Acajoom News
Free Version Falls a Bit Short, June 17, 2008

Acajoom News Good clean install in J! 1.5.3. However, using the free version is a bit cumbersome. For instance, there is no templating or copy that I could tell, so you have to design each newsletter from scratch. I have limited outbound email (250 messages per hour), and although Acajoom can schedule a message in increments of 10 seconds, 15 would be better for my case. When I set it up to send a message every 20 seconds, it sent the first message and then in an animated fashion it counted to 20 while I watched. Then it sent the second message, and so on. This not only ties up my admin session for a long time (my list has 175 names in it), it also makes the PHP script run longer than the maximum allowed by my server (120 seconds). I think perhaps if you can blast a single email to as many recipients as you want, this wouldn't be an issue. But that's not the case for my site.

On the positive side, the front end functions are easy to understand and the newsletter looks exactly like you expect it to look. The CB plugin is better than the component front end and seems to allow each user to select preferences such as text/html, subscribe/unsubscribe, and view archived newsletters. Although existing, unsent newsletters can be edited by the admin in the front end, new ones cannot be created.

So unless the advanced versions correct these problems, I will have to stick to using Dada Mail to sending my newsletters.

CQI - CustomQuickIcons
 Uninstall problems, January 5, 2007

CQI - CustomQuickIcons This is a nice thing to install, but upon UNinstallation I find I have NO icons whatsoever. Apparently, this doesn't reinstate the original Joomla quick icons when it is removed. Ouch!

AllVideos Plugin v2.4 - All-in-one media solution
 Feature Request, November 27, 2006

AllVideos Plugin v2.4 - All-in-one media solution I totally agree with every positive post made here regarding this plug-in. There's just one thing I need for it: the ability to temporarily disable it inline within content. Why? So I can explain how it works in an article on my site so members who actually use their blogs can include their own videos in them. Of course, it can be done by interlacing HTML within the provider tags, but it would be much nicer to have a {noavp}{/noavp} element (or something like that).

Excellent work!

 Excellent!, June 5, 2006

I installed this component and module on my HOA site and it works magnificently! Yes, I authored a module of my own that puts the WC magnet thingy on your site and I use that on sites in which it integrates well visually. THIS component works better on a SSL site because it gets its content via RSS and displays it in the local site's context. That means the user doesn't get nagged with warnings about non-secure content. This component and module also pick-up the template styles, which make it integrate nicely into the site. Well done!

Made a great basis for a petition extension, May 7, 2006
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

I have made modifications to this extension to allow it to be used as a means of sending petitions. The form layout options may not be very configurable, but that's not a big deal. My changes added some formatting options on the email message, such as including the intro text, omitting captions, and changing the field separator for each form field. This is a VERY useful extension and very easy to modify (the code is not too complex). It's also very handy to use the DBQ extension (elsewhere on this site) to view the list of signers and export it to an Excel spreadsheet. Beware: The installation XML deletes existing database tables. EXCELLENT WORK!

Need the latest (beta) version, April 22, 2006

I truly apologize for portions of my last review. The "People already registered" and CB Events tab work fine with v0.8.0. I'll let my other comments stand, even though they're probably really directed against the "sessions" component and not this one. I've installed both on one of my sites (and removed ExtCalendar2), so we'll have to see how much use the feature gets. Thanks for this great enhancement to the Events component!

Nice but limited, April 21, 2006

If you are familiar with ExtCalendar2, the Events component (download elsewhere) provides pretty much the identical function. This component provides the ability for the admin (only) to create an event "session" and associate it with an event scheduled in the calendar. A session essentially implements an RSVP-like mechanism that allows members (or the public) to register for an event. This suite works fine as long as you are okay with the admin having to define and manage every session.

Limitations: I don't see Attend Events doing some of the things it claims above to do, such as presenting the sessions alongside the events. I also don't see a way for it to display a list of who's "People already registered" in the front-end; only in the admin/back-end. The big limitation is that the admin must define each session and only the admin can see the list of who's registered for sessions. It truly needs to be done such that a user can define a session and manage it. Making the admin have to do the most critical things will keep admins from installing it or keep users from knowing how it works. Also, after registering for an event I don't see it show up in the CB Events tab.

Please enlighten me as to what I am doing wrong. The features I cannot seem to get working are the ones I need. It's got great potential.

Thanks!
Bruce

 CB Integration, April 10, 2006

Newest Users With CB integration enabled, the format of the usernames follows your CB setting, not the setting in this module. In the next revision, I will add something to the tooltip about this.

The fatal error has been fixed, April 10, 2006

Newest Users Thanks for telling me about this, metatech! The function I was referencing resides in one of the CB module files. It didn't give me an error because I also use their "Who's Online" module, which contains the function. I duplicated the function and gave it a new name, allowing my module to work without theirs.

Flexible and Easy to Install, March 25, 2006

This actually works very well. It's highly configurable, although the links can be confusing. Didn't take long to setup. No problems installing. Attractive front.
