One thing that sets Joomla! apart from other CMS systems, (like Drupal), is its ease of use and the ability to get working with it quickly.

Unfortunately, this plugin goes against all of that. You basically need to program it yourself, so this is NOT for the common user. However, even a developer would need some documentation to find out how to customize and code it according to how the originator of the extension intended, and there is no solid documentation to be found.

Access control in Joomla 1.5 is very limited, but with noixACL, you can easily control access to articles, categories, sections, modules and menus. I purchased JUGA, but had a difficult time figuring it out and my membership for support ran out. When you combine noixACL with the tutorial infomation found on the site you have a FREE solution to your access control needs. THANK YOU for this extension.

Just installed the extension and works perfectly with Kunena 1.6.4 (Joomla 1.5.22) ... no need to create any adapter or anything else...
You have to create custom user groups with Registered group as parent

Thanks a lot for your effort in developing this extension

I do not like to give negative feedback, must must warn you this is not a stable release. As the two previous reviews have stated, thought this was exactly what I was looking for. But after an afternoon of trying to get it to work, I've uninstalled it.

It just does not function, you have to search for the adapters and then it restricts backend access.

Now even though I have uninstalled all the plugins, components etc, two plugins still appear in the plugin list. And even worse the additional groups I had created still exist.

Best to avoid until a stable release is available.

I'd have to say that I give promise to making things that work, easy to set up and are straight forward even for a beginner to use, the idea of a registered user management system is pretty straight forward, usually.

1.0 Installation is backwards
1.1 Install list's plug-ins that do not exist
2. Plug-ins fail to un-install (had to do a backup-restore) to fix this
3. It just needs to be made clear the order and files needed to use to get it to work.

If your a beginner, don't use this!

Hello,
a friend of mine asked me to help them with their site and the need of groups and permmissions. He told me he tried to use noixacl, but the result was he messed everything up and had to re-upload all the admin files (whole joomla...).

Well, I first searched the JED since it was a lot of time I didn't had the need for acl. I saw that noixacl had many good comments and few ones about the rough organizations of downloads and lack of documentation.

So I cleaned everything from previous install and decided to give it a try.

Result: I'll search for something else.

I consider myself quite expert. Few years ago I wrote a mini tutorial for JACL for italian community ant it won the contest for the best tutorial for joomla (in Italy).

I know ARO/ACO/AXO and in about 1 hour I understood I had to manually search for core adapters (!!!), install 'em and even give some permissions to super admin otherwise I couldn't access anymore a lot of things....

Now I understand my friend saying that after installing he lost his permissions as superadmin...

Ok, that's could be, but unfortunately I have access to things I should have not with a test account (registered) and I've no access to things I should with another account (new group).

So, maybe the component is not buggy, but for sure (1 millions of times sure) is not ready for production level, is not ready to be used by simple users.

And most important, it should be clearly stated that it could requires some hours just to create a new group and give it the permission to access some articles (the operations themselves require few minutes if you know what to do (but unfortunately it's quite hard to find the right documentation), but you need some hours to understand why it doesn't work).

If I read such a review, I would have avoided to waste 1 hour.

Excellent, simple ACL editor that solved the problem of adding extra user levels in Joomla 1.5. In my case this solution worked perfectly for hiding Community Builder tabs from different levels of user.

It would be great to have some documentation, but this is a non-commercial product and there is a tab asking for donations within the app for that very reason. All in, it took me an hour to get the extension installed, set up and working in my project. It did what a commercial alternative couldn't. Great stuff.

Great component: flexible (create groups, hide/show menus, block modules, ...) and good documentation

The documentation is not clear, there are too many old files in the archive, but once you get the idea - this is a strong ACL mechanism! And it is free!!!
To hide menu items from specific user groups, you have to use the dedicated mod_mainmenu_noix module which is an extension of the core joomla's mainmenu. But the problem is that the developer used hard database table naming, using the jos_ prefix. So if you change it (which you should), you loose the functionality. To fix it, if you don't use jos_, go to the helper.php file and replace each 'jos_' in the code with '#__'.
Don't forget to disable the 'menu' and 'content' adapters after finishing the setup.
From here - is perfect (though not very friendly).

I couldn't agree more with the previous post. The download area is an ABSOLUTE MESS and the documentation is less than impressive. That said, I am VERY APPRECIATIVE of the fact that there is no fee for this extension (Kudos to the developer), so it this review is both really good and really bad. Once you do figure out which files to install and what documentation to read to configure properly, it seems to be a fairly good extension that offers a lot of possibilities for protecting or hiding content.

The component seems to be very cool and promising, but it lacks in file organization when downloading. For Newbies there are duplicate files, versions and so on at download area. The files and Adapters should be in a single package or better organized.
Regarding the component, the latest version I tried 2.0.6 is buggy. When managing a group the access is not respecting the settings for the extensions checked to block. It is also disappears the user created and so on. Lack of text info what the checkbox selection will do, like "By selecting you're allowing access or blocking", etc
Anyway, the component structure, idea how to control is great. Congratulations and keep improving it. It's a pity now I have to search another one for me.

Great developer and nice solution before Joomlas J 1.6 standard ACL is there.

But you have to check the NoixACL documentation first!

If I was developer I would have put this top priority bcs many questions in forums etc would then have been solved for users by already reading this documentation!

Thanks Julio but put up this link everywere so people can read before testing this great solution!

Hi,
at the end I give up to implement this function. Maybe the author is a genius but then he's a chaotic genius. This functionality is so complex that it's a must to get a good documentation. I'm sorry to say this. I really tried to understand and implement this tool it would have saved me some money.
Thanks

It is soooo hard to work with this component... yeah i understand that it deals with lots of functionality, but still, to ease things a bit, the developers must create a documentation for such a component.

I have numerous complaints, top three are

1. I figured it out (a doc would hav helped)... When new users register, i get a blank notification message with something like NEW_USER_REGISTERED... something like this. I later fixed a language file, and that too after thorough search in the forums.

2. It's not compatible with Alpharegistration, i am getting an error for a deleted member like "Email Already in use". The member was deleted ages ago... and auto-purging of user database in AlphaRegistration is set to 10 days.

3. Backend editing, like writing articles, was totally blocked. Later i realised that it was the content adapter creating such problem. I disabled it and everything ran fine. The default settings for everything in content adapter must be "Enabled" for super-admin.

There are many other minor issues as well..

A message to developers, I am really very thankful and appreciate your hardwork for this component, but it is always advised that for advanced components, there must be a DOCUMENTATION. Else it does nothing but ruins the site instead of helping.

Had there been proper documentation, I might have solved all of them myself! Still the alpharegistration thing is left unsolved.

it does the job perfectly ! I implemented this together with Community Builder and JLSGroupSelector to create usergroups and show them different menus after login. I'm happy that I spent a few hours to get this running instead of spending hundreds of dollars for a commercial solution :) I can recommend it to everybody willing to experiment a little...The documentation could be better though, that's why I only give 4 stars.

This is another example of a free extension working as good (and better...) as the commercial ones.
It is a little tricky to understand the help system, but once logged in onto the developer's site (http://www.blueflyingfish.com/noixacl/) everything goes. Easy to install, easy to configure and powerful features.
It grants the possibility to set access control over back end, also for single components, and this is a great feature for professional Joomla! powered websites.

I needed something to create new groups and manage them. Afteer having tried a bunch of them I came across this one.
I'll definitely say that it is an awesome component: installed it in a click, and in 2 more clicks managed new groups and users.
Fast, simple and reliable !
