Phil Taylor's Phil-A-Form for Joomla 1.0.x
Tried the rest - This is the Best, April 22, 2008

Phil Taylor's Phil-A-Form for Joomla 1.0.x I had been struggling with trying to decide which form component to use for my client's site. The requirements were pretty straight forward - they wanted a form creation tool that would be easy enough for non-tech types to use, and it had to have the ability to export the data for use outside of the site in spreadsheets and such.

I tested virtually every free component and a few of the commercial ones as well. While I did find one other component that had a nice drag and drop interface that would be easy to use, the way that it stored the data in the database was (sorry) a joke. All of the field data for the entire form was crammed into one cell and separated with semicolons. When you start creating multiple forms on the site this would turn into a complete nightmare for anyone who would want to use the data elsewhere.

With Phil-A-Form, each new form created gets its' own database table, with real fields and everything. P-A-F export from the database and subsequent import into a spreadsheet is silky smooth. Bravo.

The end user need only learn the concepts behind the component to be able to start using it. Two for two.

I also found an added bonus with this component that I wasn't expecting. It checks for issues within the site. I'm relatively new to php and know enough to at least create a dynamic template that changes depending on module position usage. P-A-F identified a number of issues within my templates index.php file. It found two syntax problems which I had no idea about as the site seemed to function fine with the errors in place. It also found two undefined variables in my template which would only occur under certain circumstances.

This is one component that is well worth the money. I'm just kicking myself for not trying it first. I could have saved myself hours and hours of time.

Thanks Phil!!
Keep up the great work.
