TMEdit
Nice, but wasn't for us, November 26, 2008

TMEdit First let me say that this plugin was easy to install and produced a very nice editor with a good array of options. It does, however, have a security feature that we didn't expect: when we tried to paste text using Firefox we were greeted with a security warning and offered instructions to modify our browser's configuration files to allow access to our local clipboard. It's a thoughtful feature, but we do not believe that most of our users would be willing to do that and we would end up getting their submissions by email or in forum posts. This is by no means a "fault" of the editor plugin, but it is a security feature it to be aware of and consider. It would be nice if it could be a switchable option from the admin backend plugin configuration panel.

JEvents Plugin for ARTIO JoomSEF
 Thank you, October 29, 2008

This plugin is the final icing-on-the-cake for my Jevents/JoomSEF powered events calendar site. When activated, it creates URL's such as {yoursite}/{jevents_menu_item_name}/{event_category}/{date}/{event_title} with no need for visible item ID or any other extraneous info: just clean URL's for your calendar items. And its configuration - how hard does uploading the plugin and enabling it sound? Piece of cake. If I were to request anything else be included out-of-the-box it would probably be more date format options but it would be hard to make this plugin much better.

Agora
 I like it, October 20, 2008

Agora THE GOOD: This is the first forum I've found that works out-of-the-box "1.5 Native" with no bridges and no hacked or patched files to replace. It's got lots of goodies and a massive pile of options, even a Google user map (get an API key from Google, it's free as in beer). It's even set up to take templates and plugins of its own. What more to ask?

THE - UH WELL - LESS GOOD: It took me some extra sips of coffee to figure out how to get in. No backend (just credits). Be sure to (1) Create a menu item to the Forum, (2) Login to frontend as "admin", (3) Navigate to the Forum, and finally (4) the sacred Admin button awaits you. Perhaps I didn't look in the right place, but nothing told me to expect this little hoop to jump through. No big deal, just thought I'd put it out there.

Overall this Forum is still excellent and is definately a keeper! Way to go developers!!

swMenuMaker
Why didn't I use this in the first place?, September 17, 2008

swMenuMaker I fought and fought and fought with many nice looking J!1.5 templates to get Suckerfish menus to work to no avail. Instead of "shopping around" for just the right template or compromising the template you like for an effect you want, or hacking the CSS or HTML into the wee hours of the morning just download this component, take five minutes to customize it to your heart's content ... borders, colors, drop-down timing and more ... then get on with your real work.

Why didn't I just start out using this in the first place?

Component listing mudule
 Ok, I'm a believer, September 10, 2008

Component listing mudule I have to admit, when I first read the description of this module I thought to myself, "You've got to be kidding. Is the component dropdown really that hard?"

But thanks to the previous glowing review I decided to give it a try. It's actually pretty cool and it really does make some tasks a little less tedious. Well done!

Mobile Entertainment
 Mobile Money, September 9, 2008

Mobile Entertainment The Mobile Money service is apparently not available in the United States or Canada. Looks like a nice and pretty extension with a huge variety of products but very few of my site's visitors will be able to purchase them from their locations. Had I known this I would not have installed it nor gone through the trouble of signing up as a Mobile Money affiliate.

JoomlaPack - AJAX powered backup and restore
As easy as it says? Yes! No, really, it is!, September 8, 2008

From the time I downloaded this component to making my first backup was about five minutes. The only thing else I'd like to see, if one were to twist my arm and ask me that, is the option to backup to an external server ("secure" FTP?). Otherwise, great component. Five stars all the way.

RegistrationBlocker
Not working with CB 1.1 and Joomla! 1.0.13 for me, December 5, 2007

I don't know what I am doing wrong, but this mambot is not blocking anything in tests or in real world use. I set it up according to the instructions given and could still purposely register usernames I placed on its ban list. I also placed email TLD's *.cn and *.ru on its ban list since that is where most spammers are registering their servers and emails these days, and still I get 2-3 spam registrations a week from those. I investigated possible conflict with various SEF programs I've tried -- by disabling and uninstalling them -- to no avail.

All of the positive reviews tell me this is a good system that works, but not for me. Perhaps there is something on my server that is not enabled. I just don't know.

sh404SEF
 Gallery2, November 30, 2007

sh404SEF Wow ... I actually got this system to work with Gallery 2. But what I did was upload sef_ext.php and then turn off SEF for that component. I know, it sounds like sh404SEF isn't really doing anything at that point -- it's allowing G2 to do its own SEF without messing it up -- something JoomSEF didn't allow. And no advertising for tire stores in third world countries in my Meta tags, either. Woohoo! Thanks, sh404SEF.

Events Calendar
Exactly what I've been looking for, November 26, 2007
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

Events Calendar This is the ideal calendar for PowwowTime.com. I also did some code mods to add additional fields, generate a Google Map and AccuWeather forecast for each event. Once I clean up my code additions a little, I'll submit my version back to Joomlacode as a derivative or hack in case anyone wants to add these features.

AdsManager: Classified Ads
Easy to use, November 26, 2007

AdsManager: Classified Ads I found this component very easy to install and configure. You can use a simple, single layer category scheme and run a "Craigslist"-like site or you can create several layers of categories and subcategories. Once you get the hang of things, this is a very powerful classified ads system that will accept a fair amount of customization.

The only glitch I could find is its inability to upload PNG files via the new ad submissions form. I suppose there's a fix, but copped out and simply changed the appropriate language file entry accordingly, with JPG and GIF uploads being good enough for me.

joomlaXplorer
How did I ever run a site without it?, November 22, 2007
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

joomlaXplorer Considering what Joomla! normally does to file ownership once it's up and running, editing and updating files can be a real chore on some configurations. joomlaXplorer to the rescue! This is by far one of the best downloads I've found, it makes my job so much easier, all I can say is "Wow"!
