Joomla BibTeX
Good, but more features would be nice, August 5, 2007

Joomla BibTeX I find myself constantly footnoting articles that I write and was looking for a database resource where I could list all of the books that I own and use as reference. This product fits the bill.

However, there are some features that could be tweaked to fit my needs. But then again, I am picky.

1. Style Guide - I generally use Turabian as my style guide for bibliographical information, but would be willing to switch to the Chicago Style Guide if that were the option used by the software. Apparently, the software uses neither. It would be nice to have something along those lines included.

2. Ability to modify field names. As I do not generally use papers as my sources, but rather encyclopedic volumes and individual reference books, I have a different scope of information that I would like to reference such as ISBN number and publisher city to properly format those references. I can re-task some of the fields that I do not have a need for to store this information, but it would be nice to easily rename the fields.

3. Ability to provide a thumbnail. I originally looked at this software and instead opted to use VirtueCart for my library because it provided me the ability to have a thumbnail of the material I was referencing. But VirtueCart does not provide the indexing capability and number of fields that a bibliographic component would. So I am in the process of switching back to Joomla BibTeX.

Overall, it is a great product and allows you to keep a readily accessible index. It is a good start and far better than anything I have the power to develop. I can't wait to see the product grow into my needs a bit more.
