had no trouble installing it and setting the parameters. The tutorial mentioned on the flickr4j website was helpful.
I am having a little problem with the "next" and "prev" navigation cues not displaying. I can see them fine on Nicolas's site where there is a working demo of this extension. I mention this in case someone has an idea for me. (Could the problem be that my server is running PHP 5.2?)
Anyways, I do hope that the developer will keep working on this as it is a very useful extension.

One of my current favorite extensions - documentation is great on the Flickr4J site and I haven't experienced any errors.
Lovely photo display and retrieval - and multiple ways to pull images from Flickr (set, photo at one of three sizes, tag cloud & more) - make this a very useful component.
Should be really useful for anyone with a Flickr Account.
Great work - Thanks!!!

This is a great extension once you get the settings right. For anyone who is interested I have created a tutorial on how to get it working, this is an accumulation of a few peoples findings plus how I managed to get over some of the errors.

I emailed developer but got no reply, which is unfortunate since it seems like a great plugin without other competitive options.
I have simple gallery installed, and for some reason there is either a conflic with simple gallery or ?
If I have a photo that is using simple gallery code on the same page as the flickr code then the AJAX part works, but if only has flickr code the AJAX doesn't work.
The popup box appears but the background doesn't blackout nor does the image load.
Simple gallery is for a photo gallery and not flickr photos, so anyone know how to have a solution for both general photos and flickr photos on the same site without conflict?

This is a really good extension: providing a link between our favorite Joomla! and an excellent application.
Would appreciate the possibility to have my registered/special users publish to flickr through this component.

I emailed the developer but didn't receive a response. This extension was working great, but now any set I've created since May returns an error and the page is not displayed. Here is the error: "The Flickr API returned error code #1: Photoset not found". I'm not sure why sets prior to May still work and others don't. Anyone have any ideas? It really is a great extension...when it's working.

This is a great Component! The other reviews were helpful in problem solving. I followed the steps as posted on another review, thanks for putting them all in sequence like that. After I did everything perfectly mine still didn't work, giving the standard error message. I realized the problem was the "set name". I was putting the name that I gave the set (ie. "family") and not the numerical set name that Flickr assigns to it. Once I put in the numerical name, it worked perfectly and now I am up and running. To find out the numerical name just hover your cursor over a set or right-click on the Set and choose "info" from the drop-down menu and it will show the name as a number sequence (I am on a Mac so PC might be slightly different). Anyways, hope this helps some of you out.

I installed all the components, configured them and get PHP errors when I publish the modules. I went to the authors site, but code has not been updated in quite a while (May 2006). Still looking for a Flickr extention.

I agree with apt. I get the same error. Also, there is noe user forum for this plugin so where can one get helt / support?
"Followed instructions, setup API key but get a 'The Flickr API returned error code #1: User not found' error. Reported to developer and in their forums but can anyone help?

I read through some of the postings here, and I think I understand why people are receiving an error. I followed the instructions to a T. There's no good summary for the order of events, but it worked for me as follows (I'm on php4 using the rc2 versions of flickr4j):
1. Log in to your flickr account and generate an API key
2. Install the phpflickr library bot
3. Add your API key and username to the phpflickr library bot. NOTE: And this is key -- Your username here is NOT your Flickr/yahoo log in (e.g. login@yahoo.com). It is literally the public username visible on your Flickr page. When you are logged in to Flickr, it will say "logged in as: [username]" at the top of the screen. This is the username you need to provide to flickr4j. Without it, you will receive the errors already mentioned on this page regarding Flickr API not recognizing the user.
3. Install the component, other bots and modules; publish the modules and bots. NOTE: The component itself has no backend interface.
4. Use the developers provided tags for embedding photos and sets into content, and link a menu to the component if you want to display all sets Flickr-style.
The username is the key, and the package works beautifully once it is configured properly.

Had wonderful success with this entire package up until my provider went to PHP 5.2.1.
At which point, everything within the com_flickr functionality crashed and I can't rebuild it (including doing a version upgrade on the phpFlickr code as well)
The edition of phpFlickr included in flick4j isn't PHP 5.x compliant and since this project (flick4j) isn't being updated or revised, I've hit a major brickwall. That said, if you upgrade the phpFlickr version inside it, you're halfway to making it work with PHP 5.2.1 and above.

Flickr4j is the only gallery component that uses free image hosting service outside your website. That means you can save many server space and your bandwidth.
The mambot is also very good to insert a single photo or a set of photos from Flickr into your content.
I hope you will add new features like:
1. Allow for uploading images from this component directly into Flickr account, can choose photo set name if possible.
2. Assign a new set to each registered user, so that they can have their OWN album in your gallery.
3. Move the parameters of the component from menu page to component configuration backend.
Thanks.

This thing operates great. Not only does it let you host your photos offsite (flickr) but it lets you display random pics and integrates a flickr esc interface into the site. Meaning people viewing your photos wont be taken away from your site to see them.
I did have some problems at first.... Need to make sure you install the bot that is marked Lib first or it wont work correctly..... Its the library all the others run off of. Also make sure you activate that mambot as well.
Thats my only complaint works great with both sets and and just photos set on your flickr account. Two things merging wonderfully like this is great!

Very nice. Does exactly what it says. The one thing I felt could be better (not being too familiar with Flickr) is perhaps improving the documentation to explain about the photo id. I ended up just right clicking on the Flickr photo that I wanted and viewing the name in properties, and then inserting that into the tag, which seems to work fine. But hey, can't complain about free software, hence the excellent rating.

I can't get it work at all. I suspect this is just another of those perennial problems that spring up due to the many different environments we run Joomla in, but after trying a couple of 'fixes' I'm done. I just don't have the time or knowledge to debug it.
The problem is that there isn't any clear checklist of requirements for it to run. What this project needs is an experienced Joomla-naut who can diagnose the problems people are reporting in the forum and pin down what those requirements are.
So, I say give it a try. If it works for you, you'll probably love it. If it doesn't you won't really know why.

Owner's reply
i think i can fix some of those incompatibilities in the next version that i'm currently working on. i think the flickr4j addons don't run very well under php5 but this is just a guess.
