Yahoo/AltaVista/Google Translation Module
 Yahoo/Google translation., March 18, 2008

Yahoo/AltaVista/Google Translation Module Using moving up to Joomla 1.5.1 I could not find a translator that worked. Author was extremely helpful, suggesting the use of Google rather than Yahoo when wrapper class onfront page caused some errors. Worked best with Firefox as asian language did not display in IE7 (maybe a local issue) The best (only?) available online translator for Joomla 1.5.1. As suggested, flags would be nice rather than drop down text but a great start. Keep up the good work
Maybe it's not the best business package but for the language challenged among us, absulutely great.

 Goomla, February 9, 2008

Being language challenged I was hoping to give this excellent idea a perfect score. The site which uses a modified orange smoothie template has connections to a swimming club in Germany and friends in China and this function would enable better connections for all other challenged individuals.
I tried all the languages on my 15 inch portable screen without any problems. I was a little concerned on the bandwidth usage as it creates a completely new page but apart from that it seemed really excellent. How correct, I will have to ask native speakers.
However, I used my partner's HP wide screen portable under IE7 and the arabic screen completely inverted the page right to left. This 17 inch portable PC is running under windows Vista so the problem may specific to this operating system and browser.
Otherwise a fantastic job and a great idea, just not able to give this latest version a perfect score

Page Peel Banner
Page Peel Banner, October 23, 2007

Page Peel Banner Great job, no issues or problems as yet.
Simple to install, easy to adapt looks good.
I'm not sure how I would view this however, if it became common on a lot of pages, it's the rarity value that gives the feel of professionalism, commonplace it may appear tacky.

A choice of position of the folded portion ie bottom left, top left, bottom right would be beneficial for some users and would allow greater flexibility. May also be a nice addition to content pages, if this were possible.

dcsFlashGames HALL OF FAME for your joomla arcade
Hall of Fame, June 7, 2007

dcsFlashGames HALL OF FAME for your joomla arcade Whilst not inherently a game site, I installed this function just to test it out, as it works very well with Community builder. It gives a great view of the members and would appeal to a site aimed at youngsters/teens and provide a competitive forum that would bring them back to play. It wasn't for me as the games were a little extra for the members and not a major facet of the website (being more physically sport based). With community builder and careful selection of games, it would be ideal for making great links and developing customer relations and social interaction with youngsters and the young at heart.
The help from the author, Adam , (a great bloke, who must be a workaholic and a games fanatic) was outstanding, replying instantly to queries over the shoutbox and by e-mail. The home site is a great place to visit, go cat bowling and play other games whilst providing a great demo showing how as a member your scores are instantly displayed on the shoutbox and in the hall of fame. The home site really shows how a community can be developed using games, by providing fun and competition, though whether you would wish your site dominated by these functions is a question you must also ask.

Great games, great bloke Adam. Had problems when evaluating the package with 2 of the modules, did a shoutbox and Adam was there instantly giving advice. (Simply, I'd missed loading the component)
Not a newbie, instant easy install, and some extra requirements needed (I was lucky they were on site already) but you can get there with a wee bit of effort.
Installation was easier than I thought it was going to be. There are a number of upgrades offered on the site and there were a lot of instructions provided and all this information can become a little confusing at first.
The component links really nicely with Community Builder providing a Hall of Fame with photoes and scores. I like it a lot better than the other games programs because of the ratings system, and the access to far more games in a very controllable way. Each game is loaded independently and can be reviewed by the administrator prior to putting them online; ideal when dealing with potential access by a younger group. Great Job Adam, and thank you very much

Community Builder

Community Builder I agree with many of the other users comments. Undoubtably it should be the de facto standard and incorporated into the joomla module from the start as boy!, is it scary to install.
Even practice loading it offline, prior to installing online did not give me much confidence when it came down to it. I had put a number of joomla extensions online over a 6 month period but this was the toughest mentally, though in the end, it wasn't so bad but I did end up posting a none existent problem to the joomopalis forum.
I haven't yet got the club secretary's go ahead to pay for the manual but I think it will be well worth it (and necessary) for the future. The loading of the plugins through the program was, in itself, something new for me. Why is it necessary to have separate plugins for a security capcha and registration feedback? as this combines to make the whole installation process even tougher. I've also installed the birthday module, which I'm stll working on and haven't quite sorted out, the option for it not to be displayed.
As yet I haven't used joomla 1.5, but certainly it would be a more powerful attraction if this was the standard user login.
Club members can now securely enter personal details and admin officials can easily access them. There are so many options, which is great but there are also awkward terms such as synchonise the database and other difficulties that frighten the newbie and may put off potential users. Once in place, the package appears excellent and it is likely, that more developers will create addins but the run up is very hard and I'm still pouring through the free manual and scared the package is going to turn around and bite me for my troubles

