MMS Blog
Fantastic with parts begging for more...., June 5, 2008
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

First of all, this is a fantastic little component.

Runs straight out of the box, and works like it should. It's quite fun to send random emails from your cellphone, and check later to see it's sitting there on the website for the world to see.

However, although it does this very well, this is all it does.

As per the requests on the support forum, the big demand now is that this integrates a little closer with Joomla, in that once MMS Blog receives content, it's converted into Joomla content, therefore making it compatible with all things Joomla - including comments for blog entries and editing from front-end login, among other things.

Once this is implemented this will become an indispensable component for Joomla. As it stands, it's a robust piece of software.

Core Design Login Module
 Great log-in module, June 4, 2008

Core Design Login Module Needs to be installed with an additional plug-in that will run Highslide JS. In itself this isn't a problem, however the documentation was a little lacking on how to properly setup everything. Took about 15 minutes of fiddling around but managed to get it working ok, and it looks great on my site.

Works well, now just need to tweak things.

ALFcontact
Looking for a basic contact form that just works? This is it., May 24, 2008

This is a great little component. Installs straight out of the box, and does what it's suppose to. Incredibly simple - if you are looking for some complex "contact us" type of form, you are looking at the wrong one.

If, however, all your looking for is a simple yet effective way of letting your site visitors contact you, or various departments/sections of your company/organization/group, then this is the perfect one for you. I would consider this the next step up from the form included originally with Joomla.

Absolutely no complaints from a happy user.

Tag Clouds
 Brilliant, July 21, 2007

Tag Clouds This is a fantastic little module. Like the previous reviewers have stated, this works STRAIGHT out of the box, first time. My only "adjustment" was to exclude a couple more words, and that is easily done in the Module Manager.

I haven't really looked into it, but the module interpreted some special marks in the text into "RSQUO", "RDQUO" and "LDQUO" respectively. As the special marks appeared often, these where the biggest links in the tag cloud. I've added them to the exclusion list for now until I figure out why it interpreted as it did. I suspect it's actually the fault of the WYSIWYG Editor, and not this program.

Any any regard, a fantastic piece of software and will be a great addition to any site. Recommended.

Joom!Fish - multilingual content manager
All you need, July 18, 2007
0 of 2 people find this review helpful:

Joom!Fish - multilingual content manager Joom!Fish is your safest bet when it comes to handling multiple languages on your site. From the ability to change your menus and content on the fly into numerous languages will make your site incredibly professional and user friendly.

Be forwarned, this is NOT an auto translator. Look elsewhere for that. Joom!Fish simply gives you the support needed to have other language equivalents of every aspect of your site. I have used this successfully on a site which is running English and Japanese concurrently, with the Japanese translations done by a professional translator.

Unlike other (poor) reviews I have not had any issues whatsoever with this component, and I'm not a programmer/elite user. It took me about 5 minutes to install and get up and running, and haven't had any issues with it so far. Admittedly the site I am currently using it on is not an intense site - it's simply a brochure site with minimal content and no other components installed.

Treat your users and site visitors with respect. Unless you want to completely insult them, their language and their culture, don't use auto-translators. I'm a trilingual speaker and it's insulting to my intelligence visiting sites that have been auto translated.

DFContact with Captcha-Support
 Simple, effective, May 31, 2007

DFContact with Captcha-Support This is a very simple yet effective contact form.

It's not hugely customizable - for example it doesn't seem to follow the template CSS, so you are virtually stuck with what what you've got. Obviously you could edit the code if necessary, but if you aren't a programmer or can't be bothered, then forget about changing the way this appears.

Having said that, it works perfectly straight out of the box. I had it running on my site in under 2 minutes. I regard it as a step up from the contact form that comes with Joomla. Not a very large step-up, but just a further step which gives you a few more options for your contact details. Plus the captcha thing sounds handy......if I can be bothered installing it next.....

moseasymedia 2.0.1
 Great!, May 30, 2007
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

moseasymedia 2.0.1 This is as easy as it sounds. Install, follow the guidelines, and you are away. Very nice little plug-in for those of us that want to stream FLV video on our sites.

Just a few helpful pointers for other newbies:

- Make sure the mambot is published....
- Relative URLs didn't work for me, so if you don't see anything initially, this might be the case. I had to type in the absolute URL of the FLV player (ie http://www.mysite.com/mambots/content/playerflv/flvplayer.swf) under the mambot options, and just to be sure, I typed in the absolute URL in the content where I wanted the video to show up as well (ie {moseasymedia media=http://www.mysite.com/images/video/fryer01.flv}).

With those 2 bits of troubleshooting outta the way, I'm able to stream video over the net. Very nice, simple to use and great looking plug-in. Highly recommended.

JB Login
 Opps, March 10, 2007
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

JB Login I registered, downloaded, uploaded and followed all the instructions, including altering my template's "template_css.css" file. All to no avail, this module refused to show itself on my page.

This is an "as-is" review. I didn't have the time to try and problem solve this issue, so it could very well work. However it didn't work "straight out of the box" for this reviewer. Perhaps the developer would care to suggest solutions.

astatsPRO
Finally a decent stats component!, August 16, 2006
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

astatsPRO You may or may not have seen my previous reviews on BSQ stats. Since then I have had numerous problems with the component, on various sites that I run, and have completely uninstalled it. I also tried running JoomlaStats but after a couple of weeks the database bloated so quickly it was just completely unusable. Plus it was a little too "fiddly" for my liking, for example you can display referrers to your site, but it can only display on a daily basis, you can't specify periods - for example a whole month or week.

