DOCman

Main features:
* Infinite categories and subcategories. The documents can be organized across custom categories and subcategories;
* Files can be hosted locally or on a remote server
* Access control: Documents can be assigned to specific user or to custom groups of users
* Download counter and log. You can display a download counter per document and all the downloads can be logged (by user, IP, browser, date and hour);

It will be more perfect if following features can be supported:
1. Rating
2. Write review
Thank you for you feedback. DOCman does indeed check to see if the Joomla root folder is writable when it creates the dmdocuments folder, if the root is not writable it will display a warning at install time. Once the dmdocuments folder has been created you can and should set your permissions back to normal. Hope this helps to answer your problem.
It would be nice that this extension works together with PDF Indexer or DOC Indexer extension, to provide a full solution to Joomla Community.
Thank you for your feedback. We have had issues with memory use in DOCman in the past but those should be fixed in the 1.4.x version. If you still have problems feel free to contact us and we are happy to help you.
Apache Version : 2.2.8
PHP Version : 5.2.6
MySQL Version : 5.0.51b
i tried to install it for a friend on a 1.5.3 and willing to use it with legacy.
but it wouldnt install.
all i got was errors saying i have to make my root writable and some admin folder as well.
huh..?..not in a million years.
With joomla's 1.5 i was happy that we didnt have to touch the folders anymore,which is safer.
But docman goes his own way,and thats the wrong way.
installed another component instead.
DOCman does indeed ask you to make your root writable to be able to add the dmdocuments folder. Once the folder has been created you can revert your permissions back.
One thing I would like to see change is to have a short description for the files when you view them on a page. If you view the file's page itself, the full description would be shown.
A few users have been thrown off by clicking the title to view it and getting the download instead, so a small change there may be nice.
Otherwise, it's very nice and works far better than anything I've ever seen in other CMS softwares.
Unless I'm overlooking the desired functionality, couple of recommendations...
Allow the user to open documents in a child/flyout window (with the window parameters selectable - chrome, toolbars, size, position, etc).
Allow the user to drill into the dmdocuments directory and select the file in a sub-folder.
Allow DOCman to launch not only the file but also related components in relative directories ./images, ./script. This would allow e-books such created by "exe" the "eLearning XHTML Editor" from eXeLearning.org. There are a number of advantages to this format.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks,
-Jay
Could use some added features like the ability to use multiple directories for files on the server. You have to use one directory so you are forced to have unique names on every file. Hoping they incorporate allowing you to assign a server directories for each category in Docman and a few other requests I have made in their forum. Over all this has been one of the best extensions for Joomla.
THANKS A TON FOR THE GREAT WORK ON THIS APP!!!!!
