Jomres v3 Booking Management System
Overall very good, but I couldn't use it., March 15, 2008

Jomres v3 Booking Management System Jomres offers a 15-day trial of the software. I suggest you download and install the trial, and then COMPLETELY set it up to work w/your hotel(s). This is the only way you're going to discover if jomres is right for you.

After a thorough evaluation of jomres we realized we couldn't use it. The way it displays weekend rates just doesn't work well.

The system DOES allow us to enter unique rates for each day. But when a visitor enters the dates of their stay, only the rooms are listed, no rates. You have to select each room type individually to see the rate. So the visitor has to select a room type to see the rate, deselect the room, and then select the next room type to see the rate, then deselect the room, etc. This is a silly process for trying to just get a rate. After entering a date for my stay, all available room types AND THE RATES should appear on a single page so the guest can select and book a room. Jomres apparently cannot do that.

Additionally, if you're a U.S.-based hotel, you're going to find yourself spending much time in the language file changing terms. For example, what we in the USA call 'rates', jomres calls 'tariffs'. But that's simple.

Letterman Newsletter Component
Works great, but project does seem dead., February 14, 2008

Letterman Newsletter Component Does everything I need it to do: allows subscribers to enter their name and e-mail online. They receive a subscription confirmation e-mail w/a link they must click to activate. I can then create and save multiple newsletters (whose content can contain the subscriber's name), and I send those I want to send. I can also choose to publish the newsletter to my site so people can see past newsletters.

However, code hasn't been updated in a while. Not sure if that means the code is perfect or if the developer has quit this project.

Eventing
Wonderfully Simply and Functional, February 14, 2008

After evaluating two other products, one that only allowed adding events from the frontend, and another that charged a 'delivery fee*', I choose this one. There's no calendar, but I don't need one. I just need to list events that automatically disappear after they have ended. This is it.

*NOTE: I don't mind paying for software. I have paid plenty. But call it what it is.

Mosets Tree
Did More Than I Needed It To Do., November 18, 2007

Mosets Tree I bought this item ($119) plus ZCS (ZipCodeShop) ($99) and imported a list of 30,000 nationwide service providers. Now when people go to my site, they can enter their ZIP code and see list of nearby service providers. The visitor can click on a service providers link and see additional content (which I control) such as rating and reviews, a Google map, address & phone, images, logos, etc. Some providers have their own website so I provide a link to their site from my directory. I can tag certain providers as "Featured" which puts them at the top of the search results page in its own hi-lighted box. Service providers can be granted access to maintain and update their own listing in my directory. This is done using the native joomla authentication system. The service provider simply registers and I grant him ownership of a particular listing. I also force visitors to register before reviewing or rating a service provider. But the truth is, I only bought this item because ZCS required it and I needed the ZIP-code based search. For my next directory project I will at least evaluate SOBI2 as it's free (sans a small donation). But I wouldn't feel bad about paying $119 for MOSETS Tree again if I need to. It is ROBUST in every sense of the word.

FireBoard Forum
Worked Great, until I upgraded., October 18, 2007
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

FireBoard Forum I've been running v1.0.0 for a while, then I tried to upgrade to v1.0.3 to fix some minor issues. The upgrade process was totally ridiculous (see the instructions and you'll know what I mean) so I decided to uninstall and re-install. The forum hasn't worked correctly since. I must admit that v1 was nice, but the upgrade process is totally unacceptable. I'm not one to spend time trying to get something to work if other options exist, so I'll go back to PHPBB since I don't require full joomla integration anyway. But the makers of Fireboard need to make the upgrade process more simple or others, like me, will defect.
