Joomla Ajax Chat is a web based chat application developed entirely in JavaScript on the user end, with mySQL and PHP on the backend.
The chat script is fully integrated as a Joomla Component and supports Joomla 1.0+ as well as Mambo 4.5.2+
Joomla Ajax Chat is developed both for the average Joomla user and developers. It includes custom templates, an extension framework for developers to extend the Chat functionality as well as plug in existing components.
Support for BBCode, Smileys with a IM like toolbar for formatting your chat messages. Custom bad word filters, word transformation, and php filters for messages.
Full seperation of server and client, allowing developers to use the Server API and Client API seperately, or even write their own chat client (js or otherwise). Developer Docs will be available soon.

Problems with mootools by victune, April 11, 2008
|
I think this joomla chat is the best around.
I play with it and it very powerful compare to other joomla chats.
There is one big problem, which the developer not mention: if you are using mootools (like in your template), then on Explorer you will get JS error and it disable all your mootools functionality.
This issue can be seen on the developer demo page.
I asked the developer about it 2 months ago...but nothing.

I have had the chat for quite some time and while I was reluctant to pay for a chat, I feel that it was a sound investment for my site. I have not had any issues with it. I have had some problems with the shout out module that goes with it and when I have asked for support, I got it promptly.

It's set up and working. Just a few quirks:
1. The text in the notification window is too light to read.
2. The Liveusers Mod that comes with it doesn't poll and update, forcing users to refresh their browser to detect new users logged in.
3. Liveusers Mod doesn't give a visual indication of those users currently in a public chat room.
4. Liveusers Mod doesn't show how many members and how many guests are online.
These are relatively minor issues that hopefully someone can address for me. But the primary functionality, private and public chatting, seems to be working great! At one point in testing I did get an error from my server host saying that I had exceeded my quota of CPU time and my web site was shut down. Luckily, I got it back up in a few minutes. I hope this isn't a problem as I get more people using it.

Dreadful by BrownSouth, March 22, 2007

Joomla Ajax Chat is completely, dreadfully terrible. Just like the others, I first started off happy with Ajax Chat. After 1 day I found many bugs and issues. I also found out that isnt very powerful. It crashed with only 2 people chatting. Put 10 people on it and it probly will explode!
The only reason I installed this script is because FlashChat cant support many users chatting at once. Now, it seems that FlashChat can support way more users chatting at once then Ajax Chat. I would recommend you not buying this product. The people who have given good reviews are wrong about this product. Dont waste your money and time. Its sad that a $5 script like FlashChat is better coded and have more features then a $50 rip off called ajax chat.

Nice component, but... by t.mikael.d, March 15, 2007

I really love this component, as long as you use it as it is and dont combine with any other ajax scripts. Ive asked gabe about it integrating with mootools, he answered nicely back with short response and said that he would look into it. Altough, now it have gone a few months and no answer. Im starting to think that mootools plus this chat, is a no go. It would be to hard to rewrite the layup for it to combine. So if you want ajax + this chat, then you have to go with jQuery.

im going to have to agree with jdl123, things started out great with this product, but slowly i found more and more things that didn't work. gabe was great and responsive at first, but i haven't heard from him in weeks. considering that this is one of the few joomla components i actually PAID for (50 hard earned dollars no less), i'm really, really disappointed. like jdl123, id ask for money back, but i doubt i would get a response. if you're considering a chat solution, PLEASE, i beg you, look elsewhere.

Worst. Support. Ever! by oleros2, February 15, 2007

Hey Jdl23, it's not just you. My review could be a blueprint of yours. It looked promising but there are bugs and shortcomings and no one to answer questions. I have seriously sent about 20 requests the lasts couple of months and have gotten one or two answers saying there is a new version on the way. I'm starting to believe this is a direct lie. Gabe told me there is a coup in Fiji and hence the lack of support, ok, good reason, but why the #&%! don't they inform the customers about this on the website??? Probably because Joomla has a god damn problem when it comes to good chat solutions and us poor suckers pay up in desperation. Stay away from Fiji Web Design!!

Great Chat Client with Phenomenal Support by jasontmartinez27, February 13, 2007

This chat client offers many great features as well as config settings. Easy install, easy to use. WELL WORTH THE MONEY. The support the developer gives is EXCELLENT! I have contacted him at least 5 times and have received a reply within 30 minutes each time. He even went as far as helping accommodate a client's request for a non-standard feature. Two thumbs up!

I really like Ajaxchat, it has a plethora of configuration settings and integrates very smooth into my site.
I also love the Community Builder compabillity, the fixed mod_liveuser modul and the shoutbox.
Besides that Gabes support is excellent...

After what was a very promising start, things went bad quickly. I thought that this was it...easy install, easy to configure, some nice bells and whistles (especially with the live users module), and above all the prompt and friendly service.
It all went away though. I have discovered many bugs in this program that have made it more or less unusable. The worse thing though is the unanswered mails from the vendor. It really seemed that the service was going to be great. I had some feature requests that Gabe promised would be in the next version which made me happy and had my propellor spinning fastly. But alas, it was not to be....bugs are still there, feature requests remain just that, all my mails seem to have vanished...and on the fijiwebdesign web site I no longer have access to download the product I paid for (the support mail about this also was ignored).
I would demand my money back, but if simple support emails are not even deemed important enough to answer, a refund mail probably would be laughed at.
Judging by the other reviews, I must be the exception. Hard to believe though.
Oh well, once is on me. Never again fijiwebdesign.

Very Good component by shirdi, December 16, 2006

If you want a decent near real time chat mdoule/component, then this is one of the best out there and it should be as you have to pay for it. Any enquiries are answered in a timely manner so the support is there if that is one of your concerns. The developer is also very open to suggestions on modules.
No issues on the install via the standard Joomla Admin installer and the management of the chat rooms etc. are pretty much self explanatory. The interface is clean, very professional and the default template integrates seemlessly with the Joomla site template in the front end as well as being fully customisable.
Don't expect an IRC type of performance as it is Ajax refresh based and can lag by a few seconds, but compare that to a cluttered message board and this is a winner.
If there is a minor draw back it is the maintenance of log files. It would be nice if there was a configurable setting to purge logs that older than a certain date.
Keep up the good work on the development of this nice component.

This was well worth the $!
Holy cow this is nice. Works with my community builder setup, pop up window or inline chat option, templating for it is easy as pie.. it uses some of the site's default template but for backgrounds you have to modify one of its existing templates or make a whole new one. Either way, not hard at all.
I was worried bout paying $50.00 for a chat... but I'm quite glad I did.
Nice Work guys!

Quick n'easy: The best chat component for Joomla OS I've ever seen. Further, the support is extremely fast. The installation went like a chame.
Enjoy this component!
