I have been using Joomla for a couple of years now, and I have experienced lots of issues and problems with the various SEF components. Duplicated sef links, and many other issues. Until recently I learned to live with the problems and have been using Nusef (open-sef). Recently I have gotten fed up with thing like having a dozen differen sef links for the same page. While it was the best in its day, I have found one that so far (fingers crossed) is closer to bug free than any SEF component I have used. I love the JoomSEF component, and have settled on this patched version to prevent spamming of ad (the default version has ads).
I've now installed it on 3 of my sites and I don't have a singe duplicate link! I also love the fact that if I decide to change an sef link, the component can automatically build a table with 301 redirects so Google doesn't find broken links. The component is fast, and has not caused any problems with the layout of modules on my sites (Some of the SEF's did: the modules would not show up on pages they were supposed to be on... weird).
The only issue I've had with JoomSEF - patched version was really a lack of my own understanding. On one site I spent two hours changing the SEF links. The changes wouldn't show up on the live pages though (even after cleaning the Joomla cache, the browsers cache, etc.). It turns out I had set the option for the Component to cache up to 1000 urls (to speed up the pages changes) and it was serving the cached urls. Once I turned that off, it immediately served the new SEF URL's. You can then turn on the cache after the changes of course).
This component is awesome!
