Mod_ludo_highlight_search
Neat and great idea, but missing two important features, February 17, 2007 |

This is an excellent little module that simply works and works well. You install and publish the module, which has a long (might be too long for many users) list of possible search sources. You can highlight any piece of text that's not in a wrapper or iframe and click on any of the listed sources and you're taken to a results page for that highlighted word or phrase.
(The mystery to me is why the author didn't use it on his own site listed here since it would work well there.)
For this to work for me, I'd like to see two important features added:
- the ability to determine whether the default behavior for the links would be to use the same page or to open in another window (right now it takes you away from the site and that's not what I want users to do of course!)
- the ability to turn the visibility of the groups of links on or off; right now there are more groups than I would ever use. For example, if I want to save a little veritcal space and I don't want to provide searches for the "Catalogs" group, I really don't have a choice. Even if I delete all of the links and titles and then save, the module simply replaces them with the defaults again.
Unfortunately without those two features, I won't be likely to use this module, even on sites where I think it might be a great asset. But I will keep my eyes on this one, since it shows promise - and the basic idea of it is one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" things the minute you see it.
Nice job, and hope you add those features!

Account Expiration Control - Membership Manager
Great add on with a great future, February 15, 2007 |

First of all the only thing keeping me from giving this the excellent rating it really deserves is because there are still a few bugs to work out with the CB integration, but I am confident that they will be worked out shortly.
This is in no small part due to the dogged determination of the programming team behind it, especially Dave "skOre" Deutsch with whom I have had personal contact. I feel it's important to say this, because I notice that this guy has had to defend himself (quite eloquently I might add) against some unfounded accusations here. I'd like to set the record straight if I may.
I found this program to be quite polished, right down to the way it automatically applies the necessary core hacks (and provides for their reversal) and had it installed and running in no time. When I needed to customize a certain aspect of it for a project, it was extensible enough for me to do so without having to hack into it.
And, BTW, if you are going to be making money with your site by way of a subscription, why would it be out of the question to expect to 'subscribe' to pay for your tool set? Many developers are going this route (charging for enhanced access to the devs and documentation) and I think it's a very good idea if we expect the tools we use to be stable, supported and there for the long haul. If we don't support these developers, we'll lose them to day jobs and paying projects - these guys have to eat, too!!
David has gone out of his way to answer some questions for me during a prototype deadline, and if it's any indication of his subscriber support, count me in! This is a great and extensible tool that I plan on using again and again, and I would seriously suggest anyone interested in paid content or a subscriber community base to look at this closely.
As far as some of the reported 'issues' many of them seem to be the kind of thing you see in improper/non-standard Joomla installs; if AEC didn't expose these issues some other component would have. But it *is* a sort of core enhancement and it does do some core hacking (albeit automated ).
If you're not comfortable with that, then perhaps you shouldn't be running a pay-site on your own - there are plenty of Joomla pros here that can help you out. But if you take the time to read the instructions and quick start guide and ask questions on the globalnerd forums then there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get this running quickly.
Nice job, and I imagine it's only going to get better since the devs seem to take input from the users and run with it. If there was a "VERY Good" rating, I would have given it that. As far as support...I'd give that excellent!

CiviCRM
If you're very lucky this might work..if u can install it!, January 19, 2007 |

Wow, I mean wow, what a disappointment. Based on the top billing and glowing reviews I truly expected a lot more; like a program that actually installed.
21 megs isn't a component, it's a stand alone program. And that's how this should have been packaged. Just like SMF and phpBB, this should have been packaged as a stand alone installation with a BRIDGE. I spent HOURS trying to get this thing to install following every thread I could read with no real results. And because the password on the demo site is not the one listed, I STILL have no idea what it even looks like.
To have a developer suggest that you "consult a professional to install" it (actually in one of the threads!) is counter intuitive - the largest demogrpahic of Joomla is people without extensive programming, PHOP and MySQL knowledge. Furthermore the target audience, non profits, are trying to do everything they can to AVOID such an extra expense. Many aspects, especially front end access, feel like 'hacks' instead of councious efforts to work in the Joomla framework.
I *am* a consultant and I've never had to give up on an install until CiviCRM. I hope they'll separate the app from the bridge and give each the attention they deserve because it seems like if you are lucky enough to get it to work, it's got an excellent feature set.
I'm moving onto trying others and keep hoping they'l work these things out. You shouldn't have to hack your config files and php.ini to get a real Joomla component to work.
