Latest News by Publish Date
 AWESOME!, January 2, 2008

Latest News by Publish Date Exactly what we've needed for ages - should be part of the core!

This is GREAT to emulate calendars of content etc, without repeating the dates...

Ideal for school calendars, gig listings etc.

I LOVE that you can turn off times if you like, and it's SO EASY to configure - you'll ahve this up and running in about one minute!

Thank you - I hope we see more and more essential extensions, rather than just mad plugins with no useful real-world application!

Extended Menu
Did exactly what I needed!, December 7, 2007

Well, it let me split my menus, and in doing so manage my entire site through just mainmenu, which is a joy!

Now, the menu on the left of my site (Extended Menu, showing mainmenu) shows up the children of the parent link at the top of the site (regular Joomla mainmenu).

You just set it to use split menus, and start at child level 1, not go further than level 1, and only show the children of a particular parent (works by name, and is case sensitive, so remember that if you change the parent menu item names!).

I do then have to go into modules and tell it to only show each Ext Menu on the corresponding page - this is a pain if you are often adding content.

I would LOVE a menu system that automatically picked up the children to show in a split menu depending on which parent item was chosen on another menu... possible? Might be with this if I look hard enough!

Thanks for the hard work!

GCalendar
Blimey - took me all afternoon!, October 4, 2007

GCalendar Well, it works, eventually!

My first goof was to put an apostrophe in the title of the calendar within the component - this will NOT work with apostrophes in the calendar name!

Once I'd found the right HTML (Google Calendar was having a slow moment, so I had to figure it out manually), and put it all in I eventually got the calendar showing up.

A limitation of Google Calendar (not the component) is that it will only show a month's events in agenda view by default - a pain if you are trying to show school term dates for example - you want everything showing up!

Clicking an event in this opens a new window to give you more info, direct inside Google Calendar - a bit clunky IMHO.

I ended up resorting to using this component, linking on the menu to a blank static content item, and publishing the upcoming GCalendar events module in the inset position. The problem with the module is horrible date formatting (and an overly techy process of changing it), and the date being on a separate line form the event name (might look OK when I have some more events in there though).

Overall, it works, but don't expect to have it perfect in 5 minutes!

MosLookup
 Hmmmpf, September 26, 2007

MosLookup There is a module associated with this component now, but there is only one webserver's details supplied with the component, nad it's just too limited. I'm going to go find a thirdparty solution I can just embed in a wrapper instead.

AJAX Header Rotator for flash-like image rotation!
Great module for smooth changing modules, September 20, 2007

AJAX Header Rotator for flash-like image rotation! Wow! Easy to install, customise etc. No more relying on custom hard code, flash, etc - works and blends smoothly in all the browsers I've tried!

One thing I noticed is that the blend colour (between images) is picked up from the colour of the table cell it sits in (e.g. for black images, one a white table, you get a flash of white between images) - to fix, just change the background of the table cell to a suitable neutral colour, appropriate to your selection of images. Perhaps adding a fade colour choose would be a good improvement.

Tree Manager - Cat. /Sect. /Content from FRONTEND WOW

I have just taken a look through the demo site, and what this does is FANTASTIC!

A prefect add-on for a site that will be used by newbies to categories etc!

Thanks!

JoomlaTinyFCK (JTF)
 It's just too simple, August 6, 2007

JoomlaTinyFCK (JTF) I'm trying this out on an existing site, and it's not able to upload to anywhere except the folder: www.domain.com/images/stories/Image
Pretty poor show really - only good if you use this right form the moment you start your Joomla site, or you won't be able to access your old images.

Just too simple, sorry.

Heavenly Search
Works nicely... Looking forward to more options..., July 27, 2007

Heavenly Search This is nice - support for image and text buttons etc is a godsend, and I'm looking forward to the new version with control over the text box itself...

Would be great to have built in option for more Web 2.0-ey style search boxes, and possibly supply it with a few nice buttons as standard for us to choose from.

Recommended over the standard search box, but needs more functionality.

Table manager
Fantastic - did exactly what I needed!, June 13, 2007

Table manager Well, this has saved me LOTS of costly external development - I have it displaying lists of companies sponsoring various events on my site. I can update which events a company sponsors in one place and know they will be up to date in the article.
TIP - make sure you think about your columns and rows - columns need to be the categories of info, and the rows need to be the individual entries in the database. In my example, I used columns as "company name" and then a column for each event, and the rows were each separate companies. By putting a 1 as true for the events companies sponsored, I could filter the displayed results by whichever event = 1. You can turn off the various columns in the view so that you end up only displaying the info you require.
ANOTHER TIP - if you don't want the description of the view to appear, just put a space (putting nothing will result in the view's name showing up).
Great work - I'd like to know if it can be used to display info from other database tables on the server though, such as those generated by Joomla or Phil-A-Form etc.???

Latest News with Date
Looks OK, but date is wrong!, April 16, 2007

Latest News with Date Well, it displays the wrong date - backwards by one day!
FYI, if you want to show them in reverse order, change the three occurrences of ASC in the php file to DESC or vice versa...
If the developer can fix the date issue then this is a winner.
FYI, I applied a class suffix nad then styled this - it's a bit clunky in its default layout...
