The 'Show on frontpage' option Joomla offers, is quite limited. This is because it has effect on all the frontpages you use in your site. That results in usually only using frontpage for the home page and section / category blogs for other overview pages. Only with the blogs have other limits.
With FrontpagePlus you can have a frontpage for specific sections and categories
This means you can show only the frontpage items for a specific section/category. This opens up a lot of possibilities to use the frontpage option for not only your home page.
Once installed you have an extra menu item type. If you make a new menu item, you can find the FrontpagePlus type under Internal link >> Articles.
FrontpagePlus uses the core frontpage files to generate the output. If you use a template that has it's own frontpage output, FrontpagePlus wil NOT use that. It might do in the future, but not at the moment.

Frontpage Plus gives you more functionality for your Joomla System. I think this is a small but effective extension in the same qulity like the other NoNumber extensions.

I installed this and it allowed me to convert a 16 multisite and multi template installation into 1 website (without the client even noticing) in less than 2 hours!
Also it sped my whole site up - a lot. 1 database, 1 prefix (was 1 database 16 prefixes), the speed bump was most welcome.
The only small problem I hit (A 3rd party template override issue) was fixed by the developer within 30mins by posting on the NoNumber forum, he even wrote the CSS for me!
What else can I say but WOW, five stars no problem. I will be using this whenever I can from now on. Thanks, Peter! And I've mastered it after 1 bit of advice.
Be sure to check the other extensions too, really useful stuff. Essential.

I would have rated this higher but I can't get it to work. I click on the Help link and you take me to the same page where there is three paragraphs describing the product.
If you are going to advertise help on the product, then produce some help. I see the concept, but I get a blank page after setting it all up.

Please turn to my forum for help and issues. I can probably help you troubleshoot and find a solution to whatever the problem is.
I hope you try out the support on extensions of others before posting bad reviews. Most of the open source developers are very willing to help on any issues!

Scouring the extensions pages for exactly this and finding just weak work arounds until I came across FrontPage Plus. This is the answer to my Joomla dreams and now able to create exactly the site I was hoping for that core joomla just couldn't provide.
Downloaded and intalled in less than 2 minutes with no hassles at all. I love it, it's perfect and the developers deserve a congratulatory slap on the back or even better they deserve to get this into the core Joomla as standard.

I use this instead of the Joomla! FrontPage article Blog. This is why:
I use a single Joomla! installation to serve 1 central community having 8 departments.
Each department has it's own sections.
With FrontpagePlus, the 8 departments are now alowed to check the 'Front Page' option in an article.
The home page of each department is a 'FrontpagePlus' page pointing at all sections owned by the department.
