The new version of Productbook, version 1.0.4 runs with RG_Emulation set to OFF, also with Registered Globals set to OFF.
This version should also fix the error in the categorie setup some people encountered.

A fairly Good Component by manamedia, March 22, 2008

Basically does what it says it does. My Only observations are:
1. Upon Install, even though in the install.php file, the image folder creators are set to CHMOD 0777, upon install, they are set to 700 - this means you cannot delete any image files within these folders via ftp
2. There should be a delete image function in the Admin Panel for Product Book, this would be helpful for those who don't know how to locate the folders via ftp.
Would be great to know why the images folders (img_originals, img_pictures, img_thumbnails) do not CHMOD 777 upon install, and if there is a way around it.
Otherwise, not a bad product

Extremely Buggy, Limited Features by beebogates, March 14, 2008
|
The component keeps losing my entries, product details. there are various bugs, the graphical design is not customizable and I had to code in extra DIVs before I can even get to use it. customization is very limited. you are better off using any other component unless this one fits your needs perfectly, where you should be ready to make extensive repairs.

At first I thought it was clashing with Virtuamart until I tried installing it on just a basic Joomla 1.13. It basically hangs during the category setup. Please fix this so it is simple to install also please provide full instructions on the installation in case I am doing something wrong. There's more than one place to configure the category setting. Either within itself or via Joomlas internal setup. The Product Books own Category setup is where mine hung during installation. Why? Give fuller category setup and menu instructions please. Owner's reply: @fuzzyphil
Categorie setup in version 1.0.4 is now changed to prevent the endless loop you encountered, which I just recently was aware of this error.
I am also creating more manuals in the main site, including setup instructions.
Could you email, or pm my on how you used the Joomlas internal setup?

I found that the component did exactly as it said it would and worked as I expected. I was hesitant after some other reviews, but I must commend the author for making this extension relatively bug free. The only downside is that the support is hard to navigate and find, but once you have got to where you wanted, the instructions are useful for even a non-programmer like me. Some more options in the configuration would be ideal like currency and element display on/off etc rather than PHP re-write. Overall, it is where I wanted it to be and is a very useful component.

Absolutely a great extension. I don't need a shopping cart ... only a product catalogue with lots of custom fields. This fits my need perfectly!
I've not experienced the "bugs" many says they have encountered and the install went smoothly. I have noticed that when viewing the last page of any product category the table goes out of whack. It could be a Joomla template problem or a bug.
It would be nice to have a help forum to work out such code tweaks but it seems nothing more is happening with this component.

Buggy Image Uploading by fugazer, May 30, 2007

Downloaded version 1.0.3 but had little success. It has problems with generating the image thumbnails. Changing the image directories seemed to be another problem. If changed the images do not upload..
Too bad.. This component has great potential. Owner's reply: Although a support question, please make sure that the directories are writable otherwise it won't work...
Upload size is limited, can be set in configuration screen.

I am using the v1.0.3, every features claimed by the author are working properly.
Instead of shopping cart, it is better to describe this component as a display menu of products, because it contained no cart/payment function. Therefore you must understand what you are expecting from this component, otherwise you may be disappointed.

I installed Productbook 1.0.3 and liked it so. Congratulations!
I think it will be better next time. I have a little problem with it. I like visitors see link of product owner profil in product page and send message him/her. I use community builder component and like to integrate productbook with community builder.
Is it possible you create this codes or file for communit builder integration.

Reg Globals On by Chinaman, May 6, 2007

As Joomla recommends Register Globals to be Off, to have this addition, one that I was surely thinking I could use, to require the setting to be ON, why would I compromise.
Or am I missing something here? Owner's reply: The latest release, version 1.0.3 should run with Register Globals Off without problems.

After using Virtuemart I was looking for another way to expose my products. Thats why Iīm trying Productbook.
My first try was in my already working homepage but it didnīt work at all. I goy just those problems related in this side.
You have to add the component in a clean new install of Joomla and you will be impressed.

My apologies I uploaded the wrong file by Hummerbie, December 12, 2006

I am truly sorry for any inconvenience and frustration my mistake caused.
The right installation file is now uploaded, and I tested it on several systems.
I also made a clearer indication of the necessary setting to install and work with the component.
Again my apologies for my mistake :-(
[Editor note: LorenzoG - Hummerbie is the owner for this Extension. Therefore I have approved this submission.]

This extension looks very nice, and was *exactly* what I've been looking for.
However, it doesn't work at all. The back end is fine, and the categories on the front end turns up and looks right. Then - nothing works. It refuse to link to any products, but stays on the first page no matter what.
Finally, after searching on the author's webpage, I found out that he was well aware that his extension had bugs, and have been for quite some time. Could have told it more clearly as it would have spared me many hours of frustration.

lots of bugs by baijianpeng, November 30, 2006

It looks very nice. But after installed, bugs come one after one.
First, I go to the configuration page. When I click on the Save button to save my settings, strangely all those fields was emptyed.
Then I add a category. But when I click on the category name to edit it, I noticed that the next page was not the Editing page, but the Adding new category page.
Of course my new added catogery was not published. So I click on the red cross to publish it, just as I do in other Joomla pages. But the red-cross still show as before even after I saw a pop-up dialog saying "Publicare"(sorry, it really said something not English).
The worst is, I can't upload any image !
My God, I can't understand why the author hasn't upgraded it for such a long time.

After looking at php errors for 4 hours i gave up!
I might not be a programmer, but i do understand some code! to bad understanding is not enough for this extension.
I think it is a grand idea to make it as is displayed in the demo!
yet i got this eerie feeling when the installation had to be unzipped and then a couple of folders further down the root of folders i saw the folder with the content!
i zipped that folder then i could install it!
then i couldnt upload any pictures...
i got the fix for that and the other fix too cause nuttin seemed to fase!
i hope this harsh (and lowest rating) only motivates you! in making a script that works!
