Been using SMO Shoutbox on Joomla 1.0.x for over a year and it's fantastic! Wish it would work on Joomla 1.5.

It's a simple chat, and that's all I wanted or needed.

Only one suggestion. Actually it's a major oversight that may force me to restrict it to back end use. I'm on a shared host and have to cut the sql queries way back (I've set them to 60 seconds). Unfortunately there is no flood control, and there really ought to be. It's a pretty basic need in any Web based chat function. When entries are only sent every 60 seconds, it's going to be tempting for users to get frustrated, and make multiple sends to each other thinking they are not being answered. The chat window being so small, (I don't want it any bigger), it could be a real pain for users to have to scroll up and down trying to make sense of the delayed exchanges.

Could we please, please get flood control in this???

I found that it increased my sql queries by 100 or more. I have no idea why. Also slowed the site down considerably (I guess because of the sql).

Im not sure if I missed anything in the setup.

Will keep trying to use though.

The first shout module that actually works and properly displays characters as it should. Easy to install with clear instructions on how to modify the template index. Would have got an excellent rating if there were clues given as to where to modify the layout and styles used.

Its a great thing, but can not be used for languages different than English.
My site is charset windows-1251, and everything looks great even after I shout but ... after reloading the page, Cyrillic letters turn into monkey letters.

It is a good shoutbox. I like the fading messages. It would be great if once could edit the shout instead of just deleting them.

It would also be great if the number of shouts to be displayed could be increase. I think the default display just 10 shouts.

tried to install some other shout boxes AJAX and got syntax errors so gave up. Installed this little tool and easy pc. I also dont like the blue border default and new messages are not readable as they are overlaying the latest message header so it all joombaled.

Nice ext. It works is easy to install, and looks nice. I love it and so does the rest of the users. I would prefer more
config options, but. . . It is great for what it has

A great little shoutbox. Easy to install, but can get rather long and narrow and take up a lot of vertical space when situated in left/right column and the username can get overly obtrusive in the small space. The width of the scrolling sidebar is too large in relation to the total width and could be made narrower or a single character at the top only. The rather narrow entry box, at first glance, makes it appear that the message itself would be limited. No issues as yet, after 2 weeks online. Allows shouts to be displayed to all but shout input can be restricted to members only so it's very useful as it allows members to enter feedback on events or receive substantial amounts of information from the committee.

It could also be utilised hierarchically for committee members only, to instantly communicate important messages.

It would be better if admins could delete remarks easily from the front end rather than the longwinded delete process it has at present. The smileys are also a nice addition

Good extension to have on my site.. However, I am unable to figure out where to edit the width of the textbox as well as the border color as it doesnt fit in my nav bar, and the color doesnt go with my site..

All in all this is by far the best free shoutbox for Joomla but i'd like, instead of the "Last Message: XX ago", the date of shouting (with time naturally) to the shout direct.
Well the shoutbox is regulary used at my page but without the date it's hard to separate the already seen shouts from the new shouts.

In search of a chat component I gave SMO Ajax Shoutbox a trial. It is small and has only a few options to set. Nothing special, only basic features. The real drawback of this component is the usage of AJAX. A general bug of AJAX is that it can't handle UTF-8 encoded characters. So this component can't handle umlauts. They will be displayed as unreadable signs. My try for a hack failed. Recherches in forums brought no solution. So this component is useless for germans, french,...

Just install the module and the component and add 2 lines to the template index file. Very easy. The shoutbox looks clear and easy to use. Has nice amount of options you can change from administration.
