3 bugs related to reordering the documents in the Administration back-end have been resolved in the version 0.9.6. We're not going to release a new version for only 3 bug fixes, therefore if you have downloaded this version of RubberDoc prior to Aug. 26, please download and install it again.
You can now reorder the documents and skin the list of download links generated within the articles. There are also a whole set of new parameters which allow you to better configure your document download pages.
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! for the star ratings and the kind reviews. We have been really busy taking care of Client projects, but we do read your comments left on our blogs and consider the suggestions for the upcoming released.
Thank you!
= WHAT IS RubberDoc? =
RubberDoc is a simple Document Management extension that helps you keep your docs in a row! Using this extension, uploading and creating file download links within the articles is quite painless and easy.
= SOME FEATURES =
* Ajax Multiple File Upload
* Ability to embed document links within the articles
example1: {docs}doc-one, doc-two, doc-alias-goes-here{/docs}
example2: {docs category="category-alias-goes-here"}
result would be an html list of hyper links with file titles
* Assign documents to categories
* Generates RSS feed for every category (you can blog in files!)
* files are stored with hashed names, but when you download the files they are named after the specified titles and aliases in the back end.
= The RubberDoc.zip package contains the following files =
* com_rubberdoc_v_0.9.5.zip (use this to install the component)
* mod_rubberdoc.zip (Shows the recently added docs)
* html.zip (contains the template overwrite files if you are using a CSS only template)
* ReadMe.txt (contains some instructions and credits)
* The GPL License
You need php 5.2.0 or later to be able to use this extension. We'd really appreciate your constructive review and feedback on ways to improve the RubberDoc.

I've been looking for something like this for a long time. Provides the simple download list that i needed. the extension loaded and worked without much problem. I did notice that you cannot upload multiple documents in Firefox. I had to go to IE. As it mentions, you need php 5 as well.
Good product!

Simple to use, straight forward, lovin it.
Protects my downloads from direct linking without a confusing interface, front or back end. Using it extensively in a work site to publish docs to a distributed project team. It's the first component I'd recommend to someone needing to share docs quickly and elegantly, I know, I'm gushing...but that's the way I feel.

Thanks, I think this solution. Rubberdoc is a great tool!

Unfortunately I can't rate it but I do recognize some of these complaints (so I can make up for one.) d_joomler gave it one star because he has an incompatible zip program or because it's set wrong. Rec. 7-Zip d. The overwrite error is because you aren't keeping the directory structure and are flattening on export. Little things like that d will screw with you.
Complaint 2 from d, also jmccann, about SEO links - right -- you first figured out if you need/want a document management system OR just a directory structure. You build the hybrid after that using feeder files (abstracts, indexes, etc.). I'm not sure if Joomla sets any special considerations about that -- just a noob here myself -- but probably not, because it's so basic. DISCUSS IF WRONG?
d 3: I imaging that real folder is how RD communicates with the Joomla UI -- so you have to go to the Joomla UI to do it -- right? Does RD have your account data...?
So you gave up d for what, Exactly? A hiccup in the cache maybe? No?

Latest Beta worked for me, (didn't try with SEF). It does what it says, so 4 stars.
However, the lack of WYSIWYG integration is a show stopper. It's pretty useless if I have to document for clients the need to put in that string of text they don't understand into an article after they've uploaded a document in an entirely different place on the site.

While the simplicity behind this extension is excellent, or rather would be if it worked.
When I first downloaded the extension I had to unzip it because you don't just download the component and module, you download a zip file containing zip files. Fine, no problem. Except when you try to extract the folder you get an error saying the file it is trying to extract already exists. Delete the newly created, blank file and click try again. Repeat this process for another file, and then you have your com and mod zip files! Whew! This could be some compatibility thing between whatever software the developer used to archive the files and Windows Vista on my end, but I have never had this problem before.
Next problem: goodbye SEO links, but in all fairness I knew about this before installation.
I then tried to access the component through the backend, only to be told I needed to create a "rubberdoc" folder in the Joomla root directory with open permissions. Hmm, ok, I guess, but that's certainly a strange way to go about it.
I finally upload some documents, and set a menu link to display all documents in my created category. Well, the link works fine, and the page layout is there, but the documents uploaded do not show up on the page. I then enabled the module that shows most recent documents, and the module showed my document just fine.
At this point I gave up on the extension and will be looking elsewhere.

