Ravenswood User Home Pages - UHP2
All in all good but..., October 26, 2007

Ravenswood User Home Pages - UHP2 Very very good all in all actually. However there's some limitations and bugs.

There is a LOT of customization with templates so you can make things look almost any way you want - but you're limited by fields.

The one bug I noticed (and this is just after a day here) is that the RSS pages skip the first item in the feed.

I'm going to see if I can correct that problem, but a lot of their files are encoded! They don't outright say that...meaning if you buy a license in hopes to change functionality...don't hold your breath.

The problem with things (joomla in general included) is that there is no 100% universal solution. We all know that things need to change for each job. By not having the option to do so...well, that's problematic and bad. So try try try the demo version and make sure it's EXACTLY what you want if you're thinking about removing the copyright and getting some more features. Also a site license won't work for you if you have a subdomain. Not a huge deal for what I had a subdomain for (a test/staging server) but it's quite common and feasible that one would have a subdomain on a web site for different sections...that's the SAME damn site...so what? buy a license for each subdomain? that's stupid. It is a great add on and I'm sure it took time...but being greedy on an open source project is just barking up the wrong tree. The cost is a good bit, but fair. It was well done.

FlexContent
Perfect for custom layouts, December 8, 2006

FlexContent This module had all the options that I needed. I used it to create a non-standard Joomla homepage. Of course this required coordination with the template I created, but by using this module, I was able to create a custom section layout while at the same time maintaining usability. Once the module is setup to display the proper sections/categories, the user has no need to mess with module settings, etc. they simple can write articles like normal.

With a little creativity, this module can essentially create new layout styles on top of Joomla's default "blog" and "table" views.

It is an invaluable module if you want to get away from the common layout of Joomla and have a more unique looking site. I would say that this is a critical module for that actually. The powerful options the module gives also help make it possible (so you aren't duplicating content, etc.)

shSmoothSlideshow
Nice but there was a problem, November 20, 2006

shSmoothSlideshow I really like this slideshow from jonDesign and I was actually going to create a module that uses it myself...guess I still might make one after trying this.

I had a big problem with this one. It wasn't cycling through images quite how I hoped for. The fade seems off - or rather it loads the image behind the one currently displayed to then fade the top one into the bottom one...bad if the images aren't all the same size...because naturally you can see the next one in line before it fades in anywhere that it's larger than the current image.

Then the images wouldn't center, they would actually load centered - but for some odd reason they would shift to the left on their way out.

I've tried various settings within the module parameters and did publish the mambot though I used this module in a module position and not within a content item...I'm unsure if the results would have been different inside a content item, but if I'm not mistaken this was designed as a module so I assume it should be able to be used as one.

Provided the problems get fixed, this module will actually be very good. The only thing I would like to see different is perhaps an unlimited amount of specified images so one can set descriptions and links for more than the 10 images. I know the XML is limited and it would have to be designed as component with a module...but I think that approach is better. Plus the mambot to allow publishing inside content items would then seal the deal so to speak positioning this slide show as perhaps one of the best for Joomla.
