Easy Gallery
 Great!, January 18, 2008

Easy Gallery I just wanted a simple gallery component for users to be able to upload and view images. This does that very easily.

Pros
- Easy to install. I had no problems although I did read these reviews and noted that I should leave the FTP disabled option to be yes even though I wanted FTP to work.
- Seems to be quite a fast application although that is more a feeling as opposed to using any hard and fast criteria.
- Reading from a Zip archive worked well. I noted it was quite clever. I created a Zip with 4 JPEGs and 1 BMP file (unintentionally) but it only loaded the JPEGS. When I checked the archive I realised the missing file was a BMP.

Cons
- As I can't see any other documentation on this, I am assuming it only handles web graphic formats like JPEGs, GIF and PNG. Most people will only want to use JPEGs I guess.
- The Blue Arrow Up image/option for allowing you to upload doesn't always show up on each page. I noticed it wasn't there when displaying the contents of a directory if I navigated to that directory from the web interface. But if I uploaded from the main directory, the resulting screen was a listing of all images in the uploaded directory with the upload Blue Arrow Up image/option displayed in the top right corner. Probably just a logic issue in the code.
- Documentation costs. Not sure this is the right way of promoting a product but nothing in this world is for free.

Overall though, great stuff!
Cheers
Michelle

VFM File Repository
Simple and straightforward, January 18, 2008

VFM File Repository This appears to be a great tool for a simple document repository.

All I had to do was run up my FTP program, create a master directory for my downloads and then some sub-directories under that related to the types of document for downloads. Eg: downloads/Minutes, downloads/Templates, etc. I dragged a few files into those directories as a test. I then went into the component from Joomla's backed administration making sure that I had a nice title for the Component Heading, put /downloads at the end of the default Root download folder, changed the default permission to View and I disabled the Rating because I don't want to use that. Then I linked it to my usermenu, ran up my frontend website, logged in as a user and selected the menu item. Straight away, I could see the download directories nicely formatted to my site template and hyperlinked automatically to the document directories. I clicked into one with a document and it was easy to see the document/s with a file size automatically tagged. Downloading was a breeze. Voila! How simple is that?

Pros
- Installed in a breeze
- Took about 15 seconds to set up the parameters I wanted (and about a minute behind-the-scenes setting up the directories and dragging some documents using my FTP software)
- A few more seconds saw me linking a menu item to the right component
- Seemed to handle my template style easily
- A strength is its automatic detection of download directories and files within those. Assuming you name the directories and the files with meaningful names, uploading files is as simple as FTP'ing them from your computer.
- It works!

Cons
- Can't see any yet although perhaps lack of documentation.
- Basic but perfect if that's all you want

Thanks!

JVTempo Easy Weather 1.1
 Great product, May 2, 2007

JVTempo Easy Weather 1.1 Upsides

This is a neat weather module as it provides basic information (city/town, weather icon/graphic and temperature) that is then clickable and opens MSN's site with more detailed information. You have the option of celcius or fahrenheit. You can also include more than one city/town. And lastly, it is great for International weather and not just the US. I have it working nicely for capital cities of Australia.

Downsides

* As MSN's URL is a necessary constant in the code, if MSN change their structure, the software breaks. Solution is to either figure out how to fix it yourself or email support. This has just happened and the programmer/s came back within days with a solution.
* Information is basic but more detailed information is available by clicking through to the external site.
