I finally found the "How To" instructions on which 6 parts to download and install. However, I was only able to find four on that site.
I started reading through the release notes and yet... still couldn't find these two files. One file is adapterAccess1.5.3.zip. This file is mentioned in the release notes yet it is not attached to the release note nor is it in the Files section. I find this very, very frustrating.
The second file I was unable to find was menuAdapter1.5.1.zip. There was no release note chronicling this file nor was it in the Files section.
The file naming convention of this product is atrocious! You need to be a sleuth to figure out the files you need and where to find them. The "How To" install was found through some digging and it has not been updated to reflect the files of reference nor some new beta files thrown into the Files section.
My site is running really good right now without this module. However, I need it. I think I will look into other modules paid or not that will give better support and care more about their product (free or not).
Really...how much effort does it take put all the needed (up to date) files in one simple zip file? Additionally, in their forums they have people willingly...for free wanting to help them improve their product. There are posts such as... "I can do a tutorial video" and "I can rewrite the tutorial..." yet no reply to their offerings.
My recommendation are to install if you need it, install if you have a boat load of patience, install if you have a boat load of time, install if you like solving mysteries and install if you like a challenge.

The component is easy to install and configure and much much easier than other Access Control components. I've tried others and this was the right one for me and my clients. It provides and integrates new user groups into Joomla and takes over the user control from Joomla and redirect it to noixACL so no conflicts could ever emerge. It also provides the ability to create new access levels (public, registered and special) which I haven't seen in other components.
The overall rating is Perfect for any size of sites.
The only problem I've faced is malfunctioning of the adapters from time to time when administrating the site form the Frontend. It says: "You don't have permission to access". It is necessary to have it on my site as it depends on authors for the main content and they can't add or edit articles. I've tried disabling the adapters and guess what? everything is working fine and all the access rights are working as they should.
Another point, I've tried 100s of times to create a new group and give it frontend add and edit rights but it never save it. Even if they are a sub-group of the standard super administrators of Joomla.
The response speed and quality of the support is yet to be measured.

Although it takes some time to understand how this system works and to set up it accordingly, with this component you can fine tune the access to everything.
In case of several editors of different topics, it is just a must.
And the best of all: it works without any problem.

First of all, obrigado! Thanks for this great free extension, i'll donate! I've been searching something like this for some time. It works great when you understand how it works.
It is a great extension for web projects that need more than Joomla basic user groups. At least for working with different menus and items like in my project.
If I think something has to be improved is the Documentation, examples are too long when in fact it's very intuitive. Maybe it could be better to simplify the installation and if possible, allow to modify without dissable the addapters.

To put it simply, Useless & Awful. We must have tryed about 50 times to get this to work properly but to no avail - we couldn't. Interface is very poor and the functionality of it doesn't seem to be even the slighest exept for creating new 'groups'. It installed fine but when we tryed repeatedly, we could NOT get any of the permissions to change. We created a new group, set the permissions in the awful interface (which im sure we did correctly) and items still showed which, from what this extension said, should not have. We put the newly created group as a child of the parent 'Registered' and set an item to special while setting the permissions to 'none' in the noixACL interface. It still showed.
Overall as said, the only good, but not of any use as of yet, outcome that we got was we were able to create a new group. Nothing else worked. We will not try this again.

1) Although documentation is difficult to find, one of the project members has a NoixACL demosite with projects and how to's to get you start, great for a beginner...
2)Downloading files is tricky but the noixacl forum has all the links you need to download straight from the project site, so no need to visit. just look out for the repeat message on the forum http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=341017&p=1856520#p1856520
3)Great secuirty but annoying that super admin is not givien full right by default, but with a disable and enable of the adapters all works great!!!
4)No hierarchical rights seems a bit odd, but according to Joomila (the developer) its more for lgoical organiastion as hierarchical is difficult to code!
Great component with a building support and documentation!!!

1) Seriously lacking in documentation.
2) The download area contains several versions lumped together with mismatched naming conventions - making it very difficult to obtain the compoments/plugins/adapters you need or to choose the latest version. How about clearly documented all-in-one packages?
3) Default deny may be great for security. It also means I spend half my time trying to track down where and why a SUPER-ADMINISTRATOR account doesn't have permission to access xyz...
4) I'm still trying to figure out why my super-admin account doesn't have access to reset the hit count on an article created by the same account??!??
5) It seems hierarchical rights might have stopped working with the last version? I need to test that. But so far, I've had to grant rights to all the groups that need access because inheritance doesn't seem to work.
All that, and it's still the best ACL component I've tested!

