Expose Flash Gallery
Nice Looking, But Disappointing, May 27, 2006 |
I had high hopes for this gallery system. It looks great on the user-side, but there are lots of problems on the Admin side.
First off, the developer doesn't tell you that you need to have special PHP modules (DOMXML and ICONV extensions - you only find out by reading the developer's Forum) installed on your server in order to log into the component from the Administrator's side. Instead of alerting users that the software will not work on the majority of servers out there, the developer's comment is that your server's software is out of date.
Then if you're lucky to overcome that hurdle, SURPRISE - you can't upload photos from the Administrator's side! That's right, the component gets an error when you try to use the Upload Photo function, a very non-descript and says "Cannot communicate with server". I'll tell you right now - the problem is not a CHMOD or permissions problem, it is a code problem.
The developer's reply is that PHP is "tricky" and often doesn't work. Well, then why is he coding components in it?
He recommends people should either FTP their photos to the server and then use the "Add from Bucket" option (which didn't work for me) or to use his PC-based program which will allow you to manage your gallery and upload photos from your PC.
That might be fine for some people here who are building personal sites for myself, but it is not professional enough for someone like me who is building a site for a client (a non-profit organization). I can't install half-baked extension like this on a client site.
Good thing I didn't pay for it. I just wasted several hours of my precious time.
