DOCman is a document management and download system for Joomla!. With this component your users can easily upload and manage files across multiple categories and make them available for download on a your Joomla! websites.
Main features:

DOCman & PDF and DOC Indexer - perfect match by rkmani, October 4, 2008

I feel this should be mentioned here. PDFs and DOCs can be indexed and searched within DOCman documents. Please read my revived for PDF Indexer and do the necessary. Read my review at (http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,741/Itemid,35/#rev-29929)

Thanks to the authors for this great extension!, its an excellent solution
It would be nice that this extension works together with PDF Indexer or DOC Indexer extension, to provide a full solution to Joomla Community.

Server well till the point by Prutkar, July 16, 2008

I was happy with DocMan for a while, till I started to get "Memory allocation failures" on 300kb file downloads or even just when I tried to load category list. First I solved it by increasing php.ini variable from default 8MB to more. Every month or so this error came back and I had to increase this php limit. It worked ok. After a while when I had to increase this limit again, this time to 220MB, but error was not going away, I reached the point when I was not willing to use DocMan anymore. On top of everything docman homepage shows "Bandwidth limit reached" error so not help there at all. Nice product but this is unacceptable.

After starting to use Joomla 1.5.3, I have been very careful to ensure all the extensions install all work fully. I am glad to confirm that Docman definately gets the thumbs up. I cant understand what went wrong for Yamada (from a previous review) but I did not need to do any of what he/she stated, nor did I get any installation errors.
Apache Version : 2.2.8
PHP Version : 5.2.6
MySQL Version : 5.0.51b

sorry but i cant be that positive like the rest here.
i tried to install it for a friend on a 1.5.3 and willing to use it with legacy.
but it wouldnt install.
all i got was errors saying i have to make my root writable and some admin folder as well.
huh..?..not in a million years.
With joomla's 1.5 i was happy that we didnt have to touch the folders anymore, which is safer.
But docman goes his own way,and thats the wrong way.
installed another component instead.

Simple to use, plus great admin and website interfaces. Bulk file uploading is really useful. Highly recommend!

I love this whole component, but the support is nill! I have a gigantic space in between my files and my nav bar and when i went to the site for Support as it says too. There must be 50+ forum messages never replied to from last year. My site looks stupid with the component because of this and I cant figure out which page makes the extra spacing.

This should be a part of Joomla itself by Tarun, March 30, 2008

I really like this extension. It should be integrated into all Joomla installations.
One thing I would like to see change is to have a short description for the files when you view them on a page. If you view the file's page itself, the full description would be shown.
A few users have been thrown off by clicking the title to view it and getting the download instead, so a small change there may be nice.
Otherwise, it's very nice and works far better than anything I've ever seen in other CMS softwares.

Documents in a child window by Militis, March 28, 2008

DOCman is great!
Unless I'm overlooking the desired functionality, couple of recommendations...
Allow the user to open documents in a child/flyout window (with the window parameters selectable - chrome, toolbars, size, position, etc).
Allow the user to drill into the dmdocuments directory and select the file in a sub-folder.
Allow DOCman to launch not only the file but also related components in relative directories ./images, ./script. This would allow e-books such created by "exe" the "eLearning XHTML Editor" from eXeLearning.org. There are a number of advantages to this format.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks,
-Jay