Good component but doesn't work with Search Engine Friendly URLs.

I absolutely LOVE Rubberdoc. It works smoothly and efficiently for me. I have a website where all of my products have several pieces of documentation that are updated fairly regularly, Rubberdoc allows me to manage them quickly and easily without having to modify document links for each product.
My one wish, define the document name as a permanent name so I could upload & replace all my updated documents at once, not indvidually.

Sounds great, but it does not work with Joomla's default SEO Urls, and still beta since august 08. No fix since then.
You can turn off SEF urls to make it work, but then you get index.php in every page.

This is a nice component. Easy to install and implement.
It would be great to have the ability to set the target for the document link, such as to open it in a new window. Other than this, no complaints.
This is a very easy and useful way to incorporate links to documents within the text of an article. The links are protected, in that the person does not get to see where the file is.

Rubberdoc is quite fine component and it saves me a lot of work.
But I would have one notice: somtimes happends that this component is not able to upload larger files (lets say 8 MB) becouse of hosting limits. Is there (better said will be there) any possibility to upload files manually and than assign them to Rubberdoc file list? (I dont want to look for another solution only becouse few files can't be uploaded, on the other hand, I need to have these files in my list of uploaded documents).
Once thanks for this extension

I had an existing school site I was converting to joomla with a substantial number of newsletters and class syllabi in PDF format. The RubberDoc provided exactly what I was looking for. Docs are easily uploaded, then file menus or lists can are generated based on categories (in my case, syllabi are categorized by class). Smartly the file displays contain good detail with sortable columns, but when you need to drop lists into page content, you get just a list of bulleted file names, which is perfect!
Yes, it needs a utility to categorize more than one doc at a time and, it would be nice to apply categories during upload. But that will likley come down the road. Very nicely done!

What it does, it does well. Very impressed with the ease of use and install. It would be nice to see a little more functionality out of it, like user uploads, display Docs as content when accessed through the list view rather than download, and more restrictions on access to files. All in all though works great and looks good.
Good Job guys

I discovered that when using rubberdocs with Internet Explorer v6, documents can be downloaded fine, but not OPENed and VIEWED ONLINE. The document seems to download and when the respective application (e.g. PDF or Excel) then opens this cannot find the document.
We tested that on quite a large number of our workstations and laptops here.
Just wondering if this is an issue that is known and worked on or do we just accept this for the moment, or are we doing something wrong in the set up?
Otherwise a GREAT extension with exactly the right mix of usability and, functionality and complexity,
Nik

Its beauty, I feel like i had achieved something using this tool.
Hat's off to the developer.
I wish I wish just a front-end upload option for registered users.
Thanks

I tried, and would be great, but the permission to download the file it seems not work good enough: if I copy the address of the file I can paste in address bar and I can download files else if I'm not logged-in.
I'd like to be sure that no-one can download the file I don't want... I think it's not difficult alot to do it, and this component will be near to be perfect.

Great Extension! Elegant and simple, easy to install and to operate.
Just missing two features (tested V0.9.6):
- Front-end upload for registered users
- Display all documents to users, even those docs which can be downloaded only by registered/special users.
Keep up that excellent work!

This is really a simple download manament component. It can work. And it can support Chinese characters in Title and Description fields.
The flaw is: please don't use title-alias for the content plugin, since this is too difficult to keep precise. I suggest to use File ID in the component.
Please include the usage of the plugin in the About page or the parameter page of the plugin.
Please add multi-language support for backend interface.

Well with docman not going to 1.5 (I think) I was searching for another easy document / file manager for downloads on my site.
This works great. It works out of the box.
