02-10-2008 UPDATED TO WORK WITH WINDOWS WEB SERVERS !!!
02-10-2008 UPDATED TO WORK WITH GOOGLE CHROME WEB BROWSER!!!

== Known Issues ==
When you update gears, if you get a message:

” Error: Invalid manifest - * Line 1, Column 1 Syntax error: value, object or array expected. Then the manifest file is displaying an error.

To view the manifest file please load the following url in your browser (replace domain.com with your domain!)

domain.com/plugins/system/GoogleGears/gears-manifest.php

If you dont understand the error shown on that page then email me the URL and I’ll do my best to help out. PHP5 Compatible ONLY if, when viewing the gears-manifest.php file, you get an error like:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /plugins/system/GoogleGears/gears-manifest.php on line 16

Then you are running PHP4 and cannot use our plugin. You should upgrade to PHP5 ASAP!

Thank you Phil, this is an awesome plugin.

Especially on the FCK editor - the speed up is incredible.

The plugin works great. It's way faster in the backend now. A 'must have' for every joomla user! Thanks Phil!
This pluggin worked fantastic the first day i used it, was really impressed. The following day i updated my google browser to the latest version, then every time i loaded my website the browser said it had to close. There seemed to be some conflict with gears and my website, so unfortunately i have disabled this pluggin. It may be something i have or havn't done or the google browser. It worked fine in firfox & Ie.

YOW! What a difference! I'm on Cricket Broadband, which is often slower than dialup. Administering Joomla is now a pleasure instead of being as painful as filing your teeth ;')

I cant feel any difference. Plugin enabled, files uploaded but site speed doesnt change. Maybe it cant be faster?

Sorry you feel this way, however Google Gears is a Google product, well proven and totally stable product. If you had installed and enabled this plugin there is no reason why your admin console should not be faster (Maybe you thought this would speed up your websites frontend - this is NOT the purpose of this extension, its to speed up the ADMIN CONSOLE!)

This plug-in is pure genius. My Joomla admin speed was okay before, but now it is smoking fast! Definitely saves me so much more time! I use mainly in Google Chrome. Thank You Mr. Phil Taylor!

Incredible and work's great ! A must have to all serious Joomla site. Must be included to official joomla too...

thanks !
I had been receiving the gears-manifest.php failed, status code 502 when I tried to update gears. I then tried changing the permissions for that file to 755 but I still got the error. Then I went and changed the file permissions to 777 and now it's working.

Hope that helps someone.

This extension makes Joomla into a totally different experience. It is like going from a push bike to a car, without the pollution.

This should indeed be part of Joomla, it makes it so much easier to administer a joomla site.

Just make sure PHP5 is running or gets activated. For 1and1 hosting you need to create .htaccess in the web root folder with the following lines.

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php

This should become part of JOOMLA!!! I can't believe how awesome this is!! Does what is says and will now become part of the dozen + sites I manage!!

Just for those new to gears. When you click "update gears" Its not downloading to your website its downloading the files to your computer (which is why its faster). It should be very east as with any extension to uninstall later if you want to. Really does speed things up.

Gears'ing all of the static content in Joomla! admin makes it feel nice and slick, like an ajaxed app. Very nice, especially for the WYSIWYG editors which have lots of little images that they have to load.

This should also be released as a non-admin app, which fewer directories to update in the manifest and an accompanying module so it can be placed wherever we want.

This really does work, thanks a lot for the great mod.

Perfect for big joomla websites.

VERY good plugin! I have a rather large site so loading up the admin has been taking more and more time as I continue to add to the site and this plugin loads up the admin in 1/4 the time I had become accustomed to waiting! VERY GOOD JOB WELL DONE!

Wow, I have installed the google gears plugin on my joomla sites and the site administration became fun.
The difference in speed is unbelievable.

Phil, Many thanks for creating this wonderful plugin.

Very good, very useful. However I noticed that with the plugin active, if the module manager filter is set for one module position, after saving settings for a module the filter is cleared and does not remain in place, as is normally the case in Joomla.

Thanks for taking the time to provide a review.
I tested your comment about the Joomla Module Filter having issues and I cannot replicate the issue using the latest Joomla 1.5.9, this is also the first report of this issue I have had :-)

I normally would have been very skeptical of a plugin like this. But, seeing all the very positive feedback, I decided I had to try it. Well, thank god I did! I just wish I had done it BEFORE I jerked around with my Admin panel for 4 or 5 hours tonight...this would have turned it into 2 hours. Oh well,at least I have it now!
I installed this Plugin a while ago because I loved the concept of it. I never got it to work and kept getting an error with status code 500.

I looked into the problem more today and after I changed the permissions to the gears-manifest.php to 755 it worked. I am not sure why it was not set to 755 by default but a bit more documentation/troubleshooting would have been nice.

After first trying it out, it was much faster with the Joomla core. I use VirtueMart though and have thousands of products. The bulk of my time in Joomla is working with VirtueMart. This Plugin did not seem to make VirtueMart any faster. I would give this Plugin the highest rating possible if it could speed up VirtueMart.
Owner's reply

I'm sorry you had issues with this - however the setting of file permissions is the responsibility of your server/Joomla and not the responsibility of a Joomla Plugin :-)

I only regret there is no six-stars rating! This extension is simply amazing. Setting it up is almost trivial and the speed benefits are very real.

Too bad it doesn't work on PHP4, but I find this fair: PHP4 is dead, it's just one of my hosts who doesn't seem to get it.

Overall, great job! Thank you very much for this must-have extension.

I was a little sceptical about the speed up claims but there true, a staggering difference in access speed. Thanks Phil.
