Originally I activated the Recaptcha plugin that comes with Joomla 2.5, but I was not happy with the display: I could NOT read ANY of the captchas!! I must have clicked it 50 times or more. So I knew that I couldn't do that to my users (or potential users.)

I installed this Security Images plugin instead. I'm using the little animated movie captcha, which is easy to read and only requests 3 letters.

I didn't have any problems with installation: it showed up on the Registration Form immediately.

I don't understand why Joomla's default Recaptcha looks so incredibly BAD. Almost completely unreadable! I'm very glad there are other options like this Security Image plugin.

I was getting hammered with registrations by bots and need something BAD!

I downloaded and installed this and got the API for nucaptcha and within 5 minutes from downloading and installing I was setup and ready go to.

I have not had a single bot registration since I Installed this.

I expected a plugin with the name "Security Images" to actually show....well, Security Images.

It doesn't.

Installed easily enough. Configuration is pretty simple, not much one should be able to screw up. But after trying with all three captcha types on all five components, I can't get a security image to show up on ANY of them.

There is no documentation for Joomla 1.6/1.7, nor is there a support forum for it. The contact form to contact the author is broken.

You'd think something that was very recently updated for 1.6/1.7 would be better supported.

Simply download this and install it through the extension manager, goes smoothly on Joomla1.6 . Then just go to the plugin manager, adjust settings, I recommend using 'ReCaptcha' (but you have to request an API key) and then you hit save and your done. You can also set on which forms you want it to appear! (register etc.)

This is a good, reliable captcha component, with easy configuration of the display and forms the captcha should be applied to. I have used it on three sites now, two with VirtueMart installed, and on all three the spam registrations have totally stopped, while real customers seem to have no problems registering.

I have installed on three sites of my own and several others. It works on all the Templates that I've tried it on. (I don't use those free Templates with spurious code).

Installation is easy enough, and like all configurable components more than install and go. But the ability to configure is what makes it flexible.

I'm sure the developer has put a huge amount of time into creating this extension, but it was a huge waste of my time to try to install it. Might be able to get it to work if you use a stock Joomla template, but of the two iTemplater templates I tried neither would display the captcha. Yes, I followed the install directions to the letter, including the awful pain of manually uploading the numerous patch files via ftp. Read the forum on his site, the FAQ, etc, tried reinstalling twice, and no luck. After I got to his instructions on how to download a program and use php coding to develop your own new patch files ("It's like a game!" he says), I figured I'll leave this extension to someone who has a lot more free time than I do. Even if I had been able to get this to work, the though of having to manually update all the different patch files after upgrading Joomla (every time!) made me want to forget the whole thing. Think twice before you jump into this mess.

This has been the only solution I can find for all the spam registrations on my old Joomla 1.0 site. Thank you!!

I installed this one and reinstalled and reinstalled ..

I kept getting the "500 - View not found" error when trying to save the settings. This error is mentioned in the documentation but it simply says the component was not correctly installed. However, I get no errors when installing and reinstalling does nothing. All directory perms are set properly etc.

Support is non-existent. There's a guy on the forums who posted in August and the solution is simple - he needs to upload the patched files. No one could even take the time to reply to him in 3 months however.

Move along and find another com. This one is dead.

I'm a professional Joomla developer building many sites for clients with Joomla every year and this is the first review I've written. It's a testament to the quality of this component that I've bothered to register jsut so I can write thsi review.

This is a fantastic component. Like all the CAPTCHA based components it requires some modifications to the Joomla core files. This is a necessary evil I'm afraid and those who complain that it's too complex dont understand this.

In addition to be an excellent component on it's own, the developer has provided information to other developers on how to integrate it with other components. This means that VirtueMart 1.1.3 comes with support for Security Images 5 already baked in.

Well done! Great component.

I downloaded the files and the patch and followed the instructions. Within 10 minutes uploading and patching, (including a little learning) I had the component working perfectly! This is not a simple little plugin but a component that has had a lot of work put into it. I really do like the maths catchpa! Cool. No more daily spam registrations. And it was free! Well done to the developers.