This component is the best ACL system out there. And its free. Its a bit of a hassle to get it running if you are not familiar with ACL systems. Just download the component, install the adapters inside the component, and create a new group and you will be fine.
I slightly outdated how-to is linked from the projects homepage bu you get the idea.

I am using noixacl2.0.6 and documented my experience which I have turned into a tutorial, projects and demo site.
My experience is based upon using Joomla 1.5.14.
A number of users had experienced difficulties with NOIX ACL 2.0.6 because of their Joomla installation.
Double check your Joomla installation against the Joomla requirements.

Kudos to the developers of noixACL. This extension is maybe not yet perfectly documented and a little complex to install and use in the beginning. For the moment being quite some PHP knowledge is required, especially when something goes wrong.
But once one gets to grips with the extension, it is just great. Very flexible and highly configurable. The code is clean and well structured. This makes noixACL easy to extend.
This extension is still very "young". I am sure that the rough edges will be rounded off soon.
Thanks for this great free (!) extension.

Okay, at first, I was going crazy trying to understand how to use this extension. I looked everywhere and to no avail. I almost dropped it and moved on to finding another program, but I gave it another shot. I finally found a site that helps explain how to install, and which files you need to install (they really should put all of these files into one zip file).
My review after finally figuring it out (thanks to this very simple guide): This extension is awesome once you understand the little steps you have to work through. It's exactly what I needed, and most importantly, it's free. I don't know what the big deal is with other extensions that charge a lot of money for just a little extension. GREAT WORK WITH THIS EXTENSION! KEEP ON MAKING IT BETTER AND SIMPLER FOR ALL OF US!

It does almost anything I wanted on an ACL component, it controls access to menus, to content items, modules and other things. It installs flawlessy in Joomla 1.5.12 spanish.
It misses (as I know) control on creation/update/modify/delete sections and categories, and the spanish language pack, this one is not a problem, because I can translate it and share it. Good work!

Having tried other ACL solutions I found this extension today and installed it. At first, I was lost, however after going to the forum I was up and running in no time. Now I have a happy client that has the features that he specified.
Part of the adventure of using open source software is the search for answers. I guess it is the thrill of the chase for me. However, some users are not so tolerant and may find the lack of documentation a deal killer on this extension.
If you download this extension and have a hard time. Just be patient and you will find the answers you need. The work will be worth the results!

I install the ext but could not get it to work on the frontend. Also this ext takes over your Joomla ACL, so if you customized your ACL I would suggest not going live unless your comfortable with the settings and ext.
I have to say there are a few things about this addon I simply can't get over:
1. The Default DENY permission. While I see a lot of users complaining about it, from a systems administrators, a+, and network+ certified professional this is always what I want to see. Though it takes some time to initially set up you people need to realize that if your looking for security you want it to be this way as this is what makes a plus in my book.
2. The price, for what you get: an amazing script, a developer open to new ideas, and the community as a support team, this is how programing should be.
3. Secondary groups, while I know that this doesn't sound like a lot it helps administration a LOT
with that being said, one of the main things i did wish to see in it would be support for component views either naturally in joonmla or having a command that developers could use to say that they wanted access restriction
Overall a very good program

If the developer provided even a small amount of documentation this component would get 5 stars from me.
At first I downloaded the component and two plugins (system and user) but kept getting locked out of articles and menus, even as Super Administrator.
I reinstalled, uninstalled, tried older versions ... banged my head against the wall. But the problem was that I hadn't really come to terms with it conceptually.
Once you realise that you need to enable permissions for all the categories you need to use (even as super administrator) you're away. Set up some dummy accounts, and start applying specific group permissions to categories of content. If, like me, you install this component and think "What the hell??", persist. It really does work!
Best of all it's not encrypted and doesn't come with a reassuringly expensive price tag.
Thanks very much NoixACL developers for working within the spirit of the Free Software, not just the letter.
