How to install NEWS FEEDS (nf_scroller_XT) by skaitjindi, November 10, 2007
Note: Copy and modify a little form the previous user comments. Hope they don’t mind in the name of helping others.
DOWNLOAD from
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/nf_scroller_xt/frs/
Latest release as of November 2007 is 1.3.5. Download both com and mod.

INSTALL com_ and mod_ as usual.
Thanks to other posters for clarifying the installations and configuration.
The component is only good if you are going to create a menu pointing to the component (news feed). It is easier to point a menu to a component, tahts’ why the component for.
“-the feed (and I am talking about the rss/url to the feed) has to be previously defined in the basic feeder (I am using the original com_newsfeeds loaded with joomla).” Meaning define category and items under Components ŕNews FeedsŕManage Category and then manage News Feeds.
Automatically these feeds will appear in nf_scroller_XT.
-the MODULE CONFIGURATION:
--model class suffix: leave it empty, this is too much for me and I didn't need it
--source: I could not make it work for "all- this work for me" but this wasn't my intent, you can also choose "cat" (for category--) or "single", I chose "single"
--Breaks Chars: Yes
CATEGORY NAME: yes
FEED NAME: yes
The rest of the options I set it to: no. These are all optional to you and the real estate you have to work with.
The alignment and height and width are all explanatory.
--align: the text inside the feed (any will do)
--behavior: if you chose up or down in the direction, choose scroll here, if left or right, choose slide.
--height: simple: how high will the module be
--wight: 100% to fit in the module.

I highly recommend it, it gives a little professional touch to the Joomla News Feed.

it works great... by kindoflost, September 16, 2007

...but is not as straightforward as most other extensions.
Since the creator's website seems unavailable now for this product I will summarize what I found out so that others don't spend few hours making it work.
Thanks to other posters for clarifying that:
-the component does not appear to do much
-the feed (and I am talking about the rss/url to the feed) has to be previously defined in the basic feeder (I am using the original com_newsfeeds loaded with joomla). When you define a feed in com_newsfeeds you give it a name and put it in a category, and these names and categories are what you will use in nf_scroller_XT

I loaded both the component and the module, both version 1.3.5, not sure that the component is needed and like others said, does not point to anything we can understand (must be doing something under the covers...)
-setting it up was, for me, trial and error
-the module configuration:
--model class suffix: leave it empty, this is too much for me and I didn't need it
--source: I could not make it work for "all" but this wasn't my intent, you can also choose "cat" (for category) or "single", I chose "single"
--category names: I left empty as i chose "single"
--single feed name: I wrote the name of the feed exactly (copy and paste) as I have it named in com_newsfeeds
--the rest gives you the option to show different parts of the news feed but BY DEFAULT THEY ARE ALL OFF, set one on at a time to figure out what they do, normally you would want to show at least the feed title.
--the bars are only to separate the feed display
--another trick: break chars BY DEFAULT (I think) SOME OF THEM ARE ON but the character field to use is empty, when this is empty it would use the default character. The problem is that BY DEFAULT the DEFAULT CHARACTER IS EMPTY TOO. You can set the default character towards the bottom (the third field from the bottom up)
--I did not experiment with the linkable option since I am not planning to use it
--direction: up/down, left/right
--align: the text inside the feed (any will do)
--behavior: if you chose up or down in the direction, choose scroll here, if left or right, choose slide.
--height: simple: how high will the module be
--wight: same
--scrollamount and srolldelay: I don't have them figure out yet but together seem to only set the speed (of scroll or slide)
--marquee options: I left empty
-- I didn't touch the rest (except that I wrote a default character to be safe, but since I chose to scroll I don't use any characters

Thumbs up to the apps features, the usability is tricky (for a newby like me) documentation unavailable.
I recommed it anyway... totally worth the setup time

Documentation needed but works great by kaizen, June 25, 2007

Like the previous kind poster, I'll add a bit of the info I figured out in hopes of helping others - Feeds must *first* be set up in the core newsfeeds module. Then you use *this* scroller to present them. The component is only necessary if you want to create a menu item that takes you to a content area with scrolling feeds (I'm sure there's a reason for this but haven't figured it out yet....) and then you set the parameters up in the menu item.

Confusing? A bit, but if you read this post and the post below it, it shuold be easier to setup and once it's configure it works awesome. If you want to scroll news feeds, this is currently the only game in town.

couldnt make it work by insomnio, April 28, 2007
its a nice idea!
in fact its perfect but the only problem its that it doesnt work...
all very confusing about installing the component and the module, and the menu link....

PS: to the other reviewers, when you click in the component linkd drives you nowear, but thats explained in the wiki at developer site. but ... pretty poor info...

hope to get another version soon!
ill be waiting

thanx anyway!

Works Great! by Asphyx, January 3, 2007
This module works well. Wene imrpoved upon code I once made for Mambo and added a ton of features. I no longer use my own modules newsfeed scroller pro as this does a lot more than even I attempted.

Highly configurable and flexible!

Only note and it is no fault of Wene as I had the same problem....
Marquee is not really Accessible and will not WCAG Validate.
I highly suggest anyone using my old scroller to update to this one!

Useful module for news by shinab812, November 19, 2006

I have found this module to be very useful for a displaying newsfeed items in a limited space. It also draws attention to them by its scrolling motion. No other offering that I've found here provides a similar function.

The module has been in use on my site (http://www.peacenorth.org) for several years now (currently 1.3.1 installed - As of July 2006 latest version was 1.3.5).

It does require a bit of testing and configuration to get it set up to your preferences. The module has definable character sets and has a way to replace gibberish characters with readable ones - something that has vexed me about the core feed displays. (Hopefully UTF8 in joom1.5 will help here).

While I haven't tried the component yet, the developer's Wiki states that the administrator interface doesn't "drive" anywhere - it is only meant to to allow for creating a menu item configured by that item's parameters. Of course this is confusing if you expect some kind of configuration in the components section.

The developer states that his day job does not allow him to spend to much time supporting this - not uncommon for a project of this scope. There is the forums on the forge however. The updates from earlier in 2006 show that work has been done correcting all known bugs.

Component Not Working. by jazza, July 13, 2006

Installation went through fine without a glitch. Tried to access the nf_scroller_XT component through the administrator page and it dont seem to be working. Just keeps reloading the main admin page.

When publishing the module, this error shows up:
Warning: modoutput_table(/home/XXXXX/public_html/joomla/modules/mod_nf_scroller_XT.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/XXXXX/public_html/joomla/includes/frontend.html.php on line 309

More work required on this one. No point downloading it at this stage unless you are up for some de-bugging.
