FlexContent
FlexContent is a module that allows for flexible display of introductory text, title, and an image from any content item. It is designed for showing either single items in an unusual way (for instance, showing an image that doesn't appear in the main article above the intro text, with the image hyperlinked to the main article) or multiple items with related styles.

Unique features:
Can produce hyperlinked images in output, with no CSS fiddling to make title block cover image
Can apply style classes in a cyclic manner, for any length cycles
Can be used as many times as required in a single page
Has option to add a link to category/section after displaying articles from a section or category
Sections and Categories can be selected from drop down lists
Can restrict selection of items based on creation time/date
Can read RSS feeds and output in the same format as local content

Version 1.1 adds the option to restrict article selection based on creation time/date, the ability to process content mambots (still experimental - it will cause increased CPU load/queries, depending on your site's mambots) and feed processing ability.

The image shows 2 instances of the FlexContent module - the top is a box set to display 5 articles from section, with images first, then titles, then text (styled appropriately), and the bottom is set to show the latest article from a section, linking through to the section, and with title-image-text layout.

Demo URL goes to a live site - feel free to view source and see how much of it relies on FlexContent!

incredibly nice by Palantir, July 14, 2008
Hi, I was trying to find a module to give me the option of displaying things the way I want and flexcontent gave me the solution right on.

Unlike others, i like very much that it doesn't have any pre-defined styling into it but instead it gives raw output of the articles.

There is only one thing that I would really really really would want it to do, the {mosimage} is not used so much since new and richer WYSIWUG editors such as JCE came out and they use html to insert img tags into the article.

Is there any way to implement this ability into the code of flexcontent ? To fetch the images in that was also ?

Thanks very much :D

Fantastic Module... by zorro1900, June 9, 2008
It is a very nice module that let's you combine css plus joomla content... you can control rss feeds, news with images direcly from your content categories...and create easy to maintain news, feeds, etc.

I have a question for the developer? Did you use any option for your "CYCLE" feature for your following site? http://www.builderandengineer.co.uk/ I can not make the images appear.. Do you mind sharing your settings for the features2 class that display the images for this site.

It will help to have some documentation specially with some css examples on how to make images get displayed which seems to be the difficult part of this module...

more flexible by corfulander, May 1, 2008

i've tested all content item modules showing intro text with images and this is the best!

but, there could be some more things turning it to Ecxellent!

1. HTML tags and links from intro text support, with an option in admin area to enable it.
2. Image resizing to selected width or heigh (as it works on article thubnails module for example)

also, there is a small bug perhaps:
in my installation flexcontent module shows also deleted content items from trash

PS. i hope you change this things. Me and many others could donate for this awesome module.
Thanks for reading

great component by anibal, December 28, 2007

I needed a component which works exactly as Flex does. It's very simple to install and use. If you know how to correctly use the css you can do great things with it.

The only bad point I have to report is a trouble with the pathway displayed, when I click on an article based in Flex the article appears but not the pathway.
Maybe there's a trick to make it appear but I couldn't find it.

Otherwise ... thank you a lot guys for this great job !!

I love it! by ByeVas, October 20, 2007
It works like a charm! My favourite extension! Brings more flexibility to Joomla, than everything I had tested! Only 1 thing is troubling me, I can't choose several articles by id to show on the page. However it is simply THE BEST joomla component!

Really great focused management of content by mhilliard, October 10, 2007
Thanks for building this tool... It has saved my bacon on more than one occasion with clients wanting something specific in a specific place.

My only complaint mirrors some of the others: Links (and HTML styling) already in the content is stripped out. Is there any way to keep embedded links in the copy? Has anyone tweaked the PHP to make this work?

Fabulous tool!

Invaluble Module by supercool, October 5, 2007
I've used this module for a couple of sites now and i think it's marvellous. I personally don't like the way joomla display content blogs. The main problem is mosimages are always inbeded in p tags and it means a lot of site have that joomla look about them.

With flex content you can build nice menu pages in CSS with article thumbnail image, title, date, text, and author, or a combinitation, and style each element how you wish.

You can control the word count so the unlike joomla default you don't have to split articles up into intro text and then main body, the module will do it for you.

But the best thing is the fact that you can show an image automatically from the articles image list, but obviously if it has no mostag in the article you don't have to have it in the article itself - genious.

The only problem i've found is that it strips all html our of text. For example i'm using the module on a page showing alot of text from each article from a section, and all of the links within the have been stripped out. Is there a fix for this, or something i'm doing wrong?

Amazing Module! by pelluco, July 20, 2007
Hello, this is a great Module, it works perfect and the code is simple and clean to add CSS custom attributes.

My only concern is that for some reason, the module is not parsing the HTML tags (ie: br, strong, etc) so on the output they are not being showed.

I want to know how to fix it or if is it any way to configure that settings.

Anyways, this is an amazing Module who will make your life easier at the moment to design.

Seems ok by jasonrhl, June 6, 2007
Would be nice if it was able to create thumbnails from the image it selects from your article.

Hope that this can be put in to the next version

Does what it says and does it well. by TWDesigns, May 20, 2007

I was looking for a "simple" solution to pull in YouTube videos for one of my review sites. I knew I wanted to archive the video references. By doing so I wanted to use Joomlas default article system and find a module to pull in X articles intros.

Well after a few hours of playing around with others this one nailed it. It does it to the point and with ease. Some of the previous ones I tested had waaaaaay too many fields to edit and the end result was not pleasing for my needs.

Keep up the great work!

2 Column layout by edlynn, May 18, 2007
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:
Can be achieved with this component. eg for 2 column, just give your flexcontent div a width, give your flexcontentitem divs half that width, and a height, float them to the left and bobs your uncle, 2 columns.

Good component btw, was using JA-news previously but started using this one much more now.

db error 0 by torbs, May 10, 2007

Hi,

This is a great plugin that solves a lot of problems for me. It can be customized fairly easy and it easy to style with CSS.

I encountered a small error when I tried to display from a category with only unpublished items. The problem was that this error breaked my whole page.

I fixed it by removing the "die" in line 311 in the mod_flexcontent.php.

I know this is a review section, but I could not find a forum on your home page. Anyway I thought I might post it here.

Excellent but there's a possible problem... by khellhound, May 5, 2007

It works BEAUTIFULLY, and has been a life-saver, but...There's a possible security hole (although it's working like a feature for me). If you place a flex content item on a page, and set the Flexcontent module to Public - it will still display the content no matter what the access level is on the article itself (because it's pulling the articles based only on ID, not on ID and access level).

Mind you, that's what I want it to do (to display intro to public, and fulltext to registered only) - If there were an explicit way to make that happen (so I could turn it off too) that would be better...

Fantastic by malexs, February 25, 2007
This module is just what we were looking for, to create an automatic ezine style front page, like msn where it has all the little snippets available from different sections/categories on the front page. Our alternatives were d4j ezine and ijoomla magazine components, but both are not free and complex to set up.

Flexcontent is easy to set up and very flexible in what it can accomplish. Fantastic in all aspects.

Most flexible module I've found yet. by malagab, February 14, 2007
This is a great module for displaying any content from a chosen author, section, etc. It gives you flexible options such as how many words or characters, as well as pictures. I've found it very helpful to display a blog style module that shows the most current article on the front page.
Because I'm learning as I go, I found this forum link (http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,70330.0.html) helpful in using the module class suffix to set up this module.
