best tags component out there period. Quick support turnaround. Good job Phil!
Installed Joomla Tags and for whatever reason it didn't work. Emailed their tec support and had a response in 10 minutes with an sql script to run attached. 2 minutes later and all working fine. Now that's what I call technical support!

So this would be a great extension if only it used a standard Ajax framework and not the bespoke framework.

If there is one thing we have discovered it is that whenever there is a problem of whitescreens or weird behaviour on our joomla sites - it comes down to the tags and their javascript.

If you are not going to do much with your site, all well and good. if you are, then expect to resource to manage JS problems.

What should Phil do: use a standard framewokr such as JQuery or some such.
Owner's reply

Maybe you should check your facts before leaving a factually incorrect review :-)

our applications DO USE the standard JQuery javascript framework exclusively.

"Whitescreens" are NEVER javascript problems, they are PHP Errors that are not displayed because your server has display_errors=Off in your PHP configuration, we talk about this here:

http://blog.phil-taylor.com/2009/01/12/a-blank-white-page-is-still-an-error-page/

We know of no unresolved javascript errors with this application...

As a fairly new Joomla user, I looked around and tried to pick carefully for a tags extension. I choose Phil Taylor's product because of reviews here, and his site and clearly he knows what he is talking about. I needed help because of my particular webhost's settings and Phil responded quickly and effectively to get that fixed. I've had a couple of more questions and he has answered them quickly even though (as I later learned from his blog) he'd actually been traveling on work most of that time. This has been easy to change templates, and it adds a nice extra touch to my site that sets it apart from my competition. I would like to have a bit more documentation showing how to exploit this feature to its most on my site, but I know I'll figure that out more as I go along. I'm happy to report this extension gave me tags capabilities that look and work great and I'm very happy.
Of course he won't tell you this before you purchase Joomla Tags, only after when it's too late. After several emails back and forth I was told there is no timeframe for a release that will work install with JoomFish already installed.

So if you need to use JoomFish don't bother with this extension, if you don't then it sounds like a good product
Owner's reply

Actually you are wrong. And we clearly communicated this fact in our blog over several months now. http://blog.phil-taylor.com/2008/12/31/joomfish-20-stable-we-will-get-there/

You can use Joomla Tags with Joom!Fish installed, however there is no integration with JoomFish for translations.

I was impressed with the reviews I read here. I'm scratching my head now. Here's my experience:

1. Installed the component
2. Site immediately became very very slow, taking several minutes to load. Essentially the site became unusable.
3. Uninstalled the component using the stand uninstall.
4. Site crashed completely.
5. Finally got the site back up after deleting seven separate files.
6. Sent note to support as instructed on Phil Taylor's site (still waiting for a response 24 hours later)

Clearly, YMMV. I should have listened to that voice inside my head after reading this on this company's "support" page: https://secure.phil-taylor.com/forum-closed
Owner's reply

Hi there - thanks for taking the time to leave a review. I have not had any other reports that our extension slows sites to a halt, of course there are additional sql queries to run but nothing that will majority impact on performance. Joomla Tags is used on some VERY VERY high traffic sites :-) As for support, I don't think waiting 24 hours for a first reply to an email is excessive, I am a one man business at th moment and it is the weekend :-) As for the forums, we have clearly stated the reasons we currently do not have a support forum on the page you indicate.

Now, I can't speak to the timeliness of support, because my business partner handles all the tech stuff.

However, I do know that on the times that we have needed support that support has been flawless and Phil has definitely gone the extra mile if needed.

And best of all, we get MUCH more traffic from using JoomlaTags!
I had a few problems with this product at download stage, because I was a grumpy old man and stuffed up the registration process, no fault of the Phil-Taylor the creator.

Since installing I have need support to get it running on my specific platform and the service I have received is second to none. If all joomla developers provided such good support, Microsoft would be out of business.

If you need tags buy this product, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks Phil taylor,Thanks Joomla Tag.
I got problem after installation, but received very fast support from phil taylor.Excellent experience. It's a great extension, great support. You should try it!
We saw measurable increases in SEO traffic after implementing this component. Not only that but after running into an upgrade glitch this morning I submitted a support ticket. I had a response back in under 10 mins and the entire issues was solved in under an hour. Very impressive especially on a Saturday.

This is a very easy way to increase ease of use as well as SEO on your site

It is rare I write reviews - laziness really. There are some truly great components etc around - this one included. Firstly - does it work? Yes, yes, yes - if you want a way of getting your website noticed and you run a community or information based website then yes, load it today. It is not without problems - it sort of takes over your site - but Phil is on-hand to sort out any conflicts you might have. Support through Phil cannot be faulted - certainly in my case.

Now, this component is not without issues. There is a problem with fireboard (Phil resolved this quickly and there is now a fix) and I found in my case that the payment gateways (mambots) knocked out the ajax backend (this still needs to be resolved). Other than this it works really well and the tags definitely get noticed - my site is pretty much #1 in my area of activity and a lot of my content access comes from joomla tags showing in google.