First of all, thanks for an awesome plugin.
Second, please don't try to "wing" it. There are very specific steps you must take and they are all well documented in the Documentation, including pretty pictures for all of us.
NICE JOB!

I have to admit the component itself seems reasonable. Unfortunately, its support is restricted to moderated posts that don't necessarily get approved. I had posted an issue on the support forum and was informed that the post would be moderated. However a week on, and I'm still yet to see my query show up in the forum itself. Upon investigation within the forum, my query apparently "does not exist".

Disappointing ...

This is an excellent extension that does exactly what it says it does. There is extensive online documentation to help you download the 2 required zip files and to set it up once installed. Just make sure you download the correct files compatible with the version of Joomla you are running.

The first zip file is installed using the Joomla Install method in the Admin back end. Too Easy. It will even tell you when installation has been completed and if it was successful.

The next part is a bit fiddly as you need to unzip the patch file in a folder and then FTP its contents to your website where some 14 Joomla files are replaced by these patched files to enable the Captcha engine to intercept the php script.

Once this is done you simply go to the Joomla Global Configuration manager and SWITCH ON the component. I must admit I did have an issue here as after successful install the option to switch on the component was NOT showing up. After a few hours researching I simply unzipped the patch file again and used FTP to upload the files again. This time it worked!!

The Security Images component has a very powerful and useful back end configuration menu which not only allows you to make configuration changes but also has very useful troubleshooting options. Also there is a range of different Captcha core or plug-in supplied that give you lots of different options to display graphical letters.

On the front end it works very well and integrates well with the register, login and contact pages.

I believe when Joomla V1.6 is released the installation will be even easier as the patch files will no longer be necessary.

Overall 10 out of 10 for this fine product.

I experienced no difficulties with security images whatsover. It does all that it is meant to do.

I think it would be a improvement if the image could be placed over the input box, instead of alongside. I achieved that with a hack anyway.

Thank you very much for an making this package available.

Ill support an Average rating.

I downloaded and tried for about an hour after reading the directions forward and backwards to get this up and running with no luck. I downloaded the two packages that seem to be required. The com itself and the core hacks package. Then I went through the step by step of turning the captcha on. No luck. (rinse, repeat, no luck)

As for my background I have probably downloaded and installed hundreds of different mods and coms over the years including items like CB and Jomsocial. I can't think of any others that I was unable to get working after it was installed...

This com does seem like it would be a huge asset for any web site so I will make another attempt (and review) when a new release comes out.

Also I would like to suggest keeping the files required to install the system close to each other. Not one on this page and one on the other side of the web site.

It is a high recommend plugin, but the installation with severally upload the 14 files is not a nice solution to install a plugin.

Please change it in the future!
Thanks

I installed this plug-in with intent to use it to secure the site and it didn't work as I expected so I removed it.

For whatever reason I looked in my /media folder a few days ago and noticed 2 folders in there (which should not have been there, I created that folder for other stuff, I don't know why these folders went in there?!?!?)

com_securityimages
system

Since they should not have been there and I'm not using securityimages on the site I moved these folders (I did not delete them just in case).

After I removed these two folders I was not able to use ANY of the administrator menus and it broke or changed several aspects of the site. I put these two folders back and everything is working again thankfully.

Either this is a nasty bug or it's potentially a very big problem in general. If a plug-in is removed should it not remove itself and not leave stuff behind like that? Especially things that can completely break a site.

I attempted to go to the support page to look if others also had this problem or if I could get a fix but the support site doesn't look like it's online right now.

Could be a good extension, but beware of these problems.

Hi

if you look at the installer xml (securityimages.xml) you will see that none of these directories is created in /media. (and certainly not system)
The installer create /media/logo and /media/background so the only explanation is that YOU move something there. It cant be the code that create such a mess. I would look for directory alias (linux host). All in all, definitively not an error of my component.
