This extension will not work as expected when displaying more than one downloadable password protected file in a blogg view!
If the problems described below gets resolved this extension deserved a 4* or 5* rating.
If you have two or more password protected downloadable files with THE SAME password in blogg view, the users first downloadable file will be the correct one, however, all consecutive attempts in downloading a different file from the same blogg view will result in the download of the FIRST downloaded file, i.e. not the correct file!
Solution: Never use the same password for different files, OR, never offer password protected downloadable files with the same passwords in blogg view.
So, you CAN have multiple password protected downloadable files in blogg view as long as you keep different passwords. However, another issue arises when the user enters the wrong password. The plugin will display a "Wrong password. Please try again." message. The problem is that, if you are displaying more then one password protected file for download on the same page, ALL of these instances will display the "Wrong password" message. If you have 30 password protected files in a blogg view, the user wants to download the first file, enters the wrong password... You will now have 30 "Wrong password. Please try again." messages staring back at the user.
Solution: Never offer multiple password protected files for download in blogg view.

I was looking for an extension for download files directly from articles, without the confusing issues related with complex components. I liked a lot Attachments extension, but after having some troubles (almost surely related with my server configuration), had to look for other option.
CD Downloader saved my day. It is very configurable both in the information you include about the files and in the frontend appearance. And the best part, for me: you can manage large files without problems!
You have to pay if will be used in a commercial site, but it worth every cent.
The only issue is that it seems this extension (or related cd scriptegrator) has little xhtml transitional 1.0 validation issues.