The Smarty templates allow customisation which is great (I had a problem with these white screening me in an older version but seems ok now). If you are running a site such as mine which is a rentals website then you don't want lots of tags and things spoiling your copy you can use these to fine tune the look.

Things that need solving - the ability to turn off tags on an article by article basis is the key one, then you can put tags just where you need them. I thought the new version had this but can't find it - maybe its in the 1,5 version, this particular site runs 1.15.

Overall - very good. Would be excellent except for the conflicts and the lack of what i consider a few key features. Support seems a little unwieldy at times but Phil is defo on the ball and solves stuff real quickly. Good stuff Phil.
I purchased the component, only to have some issues installing it... I contacted Phil and he immediately gave me personal support, paying careful detail to the issue.

It turns out that the installation problems had nothing to do with the extension, but my J1.5 installation. I found the problem, fixed the issue and the tags component installed flawlessly.

What really impressed me is that Phil still helped me, even though the problem was on my end.

All of that aside, this component is awesome. Extremely flexible and easy to use.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

At first i have to say that this tagging component is the best for joomla in the whole wide world (but i have also to say there are only a few tagging components for joomla out there).

But there are two points i have to mention

1) If you are using another components like IDoBlog, MyBlog, etc.. which are using there own ajax scripts you will run into big problems, because there will be conflicts between the ajax scripts of Joomla-Tags and the ajax scripts of the other component (f.e. IDoBlog, MyBlog, etc..).

2) You should have skills in CSS to integrate the Component visually into your joomla site.

If you don't run an blog component or other component which uses ajax scripts and if you have little CSS skills the i can highly recommend Joomla-Tags!
I was able to set up and configure this plugin on my J1.5 site very quickly, and the one installation issue I had was resolved by Phil as close to instantly as is possible with this kind of thing. Great work! Keep it up. I highly recommend this plugin for adding the kind of functionality to joomla that should have been there from the beginning.
After years of using Joomla and countless extensions (everything from junk to superbs), this is my first review ever here at extensions.joomla.org.

If I didn’t write this review, I would probably have a bad conscience.

The reason? Phil Taylor and his superb, friendly & patient support. I won’t even waste time on Joomla Tags component because it’s excellent anyway and does its job as described.

The reason why I’m Phil’s “customer forever” is his willingness to help and support his customers AFTER the sale has been made, which sets him apart from 98% of other developers of commercial plug-ins.

I’ve yet to see a commercial Joomla developer who would take the time, clean up the mess and fix issues inside my Joomla site that were not even caused by Joomla Tag component, but rather by my server config. and some other components.

Thanks Phil and keep up the good work!
The Tags program works very well - it's allowing me to avoid installing a separate blog component, since the tagging this way is compatible with the rest of my site. Also, conflicts between Tags and such programs as jReviews are falling by the wayside as each program comes up to speed on J! 1.5.x

Regarding the quality of support from Phil Taylor - it's excellent. It really is. The trick is, he doesn't seem to suffer fools very well; if the answer to your question can be found quickly on his KnowledgeBase / FAQ, he can't seem to help but point this out. That's not a crime, but I suspect it rubs some people the wrong way. That said, he DOES answer your questions, and promptly. He dealt with my issue in a matter of MINUTES, logging into my server for me to neb around when that's what it came down to. (For the record, *I* didn't get snipped at about the FAQs, I saw it happen to others and went and read them first hehehehehe)

Don't shy from his products out of support concerns; just, you know, read a bit first. :)
I like the component, despite all the problems caused by me. He detected the problem in less the 20 seconds faster than my microwave heating my coffee.
Thank you Phil.
When you read their forum you'll see that the speed of support is slow slow slow, which does not come in handy as this product gives a lot of problems to set up.

Read their refund policy very carefully

http://www.joomla-tags.com/kb/refund_policy/

as you most likely will be interested in, after waiting for any respond while having all sorts of problems.
Also, the statement about not giving 3rd party component integration compatibility and support, has not been stated by the developer with little reason.

I think the product when eventually implemented can be great, but the complete product, so speed of support included, is poor (I am amazed to see that other reviews tell the opposite?!)

Don't buy this product if you are in a hurry and don't like the risk of having implementation problems!
Owner's reply

The reason other customers say they get great support is because they do get great support - as have you!

We investigate every report of incompatibility and DO PROVIDE REFUNDS as per our policy if we fail to make our product work in your environment.
We spend every day supporting customers - the forums are not the primary method of communication with our customers and those that contact us often - just like you did - get a very swift reply.
Yes the install can be tricky in some environments - thats why we offer to install it for you should you ask. Every server in the world is different, and Joomla sites vary greatly
Look at the other great reviews - we do our best!
