JACLPlus
Fed up - Look elsewhere?, August 31, 2006
9 of 10 people find this review helpful:

Having run a site for nearly a year using this component I just like to say that it's like playing cat and mouse with all the updates.

Also if you have components like Community Builder or virtuemart installed, then it gets hard to keep up with the updates to keep these functional and secure.

Byostech usually release a patch for JACL everytime Joomla releases an update. (youll find that you can't log into your backend if you don't update JACLplus). The downside of this that byostech only release the patches to the general public around about 15 days after they release it for their "Fee paying Charted Members".

This means if you wait to upgrade your Joomla and JACLplus at the same time to ensure continuity and security and you are not "Fee paying Charted Member", then you are in serious danger of exposing your site to being hacked.

Yes, I know the answer is Pay up I just feel that Byostech are sitting on the fence in terms of Opensource Ideology. either make JACLplus a commercial product and support it as such or make it truely opensource and stop hiding behind the facade of "Fee Paying Chartered Membership".

It's just one way of generating an income and then not offering the technical support.

My recommendation is to look elsewhere for an alternative product, or better still Joomla should have true ACL support in release 1.5. Please Please!!!!!!
