Integration Joomla Phpbb2 by Przemo 1.0 RC4
 Polish Only, April 30, 2006
4 of 4 people find this review helpful:

Integration Joomla Phpbb2 by Przemo 1.0 RC4 Unfortunately the above description doesn't say that this is a Polish language only version (even if the bridge beta does contain some English). For the bridge to work, you need to download a modified phpBB version (v1.12.5 by przemo located on http://www.przemo.org/phpBB2/index.php). This modified phpBB version is POLISH-ONLY, so this bridge isn't much use for non-polish language peple.

This caveat should be identified within the description above.

It's really unfortunate actually, as I'm looking to install (the best) forum software around (phpBB2) but without bridge integration into Joomla, that makes it quite hard.

JoomTunes - Apple iTunes Affiliate Kit
Caching problem resolved, April 27, 2006

JoomTunes - Apple iTunes Affiliate Kit I wrote previously about "caching" facilities to be provided by this module. This module actually has the facility but it's not implemented correctly.

After looking at the code, the ./modules/joomtunes/rss_cache.inc file looks for (and if non-existant) creates a "joomtunes/cache" directory, but it attempts to do this directly from the web root of the server (ie. to create ./joometunes/cache from your web root).

People that are security concience don't allow the webserver to write to webroot (deny all and allow only what's necessary) which is why this cache directory wasn't being created and populated in my setup.

Strictly speaking, this module should be caching its items either in the Joomla cache directory (./cache of web root which already has 777 permission), or generating it's cache directory from it's own ./modules/joomtunes/cache directory tree (so that removing the module cleans up after itself).

So to cut a long story short, to make the caching component work I needed to create this directory off my web root:

./joomtunes/cache

and assign it write privilege for the webserver.

I have emailed Gavin Smith above with this and hope that he'll implement some fixes, including cleanly removing its cache directory and tree if someone wanted to remove the module cleanly.

Thanks.

Michael.

JoomTunes - Apple iTunes Affiliate Kit
Very nice module but..., April 27, 2006

JoomTunes - Apple iTunes Affiliate Kit This is an excellent affiliate module but seems to have one major drawback, out of the 35 or so Genre's of music available to select from, you can only select 1 to display. To select anymore you have to make multiple copies of the module with each selecting the Genre to display to your visitors.

A very time consuming process to setup exactly the way you want.

It would be much better if it just displayed on a page all the different genre's available, and have the user select what genre they're interested in, which would then make the link to iTunes to get the "lastest" or "most popular" etc. Basically, it would be much better to have the list of items available on the site instead of just small subsections of it.

The other thing which could use updating is when the module can't talk to iTunes, it just produces an error saying bad or broken connection. It would be much better if it cached it's previous "itunes visit" to still display something for the visitor.

For a first release it's really an excellent module (thankyou), but I would hope that as it matures it could address the things above.

Invite a Friend Component Beta 2.0
 Nice..., April 21, 2006

This is a very nice module and does exactly what it's supposed to do, but it would be good if it also had the ability to "re-send invites", and then log those re-sends also.