Along comes astatsPRO, and I think I've finally found a stats component that will do EXACTLY what I need. I currently run a number of adult sites, and as a "one man show" I definately cannot afford to waste time with trying to make something work when it should in the first place. However I do need a stats programe to guage where my traffic is coming from and adjust my marketing campaign accordingly.

astatsPRO installed easily, reminded me I needed to install the module along with the component, and I was ready to go. Not even a hint of editing the config.php file, which is refreshing.

As others have mentioned previously there is the *slight* hassle of having to re-login to access the stats, but as long as you have cookies enabled this should only be a one-off occurance. English is not the component creators native language so be sure to read carefully all instructions provided to make sure you understand what is required.

All in all a very well designed and implemented stats component. Many thanks to the developer for this.

BSQ Sitestats
Differences between Beta and Alpha releases, July 14, 2006
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

Regarding my earlier review (theres no way of editing it) I would like to clarify a few points.

I installed an "older" BSQ Sitestats version 1.8.0 which is classed as "stable" under the downloads page. This works straight off the bat, so if you are interested in something simple that will work straight away, this is for you.

Newer versions 2.0 and 2.1 are still in beta phase so DO have little quirks, and unfortunately you also need to install a further component that Brent and Michael created - Joomlalib. This looks promising, but it can get confusing as to get graphics (pie chart or graph etc) working you'll need to install a FURTHER module for Joomlalib. Unfortunately I was unable to get this to work, and on a couple of my sites that I tried to install it on it completely didn't work. I'm not sure why, but as I said, unless you are willing to work at it, I'd recommend sticking with the stable releases in the meantime.

In summary, version 1.8 is very stable and does the job. Newer versions are more powerful with more features, but require a little bit more work to get them to work etc etc.

BSQ Sitestats
 Great component, July 12, 2006
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

I must confess I have not tried any other stats components, but as far as I'm aware BSQ is pretty much the only one you'll need. Very straight-forward to install and get running, just install the component and whichever modules you want. You can of course choose which modules you publish and to what level.

I was looking for an extension that would show "top domain referrer", and this fits the bill perfectly.

I had to do a couple of modifications to the programming and such, and Brent was VERY quick to reply to questions on the support forum, so support is really good as well, which makes this a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED component to install.

JCE
 Looking good, June 30, 2006

JCE I haven't had too much opportunity to play around with this yet, but it looks very powerful.

Actually the main reason for writing this review was to correct the guy before me, who said that this component was no longer free. That is incorrect. The component itself is still free, however support for users is now on a subscription basis, due to the developers high cost of bandwidth, which seems fair enough to me.

The support for streaming video plus the image manager makes this a HUGE step up from TinyMCE editor. Highly recommended.

Regarding installation issues - it took me a while to get Joomla to recognise JCE as my new editor of preference. Strangely enough after I'd set it as default in global preferences, unpublished both standard editors and checked that configuration.php noted that the editor was indeed JCE, Joomla was still showing TinyMCE (even though I'd unpublished it). The only resolution was to individually go into user menu, select myself, and set default editor that way. I don't believe this is a bug on JCE's part, but rather Joomla.

Mod HTML - Google Adsense Module
The simple things always work the best, June 29, 2006
1 of 1 people find this review helpful:

This is an incredibly handy module for anyone's site, particularly if you are trying to insert Google's Adsense or some other similar Javascript or HTML code and want it appropriately placed.

So incredibly simple and tiny (it's about 2k), this Godsend of a module works straight out of the box, leaving developers and website builders alike able to deal with the real issues at hand.

Highly recommended.

VERY VERY GOOD, June 20, 2006

This is a GREAT component. It automatically installs the mambot side of things and handles almost everything for you.

I had a couple of jiggles when first installing it, so make sure you visit their website and read properly the sections titled "Missing Galleries" and "Publishing Galleries", otherwise just make sure when you select the options you complete EVERYTHING as default leaves some sections empty (and it won't work if they are left blank).

The beautiful thing about this component is that its an insert into actual content, which for starters means you can put in a mini gallery right in the middle of your content. However better than this is the fact that you can have "time release" or specific publishing dates for your images/galleries. This is a must have if you run a visual/picture based website which requires constant feed of new content, but you can't be doing it daily.

Thanks to this little plug-in I'll be able to setup my website with a lot of "future" galleries (and do all the hard work now), and then sit back and watch it "update itself" for the next couple of months.

LinX - Reciprocal link exchange component (SEO)
 Has potential, June 20, 2006

LinX - Reciprocal link exchange component (SEO) This component has some good potential, I like the feature that it can check for you to make sure link exchange partners are still linking back to you etc.

However at this stage it's still in its early stages and therefore has a few bugs that need to be ironed out. The one I've come across will come up with an error if you try to insert a link for a site which is ALREADY linking back to your site.

There appears to be good support in the forums though, I'm looking forward to the kinks being fixed and new extra goodies put in!