Expose Flash Gallery
 Expose, May 14, 2007

Expose Flash Gallery Galleries using joomla can be problematic. Some brilliant work on one version can be spoiled by a new edition that has some bug or other. That's the price users have to pay to get software that is freely available and constantly improving. Expose is one such program and there were minor irritations such as the album manager working offline under XP and not working online using Linux (now fixed, at least on the site I use) but the ability to organise galleries and the quality and speed of the presentation of both photo and video is unsurpassed. The filmstrip simply whizzes through pictures and videos which can then be selected and expanded. Some of the bells and whistles used by other gallery software are missing and it is more suitable for the administrator/manager/author to submit content. Flash must also be downloaded and installed if videos are to be played and flash video files(flv) have to be pre-created from avi,mpg etc prior to uploading. These are considerably smaller than traditional media files and so save a lot of space but a local program is needed to create these .flv files (Under XP I use a freeware package called super.exe that was excellent, if a little complex to understand). The best joomla web solution is to have more than one gallery as although other galleries are better for some things, this gallery certainly adds something to the users visual experience that the others do not. It's just a little bit more work for admins.
(Information relates to joomla 1.00.12, siteground, and includes latest album software download upgrade from slooz)

JCal Pro (event calendar for Joomla)
Jcal Pro Calendar, May 13, 2007

JCal Pro (event calendar for Joomla) Having had Extcal as one of the earlier joomla calendar solutions, which was generally excellent but the latest events section missed displaying some important data.
This solution was tried but an early version had a minor bug with no listed fix however, the latest version has dealt with that and I agree with others that this is now the best joomla calendar program yet available. Indeed, it's strange that a number of other joomla sites haven't yet utilised this feature more.(Especially small clubs and sporting organisations)
Though it can probably be changed,(I'm just not sure how)the monthly set out can be a little confusing because the monthly data is shown on the one page and the monthly titles are shown on the top bar. This can lead to accidentally entering data in the wrong month.
ie titles
1 7 14
and so data for 14th June can be accidentally entered as 14 th July. These titles need to be faded back further and the centre title and colours made more vivid
The great thing, is that it's an upgrade to Extcal and data previously entered can be imported directly into the new Jcal version. Great job, Great addition

AJAX SugBox 1.1
 Ajax Sugbox, April 28, 2007

AJAX SugBox 1.1 The site this module has been installed on, already has a forum, shoutit and blastchat however all these are for registered users and are not anonymous. In a democratically run club, there is a need sometimes for users to confidently make suggestions and put forward ideas without pressures from others, and so this module was added, but only for registered users due to the potential legal problems it could cause. It would be better with a form of captcha to prevent possible spam if it was for unregistered visitors.
It worked well when I tried it, but I'm a little disappointed members have not utilised it as yet. Hopefully they may in time, but they also need to trust it is truly confidential. Of course it may need to come off, if it is abused but it's a risk worth taking for now. Simple, clean and easy to install. Nothing great, nothing bad, but that's its beauty and its purpose.

SWmenuFree
 SWmenuFree, April 27, 2007

SWmenuFree I always try components and modules offline in XP, prior to putting them on a linux site. This function was easy to use offline and it installed online just as well. It is great to put on simple colours or complex photo graphics into the menu. I cut some pieces from a photo, saved them as a png file and simply uploaded and added these to the menu. I was using an extended menu and replaced it with this one with ease. If anything there are too many options but the program is reasonably intuitive. Menus can easily be placed across the page, down the page, left submenus, right submenus in all kinds of colors and formats and even the submenus transparency can be adjusted. Borders can be added, removed or chosen as different colours. I didn't need the manual, just hacked it around offline and when happy used the same parameters online. Altogether a fine piece of software. It was a bit scary when the program came up with some horrid looking message and I thought everything would crash but this disappeared almost immediately and it has worked fine. No issues, but I keep expecting them because it has worked that well and there are so many options that I haven't tried them all yet.
Good Job
