Embed PDF in content for 1.0 & 1.5 Plugin

Now Also for Joomla 1.5!

Important Note : Please Read documentation carefully before contacting support.

Did you know that you can embed PDF files in content just like you put flash and other media? Well, this mambot does exactly that - it allows you to embed PDF files in your content. You can load an external PDF file in your content very easily using this mambot/plugin.

Please follow the Instructions below before contacting us for support.

1. Install & Enable the Plugin.

2. Place the code
{pdf=http://xxx.com/files/pdf/yourfile.pdf|500|300}

where 500 & 300 are widths and heights respectively in your content where you need to embed the PDF.

3. Make sure that the pdf url that you place in the mambot code is not treated as a html link by the Joomla Editor you are using ( If it turns blue with a underline, then it is being treated as a link. )

** The Plugin wont work if this happens.

To avoid this place the code in HTML mode of the editor rather than while using the WYSIWYG mode. Or turn the editor off before using the plugin.

We added this small Instruction sheet as we got a lot of requests having the same issue.

Please note that it will only work where the pdf embedding is supported by client side browsers. For example i have to download adobe's plugin to make it work on my Firefox in Linux ( Ubuntu )

Most windows machines will have this installed when they install the adobe reader.

Do consider giving this plugin a review if you find it useful.

Great module!
But, only I think then will have a root directory parameter for documents in plugin section administration, for internals links (no http)
Sorry my english.

Just tested this plugin on Joomla 1.0.10. It works smoothly!

It seems that this is also the ONLY plugin which can embed PDF documents in Joomla content. And it is free!

A Million thanks to the author!

I recently installed Joomla and am developing a business website. I have tried a few CMS without much success. This is the first extension/plugin that I installed. It worked flawlessly. As others have pointed out, simply follow the instructions. I did find that my older version of foxit did not support firefox as an embedded plugin, but as another said that is the client side issue, I installed the latest version of foxit, and avoided once again having to install adobe's reader.
What an excellet component! This does exactly what it says it will do and really makes insertion of PDFs easy. Thank you for a great extension!
I exchanged several emails with Tekdi Web Services because I could not get this plug-in to work. It turns out that I had simply not enabled it.

I'm pleased that they took as much time as they did to try to solve the problem for a FREE plug-in.

And on top of that, it does exactly what is claimed and is trivial to set up.

Being very new to Joomla (I'm doing my first site), I thought I was misunderstanding something really basic in their documentation. I think they should explicitly talk about embedding the PDF into an Article, instead of just using the generic "content". Just for us new people.

I'd really like to be able to express sizes as percents. I'm told it is a feature request for the next version.

i am new to joomla and design tekdi was exceptional with thier support. several emails on thier part to get me up and running.
i really like the look the plugin provider---like a wrapper--except adobe pdf..
for text i belevie this to be an outstanding tool.. i was attempting to place an indesign graphic pub and could not get the file small enough for plugin to render the file quick enough.
this is not a short coming of the plugin just my file size..
great job guys and thanks for the excellent support

It works great!! And Tekdi has great customer service even for beginners, like me.

I used the upload in Media manager in JCE Editor to put my pdf files in a subfolder of images/stories, noting the url, even if I was not going to embed the pdf in an article. Then I put this url in the link box without the http://blah,blah,blah. I also selected EXTERNAL LINK, no matter whether you have the file sitting right under your nose.

I am in seventh heaven!! Caroline Poage

The creator of this plugin was 100% supportive all the way!

The plugin itself works like a gem! Those trying to keep their site professional and clean with PDF files, install this plugin!

I am a complete novice when it comes to websites and techy stuff so was daunted at the prospect at having to type in codes and what-not.
On my performance website I now have a Curriculum Vitae section which links to my CV as a pdf file. Great !
Once I figured that I could load the pdf file into the backend under "Media Manager" just as if it was an image, it then had a url which could be placed in the code, just as was explained on the Mambot download page. I just did what they said. Placed the code in HTML and 'bingo' - it works.
This will save me so much updating hassle now, when I want to update my resume with new performances. All I need do is update the original pdf file, re-upload it into the back-end and it's ready to roll. Highly recommended, even for technical ditzes like me ! :)

VM has an 'Unlink button' in the edittor, so thos not familiar with html can just hi-lite the text and click it.

I am having trouble seleting the the correct width as it views slightly differently on different browsers and PC's.

However, it is reasonably good and definately easy to use.
Owner's reply

Hi It is an idea we have to integrate a editor button to make this easier. :)

It simply uses a embed pdf tag. .Try using percentage widths ( we havent tested this but should work)

In the past I looked for a solution like this for one of my clients who uses Joomla! 1.0 but could never find one. And now that I'm migrating the clients site to Joomla 1.5 this will be an extension that I use all the time.

I installed it and tested it out and it worked the very first time right out of the box. This extension definately does what it says.

I'm very, very happy.

The Embed PDF plug-in is excellent.

I'll share my experience to help people who are as computer-limited as I am. I didn't read the instructions - when I downloaded the plug-in, it's a .zip file that says 'unzip me first' in the file name. Inside are two .zip files and you should use one of these (depending on the version of Joomla you are running). But I didn't read anything and just installed the .zip as downloaded to my localhost site. I eventually worked out my mistake (read the instructions), uninstalled and re-installed the correct zip file. However, I couldn't get it to work for whatever reason, and as a last resort contacted Parth for help. After checking I had followed the instructions, he kindly offered to look at my site, so I uploaded the plug-in to my live site AND IT WORKED! BRILLIANTLY.

So, my advice: Load your extensions and follow the advice carefully - unzip the download package first and then install one of the two .zip files inside only, depending on which version of Joomla you are running. (If you do make a mistake, in theory it should uninstall from Joomla without any issues, but in my case it certainly didn't and obviously I have a knack for breaking things.)

Second, to make sure I didn't have any code or links attached to the {PDF=...} line, I used the 'Edit HTML Source' feature in my WYSIWYG editor to ensure no HTML code was on the same line. If you have problems with the PDF not showing up on your page, look at the Source code in your webpage and check the line - I believe it should be free of other HTML and if it isn't, chances are your problem is here.

Also, I've viewed the plugin on both Apple and Windows computers with IE and Safari - it works perfectly (I read a post that said it didn't work with IE - but this is wrong in my case).

Thanks Parth - full marks. Peter.

This extension does a super job at displaying and printing PDF files on your Jooomla! site. I did run into one slight problem, I was using slashes instead of pipes for the width and height parameters, and contacted support. They got back to me quickly and helped me out in less than 24 hours, fantastic! Once I got past that stumbling block the extension worked like a charm. I am very happy with it, it is just what I needed. Thanks Parth! Julie

This is just great. I downloaded the extension and used it for some of my content pages as I have a lot of reference documents to attach with my articles. The PDF image looks really professional and it is so easy to add. All you have to do is to add a one line code in the content. You can even resize the PDF window to suit your needs. It also allows you to zoom the content, save or print the document. I would recommend this for people looking to upload word or any other documents. You can convert them to pdf first and upload.

I am really impressed.

This is a great plugin and installed in seconds! Its probably one of the easiest plugins I've installed all year.

And the developers are on the ball too - great support. I needed to include a pdf document into a new Joomla 1.5 site. Imagine my disappointment when I realised only a 1.0 version was available for download. I contacted Tekdi - the developers - and received a prompt reply -- that the Joomla 1.5 native version was expected out in late Dec. Then I received a 2nd email with the new version attached! I am probably one of the first to test it out :)

Great job, Parth Lawate. Thanks for your help.
