New features in SEOSimple (new since autoMetaDescSEO):
** Ability to customize how the front page meta description is handled. You can now chose between having it auto generated based on the front page's content, or using the default Joomla site-wide meta desc.
** HTML page title configuration. Set your page titles in three different ways:
1. [CONTENT TITLE] | [SITE NAME]
2. [SITE NAME] | [CONTENT TITLE]
3. [CONTENT TITLE] (Joomla 1.5 default)
You can also customize what the separator is (in this ex. it's a pipe, can be any character).
** Additionally, you can customize the front page of your site's title tag to display a custom string. So rather than just have:
Home | [SITE NAME] -or- Front Page | [SITE NAME]
You can have one of four different layouts:
[a custom string] | [SITE NAME]
[SITE NAME] | [a custom string]
[a custom string]
[SITE NAME]

** History **
v1.0 - April 28/08 - This project was formerly called autoMetaDescSEO, but as new features were added, the name didn't really fit (did it ever? man, bad name) and so it was retitled and reversioned starting at 1.0.
v1.1 - July 6/08 - A quick release to add some additional front-page title functionality.
v1.2 - July 25/08 - Another maintenance release to add better support for auto-generated meta descriptions on Section and Category pages. Also features better UTF-8 support and description word wrapping.
v1.3 - September 4/08 - Put in some error checking for the PHP4 bug that was hitting users with the old PHP4 engine on their servers (note: we still suggest you upgrade to PHP5 - not only will it solve the previous problem with this plugin, PHP5 is now four years into replacing PHP4, it's just time to make that switch).
v1.4 - August 17/09 - A long-overdue update that fixes some bugs with the handling of special characters. Also added ability to upgrade without uninstalling (saves settings when upgrading).

Seems like a great plugin. I am wondering though if the meta data gets applied to exiting content or just to new content created after installing. This isn't clear, and I don't yet see meta data on my old content items.

Hi dmohr, the plugin "simply takes the starting chunk of text from the page’s content and applies that as the value for the meta description tag in the page’s head". It does not write anything to the articles themselves. It does this all dynamically when the page loads. Simply view the source of your page and you'll see it in the HEAD tags.

This is a super plug in, really does a nice job of detailing individual page info automatically. Don't forget to configure and enable one installed though.

I had great success with the SEO portion of the plugin; my websites do very well on seo rankings and attribute the success to this plugin. However, it has adverse effects on back-end stuff; for example it conflicts with Communicator, another critical tool.

Thanks Max. The conflicts with 3rd party extensions in the backend should be resolved in the next version (v1.5) of the plugin, which I'm hoping to have time to release in the next several weeks.

Easy as few other extensions to install, this SEO plugin just works! I mean in a positive way!!!
I don't know if really the search engin aren't looking for meta keywords, so I'm hoping the next version will have at least for the long articles some keywords generation features!!!

I've been looking for this exact type of program. It works great and is easy to install and setup. The only issue I find is that when going into the Kunena forums or CB profile page, it does not provide metadata for that. Maybe this isn't possible but if it is would be great to see in a future version.

This is the best SEO plugin I have tested. But I encounted the same problem as AmitT. I've got Joomla 1.5.8, tested in traditional and simplified chinese. It is strange that just some charactors are wrongly coded in meta description. Not all of them.
I will adopt it as soon as this problem is resolved.

this plug-in looks nice. but, I have tested it on my site and work for english only. for other languages it make the description in Gibberish.

Hi Amit, make sure your page is set to UTF-8. I've tested the plugin with Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Hungarian, Cyrillic and Hebrew and it seemed to work fine. (See - http://www.daobydesign.com/language-test.html) If you're still having problems, post in the support forum and I'll see what I can do.
