sh404SEF
Just used in 2 virtumart stores, worked in 1., November 9, 2007

sh404SEF Cannot work with virtuemart products that are listed in multiple categories!

Just did my first 2 virtuemart websites and wanted a SEF extension. sh404 worked well for 1 site, but not for the second.

On the second site, products are often in multiple categories. sh404SEF pulls the new URL from the database, but links to the first loaded category.

Example:

Product: Nokia cell phone
Categories: Cell Phones, Electronics

If the Electronics page is visited first, the URL for the product, no matter where it is linked from, will load the product page showing the category of Electronics. But, because 'Cell Phones' is the first category listed in the database, the URL will be

/cell-phones/nokia-cell-phone

and will load the page

Electronics > Nokia Cell Phone

On my product detail pages, I have the category image display, and it's not good to view a category ( "Cell Phones" in this example), then click on a "Cell Phones" product and be taken to a page in a different category ("Electronics") in this example.

So.. It still works, but now I have to create duplicate, triplicate or more listings for every product that is listed in multiple categories.

Works, needs tweaking, July 5, 2007

The basic features work well, without errors, without problems.

Love that you can have unlimited levels of sub-categories.

Front end management only (perfect for my situation).

Only allows 1 image per item.

There are a few glitches that I couldn't find answers for online. Here's the fixes:

• Items don't add, only subtract: I added items, category count was 0. I deleted them, category count went negative. The Noah site says to upgrade, which isn't an option for using the Joomla component:

Fix: /gorum/item.php Line 341, delete the following:

&& ($this->paystatus == 1)

• Huge padding around category description - I'm just using a photo, not a description, don't want the padding.

Fix: Modify template.php, fix on lines 212-216 (that's the cell for the text description). I just removed the:

height='70'

Advanced PayPal Donation Module
Simple Straightforward and Functional, June 28, 2007

I was going to create my own module and figured I'd search to see what's available.

I'm setting up a site for a US non-profit, most important to them is retaining the ability to do one-time and recurring payments.

Installation and configuration took about 90 seconds, and it seems to be working just fine.

At least with US donations, no problems.

Thanks!

DOCman
Way too many steps, May 15, 2007

DOCman The component works, but took way too many steps to get one file registered as a download. I'd say that this could be streamlined so it took 15% of the time to get a file on the site and ready for download.

VFM File Repository
 No Docs, May 15, 2007

VFM File Repository It works for what I need, or I would have given it a 1 star.

No documentation.
No video as mentioned in description.
No working demo.
Website only has 1 forum post where it is stated that component not ready for 1.5.
No instructions.

Administrative options are very minimal, and not self-evident.

Without documentation, all I can tell is that this simply opens up a file browser to a directory of your choice making it "browsable" and the files downloadable by the visitor. Luckily this is all I need, but the programmer really needs a working website with details about anything else this component can do.

Events Calendar
 Disappointed, May 15, 2007

Events Calendar The calendar works. This is great. I didn't run into any errors, just some significant omissions. I provide Joomla! Websites for several non-profits

The greatest disadvantages for me are:
1. Usability - very difficult to explain to average internet users how to administer the calendar.
2. (the bigger one for me personally) - Unable to delete single occurances of repeating events. My palm did this 8 years ago, I created a PHPNuke Calendar 6 years ago that did this, why can't I find a Joomla calendar that does?

If a group has an event every Wednesday, and it is cancelled on week, you cannot delete that week's event. You have to end the repeating event the week before, and start a new copy of the exact same event to start repeating again the week after.

For now, looks like I'm just switching to the embedded google calendar for Joomla.

Pro: Easy easy install and config
Con: Never finishes backup, freezes every time. Really takes away from the usefulness of the com.
